I think its rather strange that you can grow nightshade or belladonna which is a deadly toxic plant that will kill you but, if you grow marijuana its a crime.

You need to make the distinction between lawful vs legal. This goes along the lines of rights vs privileges. You have the right to smoke, quit asking for permission (privileges) from a society you may not even belong to.
@RevolutionNewz You can patent plants. I wouldn't be surprised if they already had a patent on some of the marijuana plants that they create in labs. They would still have a monopoly because they could out produce any average joe growing pot and selling it at a cheaper price.
