my first impression was that he was playing too fast. But then he surprised me . There's something that draws you in. You can't even click Pause while listening to him playing.
I've really come around. I couldn't stomach Gould throughout my youth, but in the past few years have started craving exactly the sort of sensitivity to lines that he exudes.
Whatever ones opinions are of Goulds Bach interpretations, there's no denying he was an extraordinary communicative force. A legend whose unique style will remain a vehicle for heated debate in years to come.
@MagicDonDino Ma come fai a soprenderti?
Tutto chiarito e soprattutto complimenti.
Can anyone explain why Gould is often not appreciated for his Bach interpretations. Not puritan enough, perhaps, with his frequent staccato? I find him (I'm a lay) absolutely captivating, made to play this music. This toccata is so perfectly played in this ruling rhythm, which never stops, particularly in the overwhelming final. I haven't heard anyone better.
I think it's mostly a question of "unconventionality" pushed to the limit. Gould's interpretations are quite often very different from what would be conventional - and I'm not going to discuss whether conventional is really that good. I'll just say that, no matter what people say, his interpretations of Bach fit the music AMAZINGLY well around 95% of the time. Of course, if you listen to his Mozart, Beethoven or Chopin you might find it horrendous. But this guy was born to play Bach. Hands on.
It sounded really easy to me at first. Then I tried playing it. This was the song that's hardest to memorize out of every single piece I've played.Yeah, never judge a book by it's cover.
Sometimes, feel free to laugh, I wonder about the idea of reincarnation in connection with Glenn Gould and Johann Sebastian Bach. It just feels so right, when GG plays Bach.
8 dislikes?!! are you kidding me?!?!? that's wayyyy too many....!

Glenn Gould will live on persistently. Forever humming with the B's.
This is an extraordinary example of a fugue and an extraordinary rendition thereof, thus it has become a touchstone for my own endeavors.
For the curious: A Fugue

I couldn't agree more kingfotog. That is an awesome progression! and right before that magnificent fugue.

It's Bach's, but he inverts the emphasis of bass and upper chords

anyway, I enjoy Hewitt's significantly more, her Toccata's actually sound improvised, which is so important. Beautiful phrasing etc,
Gould is something special though; there's no denying that.
musicsdarkangel 2 years ago
what grade is it?
purifyz 2 years ago
You may like his style more than Hewitt's,
but there's no denying that Hewitt's voicing phrasing is farrr more controlled/better. I hear accents in Gould's everywhere.
musicsdarkangel 2 years ago
Far superior to Hewitt's.
