@nairasdtecth using water on the tanker was not an effort to put the fire out, i was to try and maintain the structural integrity of the tank. didn't work but thats what they were trying to do.

@vhluke well in fact it did work, they did know it was going to vent, they didn't have enough pumps or the equipment at hand to extinguish the fire so the next best thing was containment, what they did was make sure the breach was on the side of the tanker facing the already engulfed fuel station.

a bleve in any other direction would have resulted in spreading the fire towards the public, towards them or towards building not involved. best case scenario from a worst case scenario.

FYI that the fuel stn did not blow that was above ground pumps they can hold 60L to 70L thats all that blew not the underground tanks. the underground tanks are protected by 1 mtr of solid concrete and also has a cooling system.

It usually makes the incident last longer than it would if we just let it burn but its a public relations issue. The best tactic is to just let a tanker burn so there is less environmental impact but if important infrastructure is threatened we try to extinguish with foam. If the tank truck gives way later there will also be a "running" fuel fire, which is bad when it gets to the storm drains...

the sound is cool but what was causing the noise is not cool. the roaring sound was the tank venting. usually the roaring noise is a warning sign the tank is going to explode.
