love my Bryd robin, smaller than the delica, cheap, takes a good edge, perfect for me as EDC because pulling out a 4in knife to open a box tends to freak people out.
Excellent knives at bargain basement prices! The packaging has since changed to mimic the Spyderco boxes, except with the golden Byrd logo and a Green/White/ Black theme.
Does anyone know why the HECK nutnfancy always (or used to) mentions that he's right handed when talking about tip-up and tip-down? It's not relevant AT ALL. o_O
I'd have thought the Byrd Meadowlark would be the one to compare directly to the Delica since the have almost exactly the same blade shape, blade length and weight, and have the same locking system...
I have plenty of knives made in Japan, China, and from the US. Fact of the matter is if the company (like spyderco or SOG) have good quality control then the knife will be fine. My foreign made knives hold an edge just as fine as my US ones.
I'd love to know what you think of the SOGzilla ti-ni small knife. Looks decent enough at a glance. Is it comparable to the Byrd Raven or perhaps the Delica, or Persistence?
@PlanBskate4444 i know the tenacious is basically a byrd knife but it has a spyderhole its made in china (the only non byrd made in china) 8cr13mov steel liner lock they seem pretty similar but thats just me
The Byrd has jimping near the choil because it was designed for your index finger to be placed there. The Delica doesn't have jimping near the choil because it wasn't designed for it.
Inspect both knives you'll see that your index finger will fit the raven but not the delica, when you choke up near the blade.
just got the combo blade version for $17.95 at knife center. love that store! i have no connection to them. go nutn', great recomendations im stuck on knives, so to speak.

It would have been nice if they designed the feather texture to down sweep towards the blade, instead of towards the butt of the knife for a better purchase. However, that design would take away from the bird theme.

Hit the gym dude! 3.8 ounces is too much but you will carry a Glock 17 with FOUR clips!?!? You are one of my favourite reviewers hands down, but shesh!! A li'l weight is good in a utility blade, too lite and it feels unstable to me.
@curtisskeete I'm with you on this. Everyone has their own thing with knives. For example I will never buy a blade that's under 3" because I hate small blades even though they can be handy. I will go with a 3oz blade but I have blades that are 8oz. I think it feels like it's not gonna fly out of my hand when it's a bit heavier.
I absolutely love the Byrd Crow, which is the Raven's little brother. I'll probably pick up that Raven eventually. Great comparison/review as always, Nutn.
The fact that the Delica does not have jimping on the bottom is the main reason I've steered clear of it so far. I find those jimped finger choils really useful for detailed cuts.
Great video, watched it about 4 times and I have this knife for a little over 2 months. Great knife. Anyways was wondering what kind of tool do i use to tighten the blade? Is it a torx t8? It is a star shape with 6 points
@Bl17Z90 i know its not as good as getting an answer from him, but he doesnt. In a previous video he said he didn't like the wave because he likes opening his knives with only a thumb hole/stud, and using the wavee would require training
"I bought a Crow and it was no better than a cheap Chineese $5 knife ."
The quality or the sharpness of the edge? I once had a raven - I gave it to a friend, who lost it of course - and I am planing on buying one again. I have several folders (spyderco, crkt, ontario, kershaw...) and the raven is still one of my favorites.
@roninstevie The Raven is an excellent size -- I like the knife but out of the blister pack it should have been sharper After I sharpened it-- it is now very good----- but I've never had that happen with my other Spyderco knives-- on the Kershaws
@roninstevie And on a side note --- if you realy want a good knife -- and don't want to put off paying your rent buy a good SOG --- my favourite is the Visionary --- smooth as glass -- sharper than a razor and great steel ..check it out.
I bought one two days ago, and the blade chipped on the first cut, the second day the clip broke out of the handle. I would not recommend it for edc, or general use.
I purchased this knife and i found a drawback. The hardware is of terrible quality. 2 of the allen screws on the clip were stripped brand new out of the box. All the hardware seems like its made of pewter and all strips very easily. The design of the knife is great, but quality wise you def get what you pay for.
get the raven G-10 handle. it reduces the weight to 3.3oz, easy to grip, and feels very light. with the G-10 it is lighter than the tenacious yet is a slightly bigger knife (also mine came razor sharp out of the box, at least as sharp as my kershaw leek)
Not for nothin nutn, Byrd is the word. I got this from sierra trading post for 14.95. The deployment on this thing is lightning fast. I went to EMS and grabbed a foot of paracord for my lanyard. I think everyone should have a Byrd Raven. Thanks Nutn
They have dinosaurs on the packaging...the hole design is likely meant to represent a "talon" or raptor "claw". Why there is dinosaurs when the brand is called "Byrd", I don't know...unless they are subscribing to the newest archelocigial theory that our present day birds are genetically related to dinosaurs...
One last word on the Byrd. These knives really need to be taken down all the way and cleaned inside and out...coming from the factory there is alot of grit and metal shavings inside.....I noticed a gritty deployment...and sure enough, tons of crap inside, expected for $25.00. Oiled and cleaned - much smoother now.
As well if you want to get anal on the Byrd, you can fine sand the liners, they are a little sharp next to the handle...I could see getting cut on it under certain circumstances.
Received the Byrd Crossbill, for those looking for a Syderco Civilian alternative for $25....this is it, keep the $125 bucks you will save. I know Nutn hates the Hawk blades...I like the look and the defensive slashing potential. The Byrd's are the Word. They feel substantial or as Nutn says....High Value. Great buy. One Raven on the way as well.....later Knife Peoples.
Either they make a GREAT looking blade (as in this case) and a not so great looking handle. Or visa versa blade bad handle looks good... And the ones that do both well are discontinued :P
I've owned a Byrd raven for about a year and a half and have not had a problem with it, except my liner lock is worn out so i wouldn't advise smoothing it back ...
They didnt grind the blade down for the liner lock to lock the blade in place so when the machine sandwiched the two sides together there was no room for the back spacer that keeps the blade from floping back to go.
Nutn - you said buy it, so I did for $15.93 from REI Outlet, 20% off and free shipping to their store close to home. I carried out your order and got a heck of a deal! Thanks!
Get the cara cara you will not be sorry solid lock back design i have two a G10 and an frn handle both are as good as my two endura 4's and there the same size there excellent.
The rat 1 is also a realy nice knive i have one and its damn cool, real fast maybe as fast as a auto/assisted knife realy cool the handle is comfortable. i bet you will like it.
If u want some more detaisl nutnfancy has a video on one :)
Great review, as always. The only comment I might make is that if I were going to make a more direct comparison to a Delica, I would choose to compare the Meadowlark to the Delica, as they have more similarities than the Raven. But again, a nice review of the Raven itself.
The scales on this knife(along with the Crow) are made of anodized aluminum(according to Spyderco), but both are available with G-10. Some of the other knives in the Byrd line are available in stainless or FRN(love my Starling!).
Looks nice. How long is the blade on the Raven? I'd like to buy one as a birthday present for a friend and maybe for myself, but in Germany the blade has to be shorter than 3 1/4 inch if it is fixable.
Great review.....I kind of like the heft of a heavy pocketknife. The Byrd line are mostly heavyweights.I have a Catbyrd, which is a sizable chunk of steel. Also the best quality, of the Byrd line IMHO.My favorite Byrd though, is the Crossbill.Have a G10 version in the mail. Will post a review when it arrives.
Hey dude, i'm in the market for and edc (my buck is just too damn heavy) that would also be a decent defense knife should it come to it. I'm looking at either the spyderco native or delica4 leaning towards the delica4 mainly due to the bulge in the spine of the blade that you can really get your thumb behind it. Would the delica4 make a decent defense knife for it's size and ruggedness?
you carry allot of weapons, in the UK if you were pulled over and searched in the UK you would be put away for upto 10 years jsut for carrying; hell i hate our legal system in the UK
any kind of weapons ban will only take away from good people who follow and obey the laws.
these weapons ban don't affect criminals or lessen the crime (ie look at CA's car jacking rate compared to texas) cause if criminals obeyed the laws...guess what...they'd be law abiding citizens.
Yeah, that never happens in areas with strong gun control, like DC, the murder capital of the world. Criminals don't obey the law. And you know, no one was ever robbed before guns were invented. With a firearm, women, the elderly, or someone outnumbered at least has a chance to protect themselves.
Really what is so bad about death? As long as it is not painful I would not fight. Also look at Japan's crime rate, lowest last I heard and there is a gun ban, this may have to do with culture but maybe not.
It might be the culture - look at Switzerland. Very high and mostly mandatory gun ownership, very low crime, and almost no home invasions. Or look at the UK's crime rate increases in the last few years despite extreme firearm controls.
Okay, if you don't care about death that's fine, but please don't vote against me being able to defend myself if you don't care. You don't have to do anything differently, but let me.
I can't vote as I am 15 but there will never be a vote it is the second amendment. Surely you know this. Wouln't suprise me if Barack found a way around it though.
The 2nd Amendment means nothing if you can have a gun, but can't carry it and must have it locked up disassembled and separate from the ammunition, like in DC. That was the whole point of the DC vs Heller case - Heller could protect others as a security guard, but not himself when he wasn't at work.
yes deffinatly a good knife for the money i own the byrd meadowlark. really good review man, good to see you love the delica, they are an awsum knife and is one of my favs also.
i think the pocket clip is kinda tight so i don't carry it much. otherwise though, it's such a pretty knife! the feather texturing feels very nice and contributes to the overall aesthetics of the knife (which are excellent)
Weird, the tip on the Delica 4 looks to be rounded compare to the pointy tip on the Byrd Raven.

For anyone considering this blade there is also a model with G10 handles for a few dollars more than the zytel handled one.

How does the linerlock hold up?

Excellent review! I prefer the lockbacks over the liners - I've had liners fail on me. Regardless, Spyderco is an excellent company nonetheless. :P

Will you hate it when you are not mugged at gun point?
guitarplayer7694 3 years ago
any kind of weapons ban will only take away from good people who follow and obey the laws.
these weapons ban don't affect criminals or lessen the crime (ie look at CA's car jacking rate compared to texas) cause if criminals obeyed the laws...guess what...they'd be law abiding citizens.
occlicker 3 years ago
Yeah, that never happens in areas with strong gun control, like DC, the murder capital of the world. Criminals don't obey the law. And you know, no one was ever robbed before guns were invented. With a firearm, women, the elderly, or someone outnumbered at least has a chance to protect themselves.
kadathseeker 3 years ago
No I agree criminals don't obey the law, making them criminals. But what I'm saing is it makes it harder to get a gun.

Only for the good guys.

Really what is so bad about death? As long as it is not painful I would not fight. Also look at Japan's crime rate, lowest last I heard and there is a gun ban, this may have to do with culture but maybe not.
guitarplayer7694 3 years ago
It might be the culture - look at Switzerland. Very high and mostly mandatory gun ownership, very low crime, and almost no home invasions. Or look at the UK's crime rate increases in the last few years despite extreme firearm controls.
Okay, if you don't care about death that's fine, but please don't vote against me being able to defend myself if you don't care. You don't have to do anything differently, but let me.

I can't vote as I am 15 but there will never be a vote it is the second amendment. Surely you know this. Wouln't suprise me if Barack found a way around it though.
guitarplayer7694 3 years ago
The 2nd Amendment means nothing if you can have a gun, but can't carry it and must have it locked up disassembled and separate from the ammunition, like in DC. That was the whole point of the DC vs Heller case - Heller could protect others as a security guard, but not himself when he wasn't at work.

i agree, it is a joy to use and carry..
sharpy002 3 years ago
i think the pocket clip is kinda tight so i don't carry it much. otherwise though, it's such a pretty knife! the feather texturing feels very nice and contributes to the overall aesthetics of the knife (which are excellent)

nice vid, I have the byrd Crow which is just a smaller version of the raven, I'm thinking that i'll add the raven to my collection anyway though.
