In my computer ubuntu runs smoothly, applications rarely crash, and if they do, they don't freeze the whole thing. I had no need to download any drivers, everything worked out-of-the-box. There's plenty of free software and don't miss MS office at all. Open office it's a great substitute. Windows 7 seems okay, but when you look at all the money you will have to spend to get additional software it becomes insane. Paying monthly fees to keep your antivirus running? No way.
Ubuntu has worked marvels for me. I'm not rich so I can't afford a mac, but i don't care. I switched from Windows to ubuntu a few months ago and there was a learning curve of course. After all it's a new OS. But it's been worthwhile and now i'm comfortable with linux and all the free applications. Thanks to guys like Ubuntuhal who make these tutorials it's much easier to catch on. Plus its free, you don't have to pay fees, download massive patches anymmore o even need an antivirus.
You said it.. I have Mac OS X and a gorgeous LED 27 inch iMac, and never had any problems (I've been a Mac user for 2 years now), but I've tried a bunch of different Linux distributions on the side for "fun".. But there is a tons of flaws with every f..ing one... Either its driver problems, hangups, crashing a lot, or it just stops to boot... Im sticking with Mac OS X for GOOD.. NO linux for me.. EVER again... I see the good thing with open software, but if its not working, what's the point?
You're so right.. Ive given Linux so many chances, that I can say for certain its just crap.. If someone like Google started making linux into something good, it might be great after a lot of work.. But the releases that is out now, like ubuntu, is the opposite of OS X, they NOT just works, and they are user-UN-friendly... I don't even understand how people can use it on their machines.. But that's their choice :)
@christermadsen If you all above dislike Ubuntu Linux and open source so much why are you even bothering to look at a YouTube site designed for beginners to Ubuntu? Doesn't make any sense to me!! If its so "crap" why are you here?
I didn't say I dislike open source! I love open source! But I don't think anyone has managed to get Linux to work good enough for "normal" people to use it, even though Ubuntu are heading in the right direction.. So I say, its not really an option for the average user (most people) or even experienced PC users to use Linux.. Even though it seems spot on when I see people like you use it... If you bumped into problems with every single car you tried, would you buy it and use it as your main car?
@christermadsen I'm afraid we'll have to agree to disagree on this one. I'd consider myself to be an average pc user and I can do practically anything I could do with a Windows box. Cant speak for a mac as I've never used one. Ubuntu isnt perfect, far from it but I've had far less problems with it on the same pc than I have with xp, vista or 7. Some things are not so easy to accomplish on Ubuntu as compared to a windows box but its getting easier.
Totally agree.. I also understand your windows statement.. Windows is very all over the place and heavy to run and insecure too.. Like I said, I have never had good experience when trying linux (unfortunately, 'cause I really wanted to like it). I've tried everything from Sabayon to Ubuntu to Mandriva to Fedora.. Everything stopped working or crashed hundreds of times or just didnt work at all.. For you it works, and thats great, but unfortunately for me, it let me down many times...
Let's just conclude that both Linux and Mac are way better that piece of crap in MS know as Windows, even though that Linux isn't anywhere as user friendly and works as well just Mac it is still better than having to deal with real crap Windows.
Yes, let's :P I'd rather use Linux than WIndows, that's for sure!
But I so much rather use Mac OS X then Linux again :P But it was fun having a linux box "to play with" on the side for as long as it worked... :) Hehe..
@ubuntuhal My sentiments exactly. A friend of mine who is a Mac user recently had to start using a Windows XP based laptop. He was getting extremely frustrated so I instructed him via phone on how to download and install Ubuntu 9.10. He is much happier now because simplicity and security was a big concern for him. I'm a hardcore PC gamer but I have a lot of respect for what Canonical has done with Ubuntu.
Great video. I used to run ubuntu 9.10 but then went back to 7.. Still has a huge spot in my heart. And like you said, Its similar to windows. For me this is great for someone who wants to go to mac, but not right away.
Im finding it nice. Just nice. I dont use it as much, Seeing as it is on my desktop. I just got a macbook pro so im glued to that hah! Its way better then vista for sure. And going back to xp? Im hesitant to.. Windows 7 is a big improvement.
thx alot, i was looking for this kind of video for a long time. Now i can show to my family and friends how ubuntu look like and how simple it is to use. But ultimatly ill have to find one in french hehe
A french version of this video? You might have to wait a few years until ubuntuhal can learn French to the point of native-level. You could probably just compare it and use ubuntu as a Live CD and install the French package so they understand.
sven.. is that you?..

Who needs Ubuntu when you can just get a Mac?

Not everyone can afford a Mac. If you have one then consider yourself to be extremely fortunate.

Second hand Macs are very affordable, better than any cheap Dell Linux boxes.

I like everything in your video the clock ticking included.
Your voice is very pleasant and you speak slow so we
foreigners can understand you very well. Besides all the
information is very interesting. Thank you very much.
Best Regards,
