Is it me or did that intro move anyone else!!! Wow, he probably has the prettiest licks ive ever heard!!! There so tasty!!! This is delicious guitar playing and how guitar should be played!!!
when I see eric johnson, I see a lot more besides a guitarist. I see a great musician and an great composer who is known for his melodic phrase, by his guitar tone but the most important of all, this gentleman is a perfectionist.
Eric Johnson. Born a musical prodigy & then into a virtuoso. This guy is totally original & has a waterfall of imagination, soul & technical percision when he plays.
He is totally committed to his craft instead of making millions. He also didn't get the title of "Tone King" for nothing. A true pioneer & originator.
@Easleytee - you know what I hate about people like you. You always think it's a "who's better than who" contest. It's like saying that Eddie Van Halen is a million times better than SRV, it's two completley different styles of playing. Or Yngwie could never touch Jason Becker's guitar skills because he can play sweeping arpeggios alot faster. This isn't a guitar contest to see who's better than who. music is suppose to be something you enjoy listening too & not a "who"s better than who" contest
when u finally think u can play the guitar FRIGGIN ERIC JOHNSONS SHOWS UP ON YOUR SCREEN AND YOU THINK EHHHHH OMG WHY IS HE SO DAMN GOOD !!! ERIC UR THE GREATEST !!! RESPECT !!
This is basic rock. If rappers start liking this, then soon rap will be extinct. Because if they like this then they would move up maybe even as high as 3XTR3M3 UB3R F4N OF POW3R! of MetallicA themselves.
@WeslieJJ94 sadly, not enough people now-a-days know about him to even think of a button like that, but if there was, I'd hit with you, such an under-rated guitarist
Absolutely the Best Guitarist on the planet. I've got all of his solo releases, its the best way to listen and appreciate his "total" musical abilities (playing & producing).
Only once in a life time do guitarists with this talent come 'round. Once you have a Top rated guitar company (Fender) dedicate a signature guitar after you, then I believe that its time he got his due, but he's been very very good for a very very long time. For most music listeners, Eric doesnt appear on their radar.
Don't hate me, BUT...I hear a lot of mistakes in his runs and a lot of sloppy missed key notes. I am impressed by his tone, but feel like he’s sort of incomplete as far as being a virtuoso player. He’s a great composer and most of the melodies are juicy and listenable, however, I think he blew it on a lot of the sweetest notes of the memorable phrases on this performance. I like EJ a lot, but am disappointed by this take. It's like he's rushing, or had not practiced a enough beforehand. Sorry!
@RobertBorden121 Do you have any clue about the guitar?? Ok, let's start with the basics: It's a stringed instrument. It has 6 strings. You use your fingers to play it....etc...
Amazing how someone could come on here and criticize a master and say "he had not practiced enough."LOL Youtube is always good for some laughs in the comment section.
@RobertBorden121 I sort of understand what you're saying, BUT to tell you the truth, I don't mind it when a great guitarist like EJ flubs a note every once in awhile. It reminds us that even the giants are only human, and it gives us mere mortals a glimmer of hope regarding our own playing. It's like, hey, if a great musician like EJ can occasionally flub a note, it's o.k. if we do, too. Always strive to be better, but in the end, remember, we're all only human. Play on!!
@jamitt I definitely enjoy EJ and he was great when I saw G3 live but I was watching this video because I wanted to hear what I hear on the recording and in this take it was just not quite there. He seems lost in his phrasing and misses on a couple of the real "money notes" in the melodies. My prediction is that this is probably not EJ's favorite performance of his either. I agree with enjoying some flubs, but it was on so many of the best parts of the tune.
@RobertBorden121 i don't think he's necessarily 'missing notes', he's just improvising over the melody. i agree that it can be frustrating when the song isn't played like it is on the record. on yngwie's dvd LIVE he solos pretty much the whole way over far beyond the sun and it's terrible.
@Axeman2006 Excellent call. People don't call EJ the King of Tone for nothing. :)
And an even better (because it's less obvious) call on the bass. Chris Maresh is a FANTASTIC bass player, IMO.....and in the opinion of many others, as well. He used to play with another powerhouse guitar player from Austin - Monte Montgomery. TOTALLY different style, but also a great musician. I think EJ's music suits Maresh's talents better, though.
@phileose hopefully your comment is a joke, it is hard to interpret sarcasm on youtube comments, but this guy MADE this song. The video game asked him if they could use it. again, sorry if i missed your sarcasm :)
Good improviser... But still Lenny Breau, no one can improvise like that guy, no offense... But maybe you won't like Lenny because of personally taste...
But Eric Johnson's improvisation sounds so like the Steve Morse 8 1/2 Minute Unnamed Solo... So Steve Morse took so much from Eric or vice versa or just coincidence they sound alike...
I think what we have here is a rare case of someone who is way too talented for the instrument they're playing (in other words, his guitar is holding him back). The few times he "messes up" near the end seem to come from a frustration that his instrument won't do what his brain is imagining. Eric Johnson is a god, and darn it there should be an instrument of some kind out there that a god can show his real creativity on. +10 Internets to the first person to create such an instrument!
