It's pretty normal to have backing vocals prerecorded and played at concerts. People do it even when they don't have to. Jeff did A LOT of the singing for ELO and so what if he had backing vocals prerecorded. There's a lot on ELO's songs that are hard to produce live. I don't know why they got so much trouble for prerecording SOME things. They still sang and played their instruments live. People acted like it was Milli Vanilli. They over reacted because that was clearly not the case.
@Velocity9s I would agree but since this was 1986, he would've looked outdated with the fuller hair. If anything, Jeff kept up with the hair and clothing trends over the years. He shed the fro look sometime between Xanadu and Time.
This band is out of this world! Really recomended, especially in Childhood, if you listening to this, you growing up to be Quality Man with great musical taste.
They didnt lip synch on the ''out of the blue'' tour, That old chestnut has been around for decades! they used a backing track on Some songs with Orchestral passages and sound effects and that was it! Check my remastered uploads if you dont believe me!, Peace!
Yes, I discovered since I saw it that the concert I saw on TV (The Tony Curtis intro one) had the Standin' in the rain album track overdubbed onto the live performance. This is what made me believe they mimed. What a stupid idea that was eh?
@BlackmoonUK yea it sure did, it has tainted a lot of peoples perception of this unique band, but i believe they are now begining to get the credit they deserve
some of the backing vocals were pre-recorded along with Jeff's acoustic guitar parts. Yeah they did play and sing live but that was along with the pre-recorded stuff
maybe so, but you can clearly hear Jeff's voice in the backing vocals and there are times when you can hear Jeff's Les paul while he's not playing it. Not Knocking them, but they weren't entirely "live"
ELO was a great live band. Lynne got tired of the intense touring of the early days of the band and enjoyed studio work more later on in the lifespan of the group.
I saw ELO in 1981 on their Time tour and it was a great show. No lip synching and they never did.
People who claim ELO lip synched never watched ELO in concert.
Charming... I think we are so used to have untalented artists out there, that we forgot that back in the days they were the real thing. SO nowadays, when you SEE and HEAR talented people we tend to believe that maybe they could be lip syncing. Sorry to tell you, folks, ELO NEVER LIP SYNCED! THEY DIDN'T NEED TO.
@digidudi You are so right. There was so much more talent around in the '60s and '70s. Nowadays, they rely on slick videos and mind-numbing repetition to sell songs.
so right you are...does anyone notice how much better people look in videos too? everybody is so fake....they don't get money anymore from me, that's for sure-greedy and non-talented is what the clowns these days are...
ELO was never a live band? They did 68 shows in 76 days in 1976 (check the Face the Music reissue booklet). Regardless, the band did not lip sync on the short Balance of Power Tour in 1986 (which this song is taken from), neither on the Time Tour of 1981-82. They learned their lesson from the Out of the Blue Tour.
i agree. To be fair Jeff hated touring and i think that's why they aquired that reputation. It got harder and harder to get him out on the road. Despite that, the live sound got better and better and by '86 they were at the top of their game. BRUUUCCCE!!!!!
Having seen the original ELO three times including the Out of the Blue tour, I can tell you for a fact that ELO did play along to tapes. This "effect" was used most during the OOTB tour when certain songs like Standing in the Rain and Sweet Talking Woman were almost entirely taped.
I'm as much a life long, die hard fan of ELO as anybody. I will likely croak one day while listening to an ELO song on my stereo but the truth is the truth. No need to try to soft pedal it.
You need to refresh your memory then check out my remastered Uploads of those 2 songs you mention, I said they never mimed!! and they didnt, of course they used back up tapes lots of bands did! Still not convinced? why would he mime flubbed lines?
I just listened to one of your remastered Wembly videos. First of all, I never claimed that ELO were guilty of miming. The question now is what mix did the audiences hear? I can tell you for a fact that the OOTB concert I went to there was a strong backing track used. I knew it beyond a shadow of a doubt.
So it's agreed that backing tapes were used. The band did play legitimately but also the backing track played too. The band evidently were fed through monitors the backing track to stay in sync. It was up to the engineer to adjust the level of each, the live play and the tape for a "proper" mix. You have proved from your "remastered" versions that the two feeds can still be separated and re-adjusted. This is fascinating to say the least.
The 'Out of the blue' ''A'' shows (spaceship) Ones had a backing track for time keeping purposes and cos the bands string players kept going out of tune due to the intense heat from the all the lights and lasers 'Mac' the mixer could turn up the backing tapes to mask the din, Its these particular shows that earned ELO the undeserved reputation of 'faking' it. I have seen ELO live also and i know they Rocked live
these stories have been a round for years, thats how jeff lynne got tired of all the bullshit, they used tapes for intros and thats it like most bands did, they did play live and brilliant they were to,these critics were jealous of elo being so successful especially during the punk era, but in the end they won as i think this rumour finished of elo as jeff has always been known as a perfectionast by his peers, damn u critics u ruined a brilliant band
My theory is Jeff Lynne was ashamed of how British his lyrics were and never offered up an explanation but the truth is that his use of the word "grouse" was completely proper and in the given context of the song makes perfect sense. Instead he caved in to ignorant americans who did not understand and sang along with "Bruce".
Fun performance indeed! I love how Jeff gets the audience involved. Goodtimes indeed! Hard to believe I was only 1 when this was filmed :-p I love this song and it's lots of fun to play on guitar because it uses only 4 chords! That's Jeff's musical genius for ya... But yeah, this is fun to play in different versions because you can tweak it around a lot because the chords and beat are so basic... Too bad they don't make 'em like this anymore :-)
I know jeff dont like playing live but surely if the bloke watched this it ought to give him itchy fingers! I was at this gig 7 rows from the front! Really bloody loud!!!!!!!!
Lead singer. Aka, Jeffery, is a genious. He Is ELO. Fell His electric Power. He runs the show and has not need to do so in 2008 because of his fortunes' interest that was earned.

They might not have lip sunched but they quite definiotely did use tapes for some of the music. I thought this was common knowledge.

ELO was never really a live band. Their
superb music lay in their studiotechnology.
It is hard to say this because I have liked
ELO since the late 1970´s. But obviously
it´s true.

if that is true then how would it be proper english to use in a sentence?
if i want a rimjob would i say, dont bring me down. or i think ask for a rim job first and if told no, then my response would be dont bring me down.
