There is nothing to be ashamed of here.Jaco surely stood on the shoulders of other GREAT players, but he was a perfect storm on his own.A head full of fabulous music, great fingers and a great ability to play "in the moment".Its pointless to speculate about drugs or mental illness when considering his gift and his impact.None of us were acquainted with him other than a handful of ppl who never knew more than half the story anyway.if he moved you at all, just dig it..if not, just walk on by.
Man, Jaco was great even when he wasn't high! Now that's a bassist! :'D Shame he died at such a young age, I would of loved to see him live in concert. He, Christian McBride, and Victor Wooten should of started a band :'D
Jaco really brang the bass limits to a higher level. And from then, others like Stanley Clark,Victor Wooten and more continued to feed young bassists with great ideas! Jaco lived short, but He did so much to music world! We salute You Jaco!!!
Yo, if you are gonna hate on jaco for reasons like this, there are plenty of other videos on you tube of him later on that are more suitable for something like that. This is in his prime, and in my opinion, one of the BEST videos of him up here. So have some respect. And if you don't like him, don't watch him :)
@Pastorius 333 No truer words spoke. Self medicating is not only dangerous but the people and places you end up in can be worse. Some of us are lucky enough to survive, and some others unfortunately are not. Wish people were more educated on drug and alcohol addiction along with mental illness.
i'm not sure exactly what you're referring to but the only thing I can think of is that he has a spring reverb in his amp so the spring vibrates and gets picked up.
fools the lot of yas, thats the sexiest nine minute fart youre ever gonna hear in your life.... lead bass can express sentiments and states of mind beautifully and complete just as well as any other lead intrument. go take your moaning about what you like or not like to your girlfriends house not on the comments page for one of the best music perfomances on yout tube.

Hate fretless bass. Sounds like one long fart. If you don't like frets, play upright for fuck's sake. I'd like to like this, but it's shit. ======> why drive a truck when you can drive a ferrari ?? (upright and fretless bass)
because a truck gets over speedbumps, that's why. Jaco also had an upright but it couldn't cope with the Florida humidity so it fell to pieces after a few weeks, so he decided to rip the frets out of his Fender, to get a similar sound.
its ment to sound farty basically. atleast you can hear electric bass. upright bass sounds cool on charles mingus and the other greats, but otherwise you can barely hear it. and upright bass solos tend to pull notes out of no where.
Yeah you are right on that. Lead bass does suck alot of the time, because its not really right is it. Personally i only like Jaco, because unlike the others, he doesnt play when its not appropiate. Sometimes, he does things that dont quite fit..but he knows more of moderation then Marcus and Wooten. I think at least.
Rowna spry sometimes its best to break out of a box you been trapped in and start changing things. lets not play the same music everyone else is playing, where is that going to get you? Start something new!
well i posted that 2 years ago... and what do you mean? Your comment would have made more sense if i said all i PLAYED was jaco, which i dont. I havnt played bass for about 2 years now, but when i did i did my own thing

Sure Jaco has proven that he is a genius and that he can play every style of music pretty much. But Cliff was just another bass player with soul like Jaco. Maybe not as trained at everything but still hell of a metal bass player...

Jaco is not only one of my favorite bassists, but also one of my favorite musicians. He was the guy that got me into playing jazz.
I always knew his hands were big, but when I saw them at about 8:40 I didn't realize that they were THAT big. Holy cow...

he wasn't addicted to any malicious substances, he was bipolar. There's a HUGE difference.
yeatsg 2 years ago
@yeatsg
I think he did come addicted, at least towards the end.
Over-excessive consumption of malicious
subtances while at the same time being a sufferer
from bipolar illness is not a good combination.
Many people who have to endure mental illness
try to self-medicate them with alcohol and
narcotics to escape from their increasingly
difficult situation. Jaco was no exception.

Does a Reverb or Delay pedal have the same effect as Jaco uses? i.e so i can play a riff and then jam over it forever :]
Snooch11 3 years ago
That "effect" jaco used is the bass. It's a fretless. AFAIK he also used some chorus and delay.
achtungjackass 3 years ago
what is that song that he plays at 5:25
i must know
because the other bass lines during that he plays funky broadway by wilson pickett and them changes by jimmi hendrix
which i both know
but what is that other one????
