Smart meters are not "smart". They jacked up our hydro rates big time, even though we've switched laundry and other electricity use to "off peak". The electric bills still went up. I bet businesses like my employer don't pay at these rates. You expect people to do laundry at night? What about seniors or stay at home parents? What about dinner? You expect me to cook at 9pm? I want to sleep by then, just another way to rob people of money.
@silverboyzzz Customers may be seeing larger bills as a result of the HST, which came into effect on July 1st and higher commodity rates that were introduced on May 1st. It was also a hot, humid summer so greater electricity consumption due to air-conditioning could also come into play.
@silverboyzzz Hydro Ottawa is just beginning to transition its customers to Time-of-Use (TOU) rates this month. Any bill increases prior to this time are not related to this new price structure. Small businesses will also be transitioned to TOU rates and large customers will continue to pay a variable rate that fluctuates throughout the day based on supply and demand.
