The tone of the vss is better then the sk-1 in my opinion. Reminds me of the Sega Genesis, ....wonder if yamaha used the same chipset from the vss in the Sega Genesis.
My buddy Brian had the SK1, I got the VSS200. One of the funnest keyboards ever. Wrote some crazy fun riffs with that things. I'm actually going through some of my old tapes and harvesting useable material from them, and almost all of the keyboard stuff was played on that baby. So much fun sampling with this. You could overdub sample, creating really thick vocals or synth pads, or VERY short loops.
I used to play on one of these as a child. When I heard this demo song it was so weird, like I recognised it and instantly remembered all of it. But otherwise would never have remembered it.
I'm so gutted that our one of these got sold amongst stuff from my grandparents house. Probably for about £5 in 2000 when no-one wanted one.
I love this its like an 80's TV show theme maybe a game show or possibly about a family that adopts a girl robot from another planet in a fur coat that drives a talking spaceship and solves crimes that were committed on game shows while the little brother plays Atari and Nintendo and the older sister in high school keeps trying to date college guys.
people love this shit because its simplified. modern Synths are cluttered with so much technicality nowadays. People just want to have some fun and express some creativity in very simple progressive ways that costs as much a full tank of petrol
I like it because it's a sound that never reached it's full potential before it become "subjectively" disliked. There's no reason for this sound be less good than an expensive modern synthesizer. Maybe this video isn't the best example of this (as these samples really are almost toy-like), but definitely analog synthesizers and early FM/wavetable synths have a really amazing sound.
You mean none of you have heard of the Korg MicroSampler? ... it's the SK-1 of today and is already starting a wave of new, 'up-to-date' mini sampling keyboards appearing on the market. Don't expect to see low quality 8-bit samplers anymore... not when you can buy 2 gigabytes of sample recording for under 20 bucks! (think of mp3 players and digital note-takers).
You gotta think 21st century technology... not this old school stuff!
where are those "toys" today? Why aren't they producing stuff like that anymore today, especially with the extremely evolved and cheaper going technology. I grew up with keyboards like this and with software and thinking back, i allways had more fun with the keyboards since you could touch and feel them.
Ha! Ha! I remember the Yamaha! my first encounter with a sampling keyboard circa 1987! Hearing to that demo brought back some memories! Listening to it now makes me think of Sonic the Hedgehog on the Sega! (wonder if it used Yamaha FM chips?) And as for the SK1, I'm not familiar with that keyboard but straight away could think of 2 Acid House tracks that used that rhythm section!
Actually, the YM2612 is newer than the YM3812. Yamaha produced a range of FM synthesizer chips for different budgets. The most popular is the YM2151 which was used in a lot of Arcade games and the DX-9/DX-21/DX-27/DX-100 Keyboards.
Still have my old Casio SK-1 in the closet lol dont do much with it now but still works like new and looks like new too. Great little keyboard.I like the sampling you can do with the built in mic and line in i think? Nice Demo of both machines.
Ive had at least 4 casio sk-1 keyboards in my lifetime. 3 were stolen and i sold the fourth one to a equipment collector. I miss that damn thing!! LOL!!!
I've never owned either of these keyboards, but I absolutly love the demo on the SK-1, it's such a pitty that people Circuit Bend the damn thing, those keyboards don't need to be Circuit Bent.
i´ve got a circuit bent and an "untouched" sk-1. the circuit bent one has got a line-out and works like a regular sk-1 as long as i don´t mess around with the contacts or switches. but i love to mess around with them and get the most surprising sounds again and again...the sk-1s don´t need to be circuit bent, but they should!!!
i got me a bunch of sk1s (and 5) they can be had for between 2 and 10 dollars..get your fucking ass from out in front of the computer this weekend and get one at a flea market near you, instead of just loading some ebay hawk fuktard's pockets... unless you are buying one "bent" then ... well, the sky's the limit as far as price goes
Cool video! When I was young, my uncle got me a keyboard for my birthday and I've interested in them ever since. I remember it looked just like the SK-1, but I'm not sure if it was one. The difference I notice was that on the front top right it had a little door or window that opened up.
@VisionnerzBN It sounds to me like the keyboard you're refering to is one of the PT models such as the PT-82 or the PT-87, the door you speak of was for inserting so called ROM packs which had pre programmed songs on them for you to play along with.
I have this keyboard, but I have no idea how to use the sampler.

Yes because now we can play "toys" like a microkorg with batteries. Probably in 2030 children will play with microkorgs, and we?

Yes, it used Yamaha FM chips- 2xYM-2612, similar to OPL-2.
douro20 2 years ago
No, the YM2612 is a 4OP FM synthesizer chip, while the YM3812 (OPL2) only has 2OP per voice.
porcorosso81 2 years ago
So the old OPN chips were more sophisticated...didn't think so.
