I'm currently attending USNA, and I must say, our 30 year old Yard Patrol boats are WAY cooler than your helicopter...NOT. Definitely the coolest Spirit Mission I've seen so far. I wouldn't call it a waste of money, because like the description says, it was a training exercise. Who said you can't have fun and train at the same time?

@CaptainVasily The problem was that those guys are probably use to flying down below the treeline, where the wind is minimal, not up at 25,000 ft. where everyone looks like a dot. And besides that, an Army Aviator would know how to spell "gauge". :-) GO ARMY, BEAT navy!

I'm glad that the Navy prides itself on its football program so much, becase there obviously isn't too much that it has on USMA. And honestly, Pilot, Navy Flight Officer, EOD, and Marine Air. Ok so you have 2 branch options that ever actually hit the ground fighting, tell me, minus EOD, NFO, Pilot, and Marine Pilot, what percentage of your class does that comprise? Because, in all honesty, only SEAL and Marine Ground seem to be your combat arms branches. 80% of USMA males go combat arms.
There are more Marines stationed in hostile territories than there are Army soldiers, not to mention that that isn't even much because the National Guard has the most troops over there.
A. Show me some numbers proving your point, and B. I'm not claiming that Marines are necessarily inferior to the Army, I'm claiming that more West Point grads serve their country in battle than Naval Academy graduates, especially since fewer than 150 Navy grads go Marine Ground where all 202 Army Infantry slots were filled for West Point's current class.

My final comments for those of you who think that federal aviation regulations were violated: 1)§91.15 of the Federal Aviation regulations states that "...this section does not prohibit the dropping of any object if reasonable precautions are taken to avoid injury or damage to persons or property", and 2)§91.119 states that helicopters are not required to observe the minimum altitude restrictions for fixed wing aircraft as long as the helicopter is operated without endangering people/property.
Too bad they completely missed the formation. If they had been navy or marine pilots, they would have hit their "target" dead center. Also, Army can "trash" talk all the want, but a team that has lost 7 in a row and just got shut out against Navy for the first time since 1978 surely can't have much to say....

Some might, I was at the Seal Camp at Coronado for a while and they're generally not the type that run around trying to kick the shit out people. Neither are the Rangers who I had to "babysit" some as a laison for a while. Across the board they were generally niceeasy going and level headed people. In fact people with attitude "usually" get cut early on.
I for one thing that was an EXCELLENT use of tax dollars!! regardless of whether or not they would have been flying anyway, tax dollars paid for it. But I say GOOD WORK!!!

Great prank, and Army needs a morale booster after losing seven in a row. (But hey, the Red Sox won in 2004 -- it feels great when a streak ends!) Helo flights are regulated, so it should be clear even to those who did not read the explanation that (1) the cadets had permission to put their flight training requirements (which would require fuel if they flew in circles around the Point) to good use in this spirit mission; and (2) they were told not to aim directly for the Mids b/c of safety.
As long as this was just a routine flight training exercise, I don't see where dumping some paper that says "Go Army" or "Beat Navy" is a problem at all. Honestly, if you think that all cadets should walk around stiff as a board for all 4 years at West Point (all of them have to do that for plebe year), then you are asking for something nearly impossible. This is nothing compared to what ROTC people do, after all, they're pretty much allowed to drink all 4 years of college.

Dude try telling that to his face. You wouldn't even be able to finish your sentence before you had a knee in your groin and a knife in your throat. The reason their landings were not as good as Armys' was because they were coming in so much faster due to the difficulty of their stunts. And plus, parachuting is not their specialty. They're just normal SEALs, not parachuting specialists like the Army guys were.
did you see the seals who did stunts and plummeted into the stadium before pulling out of their dive and landing on the field. The army parachutists were attempting to land on the 50, but the navy seals were just dazzling the crowd with their stunts. GO NAVY!! Keep the streak going!
geomike, I've seen many jumps (most of them from army paratroopes) where the American flag hits the ground. It's not like they were pulling it down for colors or something and let it drag through the dirt, that's a completely different story. I did find it funny how precise your parachutists were and ours looked like they were having more fun. I guess that's how it is though. USMA Cadets would kick USNA Midshipmen asses anyday.
Midshipmen are straight pusses compared to Cadets.
Football programs are a completely different subject.
...And to whoever said "Army has lowest requirements of all 3 Service Academies"......YEAH, that must be why Army is ranked #1 PUBLIC UNIVERSITY IN THE NATION IN 2008. #1. CHECK THE STATS.

If you're insinuating that "hitting the ground fighting" is in some way "better" than a different service selection or career choice, then you have some problems you need to work out. If you are indeed in the military, then please realize that the third person in your chain of command, ADM Mullen, the chairman of the JCS, is a SURFACE WARFARE OFFICER. Respect the service.

USMA is the 2nd largest attraction in the North East region of the United States after NYC. We dropped it on your formation and when people were there so it would make it on the news, which it did. And you and your English teacher are right, we did drop weenies on you guys, sorry we couldn't supply the real stuff, but you'll get enough of that when you go down under in your submarine.

Interesting. I find it hard to believe more people visit USMA than say, Boston, which is in the top 10 tourist cities in the US. But maybe Boston isn't included in your "North East region." Hell, maybe your "North East region" only extends from NYC to West Point.

I'm glad that the Navy prides itself on its football program so much, becase there obviously isn't too much that it has on USMA. And honestly, Pilot, Navy Flight Officer, EOD, and Marine Air. Ok so you have 2 branch options that ever actually hit the ground fighting, tell me, minus EOD, NFO, Pilot, and Marine Pilot, what percentage of your class does that comprise? Because, in all honesty, only SEAL and Marine Ground seem to be your combat arms branches. 80% of USMA males go combat arms.

I'm not claiming that Marines are necessarily inferior to the Army, I'm claiming that more West Point grads serve their country in battle than Naval Academy graduates, especially since fewer than 150 Navy grads go Marine Ground where all 202 Army Infantry slots were filled for West Point's current class.

1)We took advantage of our pilots going out for flight hours, thats how we were able to do this mission. They train to keep up their readiness. Sailors ride on real ships too.)

My final comments for those of you who think that federal aviation regulations were violated: 1)§91.15 of the Federal Aviation regulations states that "...this section does not prohibit the dropping of any object if reasonable precautions are taken to avoid injury or damage to persons or property", and 2)§91.119 states that helicopters are not required to observe the minimum altitude restrictions for fixed wing aircraft as long as the helicopter is operated without endangering people/property.

oh, and i was out there in the formation. falling paper and think plastic air-filled things won't injure anybody when dropped from that height. You'd have a bigger chance at getting hurt by a water balloon thrown out of the top of a 5 story building (which has happened at those formations during army week before.) Simple physics concept of potential energy. Paper and plastic blow up thingys have basically very little mass, thus they won't have much impact energy no matter how high are dropped,

I at least hope that some F-18's or something buzzed you guys at West Point though. Maybe we can pull off something creative like this next year. Good work on the prank, but as a hopeful navy pilot, I had to joke about the accuracy of the army. Our commandant, a pilot, joked about the accuracy of the dropped at noon meal right after that formation.

Yeah, my dad's in PSYOP, and was in charge of dropping leaflets for the Marines in southern iraq back in 03.
He thought the leaflet part of it was great, but said they did a sloppy job at calculating and factoring in the wind.
I just like how its friendly, and creative.

You really ought to be beanned from commenting on this. Honestly, a good few of "This kind of Leaders" (nice grammar) are NCOs from the real Army if you look at their ACUs. Also, If these people are smart enough to not only obtain admission to USMA, not to mention to get Aviation as their branch, then I'm not sure that labelling them 'stupid people' would be at all correct, especially when you are still making grammatical errors. Also, I've seen nothing about the Senate being involved.

Some might, I was at the Seal Camp at Coronado for a while and they're generally not the type that run around trying to kick the shit out people. Neither are the Rangers who I had to "babysit" some as a laison for a while. Across the board they were generally niceeasy going and level headed people. In fact people with attitude "usually" get cut early on.

Great prank, and Army needs a morale booster after losing seven in a row. (But hey, the Red Sox won in 2004 -- it feels great when a streak ends!) Helo flights are regulated, so it should be clear even to those who did not read the explanation that (1) the cadets had permission to put their flight training requirements (which would require fuel if they flew in circles around the Point) to good use in this spirit mission; and (2) they were told not to aim directly for the Mids b/c of safety.

As long as this was just a routine flight training exercise, I don't see where dumping some paper that says "Go Army" or "Beat Navy" is a problem at all. Honestly, if you think that all cadets should walk around stiff as a board for all 4 years at West Point (all of them have to do that for plebe year), then you are asking for something nearly impossible. This is nothing compared to what ROTC people do, after all, they're pretty much allowed to drink all 4 years of college.

Also, our military is number one in the world because of how well our soldiers are trained, i'd like to see you repair a jet engine, monitor a nuclear reactor, drive a tank, or fly a plane. I am Navy Grad(90) My Bro Is West Point(83) My dad WAS 82ND Airborne, have three cousins Army active duty.. so I come from a pretty level background on this issue. I think all of the Army Navy Pranks are great on both ends. This does seem a little expensive. Even if you need air time you give the libs and military haters the justification to bash us.. Dude try telling that to his face. You wouldn't even be able to finish your sentence before you had a knee in your groin and a knife in your throat. The reason their landings were not as good as Armys' was because they were coming in so much faster due to the difficulty of their stunts. And plus, parachuting is not their specialty. They're just normal SEALs, not parachuting specialists like the Army guys were.

did you see the seals who did stunts and plummeted into the stadium before pulling out of their dive and landing on the field. The army parachutists were attempting to land on the 50, but the navy seals were just dazzling the crowd with their stunts. GO NAVY!! Keep the streak going!

geomike, I've seen many jumps (most of them from army paratroopes) where the American flag hits the ground. It's not like they were pulling it down for colors or something and let it drag through the dirt, that's a completely different story. I did find it funny how precise your parachutists were and ours looked like they were having more fun. I guess that's how it is though. We always seem to have more fun, especially when we're winning 34-0 and on our way to our 7th straight victory over woops
