  • the whole point is to just close your eyes and listen to real country male voice perfectly complimented by an angel on harmonies.

  • I've just now discovered John Prine and he's great. Of course, Emmylou has always bee great. And Prine can act, too.

  • Just seems sad that Emmylou needs cheat sheets. I know she's got a tonne of songs in her head....but really???? you can't remember this one????? Love her still though....just so there's no questioning that

  • @Zootrocks i agree emmylou is great but a cheat sheet.....really???

  • @jjordanify JP doesn't seem to mind. :)

  • @Zootrocks That's your comment on Emmy Lou?, Really?

  • I first heard this song when I lived near Red Rocks 1971.I used to go there on weekdays and sit around on the rocks, thinking of a woman I'd left far down south. This song/ place and Emmylous" from Boulder to Birmingham" and that woman I left down south (now my wife) have a big place in my heart..Thank you.

  • Two of my favorite artist - thank you for this! I met John at a concert in VaBeach many years ago - talked, and even got a hug - one of the best moments of my life!

  • One must wonder who the 4 individuals are who dislike this. No ear for greatness, I guess.

  • Awesome! Emmylou is a harmonizing angel

  • One of the rarest Jewels known to man.

  • Thanks for posting; we are so fortunate to have all this great music and so many different live performances; just enjoy them all. Why anyone would put down someone is beyond me.

  • she's always brilliant and it's so awesome to see JP up and at 'em. for those inquiring about the lyrics sheet, I believe this was being recorded for later release and Emmy wanted to be sure she got it right so they didn't need a second take. She is a master class in master class.

  • Just Beautiful!!!!

  • Just imagine if they had polished this by rehearsing. The Bonnie/JP version will never be equalled, let alone bested, but EmmyLou doesn't need to prove herself to anybody. That lady can BRING IT, in any genre.

  • Love EmmyLou but I agree that Bonnie Raitt's version w/JP was better. Altho anything at Red Rock has to be AWESOME!

  • keep your wooh hoos to yourself and stfu. i didnt come to hear you.

  • I was sitting second row center for this - thanks for posting!

This performance is on JP's new live CD

  • Great emotion....long life to JP...emy....and to all the people that love country style....

    .from Como Lake , Italy

  • sure hope John plays this at bonnaroo! maybe with a little help from say Tori? :)

  • @JLHewey Are US cities are becoming shitholes..which banana republic are you in?

  • Here or in some other Prine videos, readers try to compare Dylan and JP.

Dylan is a great poet, no doubt, and has written great songs of all types.

And JP has written great songs as well, perhaps not as diverse as Dylan.

The difference to me, is that Dylan writes and sings them.

John seems to have lived them.

They aren't just songs - they are real.

  • @Bamaboompa john prine didnt write this song a man named steve goodman wrote it

  • @mike14td You are wrong, my friend. John Prine 'did' write the song and released it in 1971. Bonnie Raitt duetted with John at a 1989 tribute concert to Steve Goodman. They sang this song. Check out wikipedia. It gives you all the details.

  • @mike14td Every video of this song has a post by you stating that JP didn't write this song. Did you go to all the videos of this song and post that? Looks as if you did. Btw, you are VERY wrong. John Prine DID write this song. Look it up brother. ;)

  • I heard JOhn and Bonnie Raitt do this live, very glad to hear the harmony on the chorus...

  • Thank you to whomever taped and posted this. Its a wonderful example of the amazing talent of these performers to do an amazing job even when its seems they are creating something in the moment. Such generous and terrific artists are a heavenly blessing.

  • Looks like the guitarist Jason Vilber can only afford one grey suit. Please John P. Buy him an alternative outfit :-)

  • I can hear myself going wo ohhh, I remember this person recording this!! LOL

  • Was at this concert on June 6h, one of the BEST concerts ever. I grew up listening to John Prine, and now my 4 year old loves his songs. When the show was going on, You didn't notice the Emmylou was glancing at the words. Ya'll can back off of her!!!

  • gotta luv it

  • Thanks for the post, great stuff!!

  • hard to believe it's been over 35 years since I started listening to Emmylou.

    even longer for JP

I'd love to hear them go into the studio now and cut a duet album.

    Killer!

  • @Bamaboompa Are you 90??

  • @ezl2010able - ez, some days, I'm tellin ya!

  • oh geez lisa, i got a soft spot in my head for emmylou and you already know i love john, thanks for the vids... you are welcome to check out my playlists ya know

  • WOW! wait a minute. WOW!

  • She may have had this sprung on her but she still manages fantastic impromptu harmonies. That is the sign of a true professional - and what a superb sound !

  • That is kind of surpising to see her reading from a sheet of paper?

  • well sometimes things are done like on an impromptu happening,, emmy is a true great in her own right,, listen to her on utube singing hickory winds,,

  • You sir, are an idiot.

  • @JLHewey

Actually John Denver did it pretty well too.

  • You are a true Dip-Shit. She might've glanced at the lyrics; but MAN! Did you hear her sing? I have loved both of these artists for many years. And I'm pretty sure I wouldn't like you worth a damn.

  • @mattmorgan16 Emmylou is a legend!!!!

  • @mattmorgan16 - Thank the Angels that she did not have too much pride, but enough respect to do whatever it takes to get it right. After all like it was said below, music is for LISTENING!

  • This was an awesome show. I was there with my two sons. They grew up listening to these two amazing artist, and apprciate them as much as their parents. It is cool enjoying the same music as your adult children.

  • i love both of them - grew up with them on my parents record player....have both of their stuff of my own throughout the years...she isnt looking at the music - shes reading the lyrics......doesnt one bit diminish the great song....i actually love the way john plays to her and waits on her to "lead" a couple times....they are both musical icons in my opinion.

  • What a great show - she can read from a lyrics sheet if it sounds like that

PS - Emmylou is not tacky

  • she sounds good as back up but by herself .. i don't like

  • i have a poem that she wrote to me shes awesome!

  • westfallsrus,

Emmylou Harris is NEVER tacky!! If you don't watch her reading and LISTEN, you will hear excellence!

  • THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS!

  • this was a great show -prine does nothin' but get better

  • Fascinating.Every comment posted thus far is another reason why this performance is the stuff of legends. Captured live & locked in time:Two Legends, booked on the same stage on the same night;Years have gone by since we fell in love with Bonnie's Angel - more Legends; For many, including Emmylou, this Song is sacrosanct;Emmylou will not risk getting a single word wrong;John coaxes Emmylou into and through Angel. Together, they create a perfect moment. It couldn't happen until it did.

  • An incredible song and incredible performance but I agree with Charmaul...it's kinda tacky EmmyLou is using typed lyrics. It's a classic, I'm surprised she doesn't know them by heart.

  • Maybe she isnt looking at the words, maybe its the music?? Just a thought

  • Awesome!

  • Great

    Thanks for sharing

    thanks Marion

  • Sorry Emmylou, but Bonnie Raitt will always own this song with JP. Good to see Prine has his mojo all the way back. I didn't see this concert at Red Rocks but I once skied down the bleachers on 12 inches of powder with a buddy on the way back from a no powder trip to Vail.

  • You're cool. STFU. We, the fans own this song.

  • @JLHewey This exact performance is the same recording that is on John's newest album In Person & On Stage. Thats pretty cool if you ask me

  • absolutely love it.

  • Emmy should have learned the words to the song.

  • This was a fabulous concert! This takes me right back to the moment they sang this number! Beautiful! Can't wait to see either of them again.

  • You big lucky!

After a 6-year hiatus in Toronto (oh...the Up The Mountain concert in the Molson Amphitheatre on the shores of Lake Ontario), I was lulled into thinking that I wouldn't have to drive 10 hours (again, from KCMO) to see Emmylou Harris!

She was booked to play Sunday evening last at the local music festival, but then became horribly sick (get well soon, Emmylou!). Next time, I will drive to CO! And she's playing Toronto's Massey Hall in July!

JLHewey, your post is a saving Grace.

  • I was priveledged enough to be at this show! Red Rocks is the best! The whole show was just as good as this...! Drove 10 hours to get to Morrison, with $4.00 gas worth every penny though!

  • The stuff of legends!

  • I am so glad that you got this on video, how perfectly classic.
