Caught this tour in Houston. Great show. They definitely changed my mind about being a pop band. They rocked several tunes. Tecolote was always one of my underground favorites, off the Guitar Man album.
I was born in 1973, but I sure do love this group! Wish more people my age or younger appreciated groups like Bread, which in my opinion are musical geniuses (is that the right word?)
I remember this show. The lead singer bit the head off a bat during the guitar lead. Or maybe I was hallucinating. I don't remember now. I was pretty high at the time.
Anyway, it was a wicked show. I almost lost my virginity that night.
Oh, thank you, Lite, for uploading this. I saw Bread just once waaay back when I was in high school, but I don't remember much about it. They were one of my '70's favorites, to be sure. I was fortunate enough to see the band on their 1997 reunion tour. They did a smart thing, when they added Larry to the band....
Larry Knechtel, is playing the guitar on this song. Larry, started his career with Duane Eddy as one of his Rebels. Larry was a member of Phil Spectors...Wrecking Crew. He played on hundreds of Hits. One of them was "Bridge Over Troubled Water" Larry was the Keyboard player for the Dixie Chicks. Larry, died on 8/20/09 of a Heart attack at the age of 69.
Was it the world who wanted that soft beautiful voice or was it the music label that wanted that voice? At any rate, how would the label know what the public wanted? A big guess? A sample of the radio comments? The rock side of Bread was brilliant, and rightly so, with Griffin's voice leading the way.
The record label made the decision, based on the fact that Gates had the first hit single for the group, therefore they determined that his sound was the most commercial. They stuck with the sound that had already been accepted, so the public never really got the opportunity to hear Jimmy's songs. The public was fed Gates, and it became the only Bread sound they recognized. But both Gates and Griffin did ballads and rockers with equal grace. The rougher songs were not just Jimmy's.
Ya the fans like to rock but the world wanted that soft beautiful voice but YA THEY CAN ROCK. The records have a great variety but when "Aubrey" comes along - MAN, what an oasis.
Someone here thinks David Gates is a 'hack'. YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING! Go listen to Ozzie or some of the new bands. . B-)
Well, lets put it this way, he was a big fan of "Just Call Me Angel In The Morning" Oh, I love David Gates, I'm a huge fan, but if you knew anything about his history, you'd know where I'm coming from. After all, this is the man who called himself Del Ashley!
Which song are you asking about? I assume you mean lead guitar. It's difficult to say, since they often switched off with lead. It was likely either Griffin or Gates on the first song. Second song was probably Knechtel.
I think these live tracks are fantastic. I've always had a soft spot in my heart for David Gates. Sure, he's somewhat of a hack, but who cares? Oh the memories!
You're welcome! Which vocals are you referring to??? The vocals are exactly as listed in the info window. One is by Griffin, the other is by Gates. :)
WHY, "BREAD" NEVER WON ANY AWARDS "THAT I KNOW OF? IS BEYOND ME. THIS IS ANOTHER ONE OF THE "GREATEST BANDS OF THE "70s ERA". BUT, IT'S STILL AS GOOD TODAY AS IT WAS IN THE 70s. DOES,, ANYONE KNOW WHETHER OR NOT THEY ARE "STILL TOGETHER OR NOT? AND CAN YOU TELL ME THE NAMES OF "ALL THE MEMBERS? LIKE ANOTHER AWESOME GROUP "NITTY GRITTY DIRT BAND" HAS BEEN TOGETHER FOR OVER 30+ YRS. ALSO NEVER WON AN AWARD!! BUT, THEY'LL HAND AWARDS OUT LEFT AND RIGHT TO THIS CRAP THAT THEY CALL "RAP"!! IT CRAP!!
No, they are not still together and haven't been since the 70s. They had a reunion tour in 96'-97', but it will never happen again. Two of them passed away in 2005. The names of the members are listed in the info window. Thanks for your comments!
Amazing live versions of both songs. The records company should consider releasing a live album of Bread for the fans, I'm sure they have a choice of quality concerts in their vaults.
The record company is either very stingy about releasing what they have, or no one ever made a point of recording enough quality live material to release. Maybe some of it was the group's decision. Numerous "best of" or "retrospective" types of albums have been released, which leave a lot to be desired. I think the lack of live material was a huge oversight. It's obvious their concerts were fantastic.
I agree, retrospectives on Bread seem to be compiled by people without vision or real appreciationof the group's music. I wish Rhino Records would take a stab at it, they're the best when it comes to that.
I agree. I always loved their harder rock side too. Take Comfort is fantastic, but I'd call it more a mix of hard and soft. It has several tempo changes.
I'm a Brazilian fan since I was a child. I don't believe that we can't find out any concert of Bread in the music stores around the world till now. Many groups with less success launched videos and concerts. Bread had quality and their performance could not be neglectful this way by the Elektra, Warner or who is responsible for this. It's not an opinion from who loves Bread. It's a fact! This is unfair with the fans and with the music culture.
Thats what I figured, I remember reading in the cd booklet on "Retrospective" David saying lead guitar work was done by whoever was having a good day at it, he also said that he wasn't that good at lead guitar
Guitar Man? Can't be sure for this live version, but it most likely was Larry Knechtel, who was their bassist and keyboardist. He was never a lead guitarist, but he was the one who came up with the technique to get the sound they were looking for.
Actually, they both played lead. Griffin was often lead guitarist, but they were multi-instrumentalists, so all three of them switched off with the various instruments. Larry played lead on the album version of Guitar Man. The same switching took place with some of the other instruments.
who playes the solo? Larry Knechtel is playing bass I assume...?
