hey tim, great vids, I enjoy them a lot....i was wondering if you have ever thrown a sink head before and what is your take on how difficult it may be? thanks
My friend and teacher told me about your video's and the Flexible metal tool of death, I LOVE THAT! ive ripped a couple of really fine pieces with that tool and had to stuck so hard but its so necessary... Lovely bottle, I just learned/ how to figure out how to throw these bottles the other day, thanks for the tips with the top, thats where i always run into trouble
the shoulder is shaped to spread the weight too much horizontal to vertical and it sinks. too thin will do it too. compressing only lasts so long when you apply a force above it on such a narrow area. also if your moving up and not pressing down it helps.
I've sliced my finger on a stainless steel kidney (flexible metal rib of death) wiping off the clay. And I gather that that's why Tim regards it as kinda dangerous. Fingers are vulnerable when they get wet and soft.
Ok the metal rib of death, pulling is gaining height and making it thinner. Flexible metal rib of death allows the clay to slid past it and compress it as you do it. i prefer it to a rubber rib because it will only bend in one direction and will not give.
I wish I could throw when my clay has that much wobble, but I end up wrecking it... But I just started throwing, so I'll get better

i was wondering, what the size/weight of the ball of clay that you normally work with??

well bottles range from 1.5 lbs to 4 normally but I find myself throwing 12-15s for the wood firing.

ive tried to collar in the top of most of my pots but i can never get close enough. advice?

try collaring lower. to high and there isn;t enough clay to make it to the center.

well its all in the measuring. if you cannot throw a 15 pound bowl yet I wouldn't go after a sink yet. it may take less clay but more control.

Thanks again, it's definitely a timseepots morning! Are you compressing to strengthen it for the tall neck? Mine seem to sink.

How do you go about trimming the bottom of one of these? I've made a few similar bottles in an art class, but I can't seem to get the base level.
My instructor is horrible so I basically teach myself everything. Your videos have helped tremendously.

you need to throw a chuck and trim the bottle inside it. I made one for the goblet video, see if that helps.

I don't know why you call it "flexible metal rib of death", but I love it every time you say it.

What is the difference between "pulling" vs. "compressing" when you use the "rib of death"??
