I think the second verse of the song (sung by bruce) was actually inspired by springsteen and his song "Independance Day" from the river. He sounds so natural singing it.
@cfhripdime04 : I fully agree..as a bruce fan it hurts me to say, actually I don't think I ever said anything like this about any of the man's performances, but this sucks
Holy Cr@p - I was in the audience for these Awards. Can't believe I forgot this performance. This was before I got really into Bruce. I remember him on the red carpet getting out of a limo, but I totally forgot he performed... Thanks for posting!
@Deneb16 It's Enola Gay the B-29 in pieces at the Smithsonian Institution in D.C., not lol but it was a hell of a finish for a heck of a start to the show!
Wow this is good! I wish I actually knew what was going on in the 90s. too bad i was born in 92 and wasn't old enough to understand how good this music was! But I got chills up my arms when Bruce Springsteen came out!
does anyone know what bruce is singing in the chorus in musical terms? is that a harmony of like singing other notes in the same key? i've always wondered about stuff like that.
Impecable Bruce, demuestra lo que es ser un musico de raza,te arrolla como un huracan.Jacob esta anonadado con Bruce a su lado.UN GRANDE de verdad,Jacob logro compartir el escenario con su idolo
Bruce comes out looking leaner and meaner than he had in years, complete with bad-ass goatee and leather jacket, and snatches "One Headlight" right out of Jakob Dylan's feeble hands. He nails a great guitar solo, makes tons of great Bruce faces and even turns in the classic sharing-vocals at-the-same-mic-stand move. You're literally watching Bruce rediscover his ability to rock as the song goes on- bill simmons on this performance
@MrHandy1 this was from the '96 (?97) MTV video music awards. Even cut off, I was thrilled to find this on here awhile back..I never forgot what an awesome performance this was at the time, and am glad to be able to see at least most of it, anytime I choose now.
@Rachelamilan Jakob put a solo CD out a little while ago and the Wallflowers released a CD of all their best material and some unreleased stuff called Collected. Jakob;s solo cd is awesome I havent heard any of the collected stuff yet but i've heard good things.
bob is great but bruce is godly, he's proved it time and time again. id rather see bruce when he's 90 then dylan at 30. regardless of what anyone says bruce cant be beat
I think Dylan was trying to maintain his normal tone as in when he recorded the song for the album, whereas Bruce was energizing his vocals since it was live for a crowd.
Personally I think Bruce was doing it here better than Dylan. You can see him trying to match Bruce's energy at 3:20
Jakob Dylan did a great job with this song, but I can't think of any artist who Dylan could have chosen who would have done a better job than Bruce. I'd have to say that this song with the addition of Bruce is much better than without him.

Oh come on! I mean I love Bruce Springsteen but he is such a douche bag in this video. Completely lame in comparison to Jakob Dylans rockstarishness:-)
Don't think so, Bruce always has to over emphazise and force himself to be cool where Dylan is like his Da, just relaxed and on the ball with out trying. Keep it up Jakob.
Mick, Jakob isn't fit to change Springsteen's guitar strings. As for Bob... yeah, he may be a better songwriter than Bruce (Bob's better than everyone, in that department), but his voice is terrible & he's a boring live performer. Outside of songwriting, Bruce has Bob beaten my miles & miles...
Like Bruce a bit, but hate the the way he mugs and forces himself to get where he could get a lot easier if he did'nt try so(oooo) hard.Maybe he should change his own strings or perhaps even play them.
No, I'm perfect familiar with Dylan's whole discography. Electric or folky, he's not very good live. You should see that performance w/ him doing "Highway 61 Revisited" w/ the E Street Band backing him up & he was practically dead & his voice sounded awful. Face it... he can't shine Bruce's shoes as a live performer & I think most people would agree with me.
1997 mtv--took my daughter and niece to see rehearsal--Spice Girls--walked in the side door rt into Bruce and Jon Landau- could not believe-he said -their here for the spice girls-i said yes--he smiled and said ME TOO.then he rehearsed for about 25 min w/ the band....awesome..
Yeah, I'm sure mickeybrown and all of the rest of you f*cks are in great position to be criticizing either one of these two. I'm willing to bet none of you has the balls to pick up a guitar and learn to play, but you've got all the time in the world to sit on the sidelines with your insults. Have you ever considered shutting up, and just learning to listen, for a change? Or, do you just prefer to be another whining, hypocritical toadie, just like every other jerk with an Internet connection?
man i really disagree with the last few comments. i think the boss brought his own style here and made this a great (albeit different) performance and if you notice, dylan even opens up and rocks out harder than the wallflowers typically do after the first verse. almost like the boss brought out a more fun and less dreary side of him.
Wow... Bruce reining it in... you can hear the effort!
I don't think they work together really, but the Wallflowers version is awesome on its own, I would have thought Bruce would enhance it but maybe they shoulda rehearsed more.
I'm so glad Bruce didn't take this song his own way...but kept the feeling of the Wallflowers. When I saw he sang on this song, I thought he would dominate...but its just perfect
Sorry, but I disagree. Bruce is wonderful, and so is Jakob, but they are singing in completely 2 different styles in my opinion. And it doesn't sound right to me.
for the wallflowers, i think jakob is just right on feeling this song, i mean, he's not really as too headbanged or something, he's just natural. that's the way he is. although many said that bruce and jakob have something in common, i think bruce springsteen is being a legend of what he calls "rock music" on his on. and jakob, for me, has different genre and style that of bruce's. i believe they're both very good in their craft. and displays a different music statement to show off.
i guess bruce springsteen has a what you called "legendary syndrome" where being legend and ahead of these guys is a must. but, well, we can't do anything about it. that's the pride.
