  • Can i use liquid glycerin to make soap? Thank you

  • can you just use 1 type of oil like vegtable oil

  • I love your videos. WHere do you purchase your lye and oils?

  • Oh my god, I just saw big foot! @5:41

  • lmfao i saw bigfoot too!!!!! lol

  • Dave I love your vids, it's been really helpful watching soap videos and seeing different techniques. You are the most concise and explanatory.

One question: I use soap calcs online, but none of them give me a place to enter in honey as an additive- how does it affect my lye/water/oil percentages? Thanks :)

  • soap not completed

  • It's very likely

  • So my grandma used dried plantain skins that she roasted dark and ground up and soaked it in water. Was that her version of lye?

  • It's very likely

  • @12quillemall5321 Yeah, that makes a version fondly known as black soap; often from Africa.

  • Are there any organic alternative to using lye when making soap?

  • Lye is organic :)

But if you want to make lye yourself... you have to burn wood or herbs.. then run water through it and collect the water. This will almost always give you a base that produces liquid soap though.

But water and ashes is the way to go to make it yourself

  • you look like sheldon from Big Bang Theory

  • @jambro18 thats esacly wat i wz tinkin!=]

  • Is it cheaper to make your own soap, or to buy it?

  • Ohhhhhhhhhhhh, By the way, I do like your how to make soap video. I raise alpacas and want to make the soap and then felt the wool around the soap. It's like a scubbie.

  • What does your shirt say??

  • I'm wearing this shirt because I moodled in all my others.

Moodle is an open source course management system.

  • I'm confused about the amount of lye to use. I used the calculater on your website, and understand the amount of water to use, but the chart on the right under where it says "superfatting" confuses me. What determines what number to use? I get the the final row on the right is the amount of ounces of lye to put in the water, but which one do you choose? Do the numbers represent pH balance? Thanks for the video and the help on your website.

  • The numbers on the side are just a scale of how much oil will be left unconverted. I suggest a 4 or 5. The higher the number the more mild the bar of soap will be. The closer to 0 you get the more chance you have of having left-over lye in the soap which would dry your skin out.

  • Thanks! When I was in cosmetology school, we were taught that hair and skin has a pH of 5.5, so that sounds like a good range to go for. Soap should be slightly more alkaline, and conditioner should be slightly more acid.

  • where do you get palm oil?

  • A lot of soap making supply stores on the internet have it in buckets! ;) I usually use snow drift farms or original soap dish

  • where could i get a scale for only $9?

  • i think i'm going to stick to the melt and pour method, its much easier.

But where do you buy coconut oil?

i've been looking for it everywhere!!

    great video thanks for sharing!

  • I can't find coconut oil either, it's driving me crazy :(

  • You can substitute palm kernel oil for the coconut oil.

  • Hi, Could you give me your soap recipe? Thank you!!!

  • I just make them up as I go along. As long as you use coconut, palm and olive oil you will have a really good bar of soap. You can visit metaphysical farms (link in the description) and they have a lye calculator to help you make your own recipe

  • The lye reacts to the fat in the cream. It'd be like using butter with lots of water in it.

  • I am asking how the cream reacts is there a sour smell, crudelling anything like that i have never used real cream or milk to a soap batch just powdered goats milk

  • You can use the milk as part of your liquid for your lye solution. No , it does not smell sour in the soap.

  • who is the hvy whipping cream reacting to the lie and how is the soap comming out

  • I'm not sure who is reacting to the cream and the lye??? I don't understand your question.

  • his name is robert paulsen!

  • Do you sell your soap? How much do you generally make from selling your soap?

  • I've been known to sell a few bars here and there... I mostly just make soap for myself and my friends or make large batches to give away for charity gift bags. You could sell a bar for like $4 I suppose

  • how long is thw whole process

  • his name is robert paulsen

  • I want to eat you!

  • His name is Robert Paulsen

  • lmao his name is robert paulsen

  • Where do you buy lye?

  • On the Internet.... There are two different places... Original Soap Dish and Snow Drift Farms

  • his name is robert paulsen

  • wow, nice and informative, but a little... obsesive?

  • grate video and the web site is fantastic, thanks

  • wow... thanks ;-)

  • could u mix olive oil with glycerin base? pre made glycerin

  • pre-made glycerin soap? I would guess you could but only a very small amount... the oil will not saponify... you need a lye to make the oil change... but if you want the olive oil to be in suspension in the soap (to make the soap more mild) it could work.

  • explodes

  • Theres no way I could even read that chart you mention, no wonder people kill themselves making soap, theres gotta be an easier way lol

  • yes there is

  • jajajaja thats from fight club

    jejeje

  • fight club took the idea from me! ;-)

The history of soap is actually very long. It started with ritual sacrifice of fatty animals using fire.

  • I have no clue what that is. HAHAHA

  • cool mate u seem like a decent person

  • His name is Robert Paulsen.

  • Im making this for our chem prof, thanks... hey, are there simpler ingredients for it?

  • You will need lye (NaOH) but you can use any veggie or animal oil. So you can use crisco to make a good bar of soap if you want... just make sure you re-calculate the amount of lye.

  • hey, thanks... but my group just attempted to make soap... we're not sure if it would solidify, we only used, lye, butter(as fat), olive oil, soyabean oil, coconut oil and coffee... so were not sure if it would work, oh and by the way, do we need to place it in the freezer?

  • With the olive oil it takes a lot of stirring. The soap turns into a custard type consistency at first when you pour it into the mold. Then it will go through a major chemical reaction. it will actually turn into a gel over a few hours and heat up. It will get very hot and this is why you need to cover the mold up so you can keep in the heat. So please DO NOT put it in the freezer. you want to keep it warm. So cover it with towels and blankets for 1-2 days.

  • oh darn! we placed it in the freezer for an hour! oh my God! what could we do to save this "experiment"?

  • You could put it in the oven on very very low (100-140F) and let it keep warm for a few hours. You could also cook it. You can find it on youtube. Search for "crockpot soap"

  • hey, thanks man... you really saved our grades

  • hard soap= sodium hydroxide

    liquid soap= potassium hydroxide

whipped soap that looks like whipped cream= potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide mix, about an 80/20 blend.

  • Could a "bare bones" soap be made simply with Lye water and Lard?

  • totally... it would be a pretty harsh bar of soap but it would get rid of the dirt!

  • why did you use several kinds of oil? couldn't you use 1 kind only?

  • You could but it doesn't make a "good" bar of soap. Each oil adds a different quality to the soap. Coconut and Palm for hardness and lather, Olive and Soybean for moisturizing, Castor oil for big bubbles, etc etc.

  • Hi is your mango butter cold pressed unrefined? if yes can I get it at the grocery store? Thanks for the soap info!

  • I'm not sure if it's cold pressed. I just bought mine online but if you have it at your grocery store I'm sure it will work.

  • Very informative. Thanks... New to soap making and find it relaxing for some reason. Once again thanks.

  • im doing it for my project in chemistry..

  • nice vid.have you made grass soap before?

  • Thanks... It really helps because we have an investigatory project about this!! Thanks!

  • Hope you get an A on your project!!!

  • Thank you for making a comprehensive video on soap making! I have read many books, many recipes on websites and have been studying soap making for a couple of years. I have all of the ingredients, essential oils, a good scale, but the lye intimidates me a bit. This video really helps!

My goal is to make some Pine Tar soap. Have you made this soap before? I've heard it sets really fast...

Thank you for your help. Keep up the good work!!!

  • Thanks! I've not made any Pine Tar soap... I actually wouldn't know the first place to get Pine Tar hahahahaha... But I'm sure the Internets have it in abundance ;-) I've been experimenting with different types of herbal tea lately.

  • Very informative. Thanks!

  • Thanks! I love making my own soap... isn't it so much fun!
