  • best car I ever owned was an AMC......though it was a '75 hornet sportabout wagon.....still better than any detroit fecal -matter I had afterwards...........

  • Apparently you don't realize "SS" is a NHRA or IHRA Class designation; as in "Super Stock" and this is an "SS/H" 1970 AMX like the title says. Super Stock / H. In fact, you can race in Super Stock with an AMX from 1968-1974 and even the Hornet AMX.

  • WTF? SS AMX in '70?

  • love those cars. had a 68. wow. i

  • CCCCUUUUUUUUDDDDDDDDD GOD O MIGHTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THATS HOW YOU GET IT DONE:-D I CAN WATCH THIS CAR LEAVE THE HOLE AND RUN ALLLLLLLLL DAY LONG

  • No it is not a 343. It is a 1970 spec AMC 390 4 bbl

  • is it a 343

  • Why is it that I NEVER get tired of watching this video.

  • Thanks for being a fan of not only my AMX but of Superstock racing! It is a lot of fun and we all love the challenge.

There is work actually being done to the car and it will get posted here. Hopefully an engine on dyno video be the end of 2010.

  • I watch this video every week, I love it!!! My brother raced SS/K, and his car would wheel stand thru 1srt and 2nd like the amc. I miss the old days in super stock. I miss modified to. Great video, I love it, hope to hear more updates.

  • I remembered a radio ad back around 1971/72 that Kenny Goddell's "wheel standing AMX" would be appearing at SIR Raceway in Kent, WA..anybody recall this guy??

  • That is a" mean car" sounds great- looks great..

  • Now this is a badass American muscle. My father owned a black 74' Javelin AMX. Car pinned you to your seat. His ran upper 11's and could launch on two wheels also. Not as dramatic as this one though of course =) hahaha

  • Back in High School my buddy had two 1969 AMX's ( 390GP ) What a great car! I drive a 08 ZO6 and 03 Viper as a DD now because of the good old days!

    Peace

  • When I was a kid I could ride my Stingray pretty far on the back tire. Guess I just never grew out of that!

  • @superstockamx Hey speaking of riding a wheelie on a bike, when I was 12 I rode 4 city blocks...somehow it's just not as cool anymore after watching your car. Thanks for wrecking my record!!! hahahahaha.

  • @hamslice15164 His 60' time with the rear wheels are probably faster than your car will ever be.

  • Nasty Launch

  • what was the time it ran

  • That was a 10.10 @ 132, info is in upper right corner of video.

  • I'm sick of seeing boring ass automatics!

  • Well, I am sick and tired of seeing boring ass, unintellectual, YouTube posters, which means that, consequentially, I am tired of seeing idiots that contribute nothing to the world but pain, misery, and division like YOU, RagingBullshit340!

  • @notjustanotherface Hey Bro, it's not that serious. You gotta admit, most drag races are almost all automatic cars. That gets old after a while. You must have got your ass whipped by a stick car! Is that why you're so upset? Take a chill pill.

  • Yeah, me too! Btw, notjustanotherface, your comments are totally way-off base 'cause RagingBull340 made a CORRECT, HONEST observation adding something valuable to this post.

  • What trans is this running? 4 link? My dad, Bob Stieg's red 69 AMX runs low 10s upper 9s also with the 390 bored to 401 with an LENCO tranny. Won Superpro at Byron, IL last year. Similar launch. After 25+ years running his, I'm sure you two could talk for a while on that setup.

  • Jerico 4-speed as allowable in class (SS) rules. Advanced Clutches flywheel and clutch assembly. 9" slicks and Cal-Track rear suspension. AMX is being updated to 4-link and 14.5" x 31.5" slicks and full chassis change. Also extensive engine and clutch change (dual 7" Advanced Clutches clutch). Custom wheels. Taking a lot longer than I thought but I was going ladder bars and little else. Now it's way over the top. Just takes time and money!

  • The only real class left in drag racing PERIOD.Sky high rpms gutted out iron heads and tons of camshaft duration.I like mopars but its all evil Detroit iron.Nowhere else this could happen but USA

  • @mypurpled amc wasnt made in detroit

  • @smithdsmit kenosha wisconsin. to be exact.

  • I think it's great the factory's are once again throwing themselves in the mix. However, by all standards and practices of the last 45 years, both of these specialty built limited production factory race cars belong in Superstock, not Stock. As Superstockers, great. As Stockers, bad.

  • is this your amx??

    its a bad ass machine,..very nice..is it a 390??

other than the 727 transmission, what other connections to chrysler does amc have??

    thanks..and nice car..

  • Chrysler supplied variants of the 727 & 904 TorqueFlites to AMC. Ford supplied various other parts but the AMC engine was purely AMC and there is no inter changing engine parts with any other make. Chrysler bought AMC for the Jeep brand and AMC's "cab forward" design in 1984.

  • How do you feel about NHRA throwing in the new Challenger and Cobra jet mustang into the mix?

  • That AMX is f-n awesome! Stick cars are cool.

  • Stick cars in Superstockers are WAY cool!

  • everytime i see this it makes me wanna yank my sbc out and drop in a wicked 343 or 390 !

  • Ahhh...then my life is complete!

  • You go from seasons greetings to this? Must have been real party in that '61 Pontiac!

  • Torque convertors and trans brakes are in whimppy cars! My car has a clutch, a manual transmission and a 4-speed shifter. That's the difference!

    Geez...

  • yes, geez is right...seasons greetings.

  • did that bitchy attitude come with a cock in your mouth?

  • is that a torque converter or a transbrake? whats the difference?

  • My story, My friend had a 73 charger with a 400 in it, we were just kids back in 1985 and had a strip we would run up and down. Old man shows up with a stock 70 390 AMX 4 speed, we follow and roll up next to him, friend tachs it up and he does nothing doesn't even look at us either. Light turns green and he is gone 1st, 2nd, we had no chance i hear him get rubber in 3rd. lookin at his tail lights i said pops can drive that AMX dude you snooz you looz, he played the best head game ever. NICE CAR.

  • My first loss at a street drag race was my El Camino with a 396 against a Rebel Machine 390. It was embarrasing to loose to an AMC!

  • 'twas quite a machine that - the embarrassment is all yours for rocking up in a hick ute.

  • 1-2 shift would be 7200 and the 2-3 & 3-4 shift would be 7500 RPM. Not only is there a considerable amount of chassis work being done, I also dove into the engine. It'll be shifted when done around 8,000 RPM. Due to lighter parts will RPM much quicker.

Work is on a side-job type schedule, a slow moving process.

View count is at 42,000+. Never expected that, I would have thought a few dozen! Glad everybody is enjoying. When it goes out again, you will see it here. Hopefully late winter 2009.

  • I'll keep my eyes peeled

  • I'll take credit for about 1000 of the 42000 view-count. Awesome car! One of my absolute favorite youtube videos!

  • That thing screams!! What RPM are shifting at? It sounds beautiful!

  • about 7200

  • i have a 1971 javelin stuck a 1969 390 AMX motor with a 4- speed and 4.11 gears. when it launches it rips the panties off the girls in the front row. oh yea!!!!!!!!!!!!! BAD JAV 2

  • cool what color panties! lol

  • Well the guys left on the fence sure appreciate that but too bad your an 1/8th mile away by then!

  • nice AMX wish mine ran that fast. in time. body looks perfect amc can and do run strong! glad you left your 390 in!!I love amc its in my blood!dont know y people hate?on us.ford chevy mopar.they need to apperciate a fine ass ride like your and mine.LONG LIVE BAD ASS AMC CARS!!!!

  • i will second that emotion!!!! BAD JAV 2

  • i wouldn't say they suck either I had a 71 Javelin with a 304 2bbl. I left a 75 camaro he had 305 4bbl amc strong motor amc came out with 401 just to take on the 455 motors with dog legged ports on the heads and I ad a 401 .060 over in a 73 Javelin AMX I know just have one Javelin now a 74 Javelin/AMX 360 .040 check out my profile for 1st start up in 3 years its been in a storage

  • I had a friend that he had a 73 javlin 360 and his dad had a 71 javlin with 390. They were both dogs, you have some $ in that engine, stock they suck!!

  • Oh I wouldn't say they suck based on one family's lack of luck. The first drag race I ever lost back when I was 16; my 396 El Camino against a '70 Rebel Machine with a 390 and a 4-speed. I instantly had respect for the AMC 390. In fact, the 1971-1974 Javelin's with the 401 were consistantly amoungst the fastest available durring those hedious "smog" years of low-compression inefficient engines.

  • These are the cars that keep old goats like me coming back to the big meets, This is one BAD SS/H! Keep that thing a little straighter next time out of the gate...ok...can't stand to see one like this get too close to the fence, nice job of driving, keep snatching that four speed!!!!

  • Somewhere towards the bottom of this page I've addressed this. After much tuning and trying to straighten the car on launch it was finally determined the driver side floorboard was seperating from the rocker panel. That and a few other areas are being addressed right now. Hope to have it out again in the Fall.

    Glad you like the car!

  • hooooly shit that was tight

  • That is one sick ass AMX. I love to hear that it still retains a AMC 390 cu inch motor. I got goose bumps and shivers hearing that thing. We have a beloved 1969 B.S.O. AMX with the go package in our family all original and yes under a cover lol...

  • man this car is kick ass

  • my dad has a 69 javlin i crew up riding in almost everyday. and that thing is fuckin fast.

  • those are some kick ass wheelie bars

  • makes mad max jealous

  • I used to own the same colour AMX a 1969 390 bored out 30 over balanced blueprinted dual points hi rise manifold 3/4 race cam etc it was around 500 horses and it screamed! The 390 and 401 were made out of special race engine steel and were the best small blocks period!

  • My dad owned two of these when I was growing up one was modified for drag racing suc as this one the other was fully restored with the original 390. Boy do I miss that car.

  • The AMX was an underrated muscle car.. It could hold its own with the best of em.

  • ummm.. the sound of that engine just gave me a w**dy.

  • Thats one strange looking chevy.

  • When I raced this car in Stock Eliminator (D/S), it was the fastest car in all the land, Chevy's included. So I guess if I put a Chevy engine in it, it would just slow down!

  • That AMX sounds like a beast. I wish my '70 amx sounded like that. It's nice to see people racing these cars, instead them sitting under a car cover. Keep it up man.

  • What fun is it going to car shows?

  • i like amcs and amxs because there the underdog. people think they suck but they can haul ass just as good as the mopars and chevys. ford sucks

  • I had friends who owned Javelins and AMXs and many blew the doors off the cameros, mopars, and fords. They are also good looking cars. I had a 70 Javelin and people would say that is a nice looking mustang looking at the front and a nice looking camaro. I would say that makes this car TWICE the car any of those cars are. They(Camaros and Mustangs) are a dime a dozen.LOL

  • NHRA requires the correct engine in this Superstock class. AMC's are truly under-rated in power per cubic inch.

  • love to hear you kept an amc heart in that beast.

    MUSCLE CARS RULE.

  • thanks looks impressive

  • looks good what motor is in it

  • This is an NHRA SuperStock 1970 AMX. It uses the 1970 AMC 390 enginebacked by a Jerico 4-speed and a Dana 60 rear end w/ 5.13 gears. Stock style rear suspension w/ Cal-Track bars & springs and 9x29.5 M/T slicks. Engine is SS legal using an Autolite carb and roller valvetrain. Best times to date are 10.03 @ 131 MPH.

  • Jeff Lee: What a kick ass car! Sounds like a keller engine, too. Interested in seeing what a 4 link will do...

  • Looks good but it looks a little hard to drive I like mine low and straight..you know Boring

  • Well you have to start out low and boring before you start doing the wild stuff! Besides, if you notice in the video I have a problem going left. That problem will be resolved before next time out. It does raise the heart rate a tad when the guardrail is fast approaching and you think it might not be good to go over it!
