Saw this film at the BFI Future Film Festival. Laughed and thought about everything in it through to the end. A magnificent film, and alongside Submarine, Tyrannosaur and Coriolanus shows that British film is going to kick some serious ass in the future.
@BaubleRob@callendrellist Which scene breaks the 180 rule? The car window scene? I'm not sure how that is. Is it because they're both on the left of screen?
@BaubleRob Yeah, but not crossing the line is not a cast iron rule. They have crossed the line and it still works perfectly well - there is no sense of disorientation, loss of geography, or jarring. Filmmakers often cross the line, for both formal and non-formal reasons - not being a slave to the rule is just as often a sign of good filmmaking as it is of clueless filmmaking.
@callendrellist Yes, the best filmmakers aren't slaves to rules, but this rule is a very basic one and I disagree that filmmakers often break it (I would genuinely like to see examples). Also, when any 'rule' of filmmaking is broken, you need a convincing reason. Admittedly we're not watching the whole movie here, so perhaps it's not fair to comment just yet, but I see no good reason for the rule being broken on a simple shot-reverse-shot like this. Can you name one?
@BaubleRob Sorry, had a quick look at clips from movies that I remember breaking the rule (jungle fever, JFK, Last of the Mohicans etc) and couldn't find one (its quite difficult without remembering the exact scenes, although in JFK I remember it happens during the 'thru the looking-glass scene', just couldn't find the video of the scene. So I looked at The Insider for an example (I was mostly looking at movies that I remember crossing the line and that were also very 'talky' as they are...

Ah! it won't let me reply with a youtube link! Ok, there is a clip from The Insider (Pacino Speech) posted by Chico31. At 1.33min, they cross the line and Chris Cazenove screen switches. There is no motivation for the switch, and they revert back to the original line straightaway. It's a small example and I'll send some more later, if you like?
@callendrellist OK, thanks. I wouldn't comment on whether every shot in that Insider scene is a good or bad choice, but I think when you have four actors talking it's harder for both the audience and the cinematographer to know where the line is, and hence when it's crossed. Same thing in the opening scene of Reservoir Dogs. With only two actors in shot-reverse-shot? More likely to be a mistake, I think.
@BaubleRob I think its pretty easy for the director and/or cinematographer to know that the line is between Pacino and the other guy standing up in most of that scene. New lines are established later in that scene and they choose to stay over Pacino's right shoulder for all of them. In the main it effectively plays out as a two actor shot-reverse-shot thing. Yeah, I was thinking about looking at R. Dogs but didn't coz had vague memory of the circling camera which would just complicate matters.
@BaubleRob I think you generally made a good point about crossing the line, the only thing I really would say is that as audiences over the decades have become more sophisticated/educated in cinematic grammar we tend to accept more visually.
My life is meaningless because I am incapable of laughing like that.

This film is so much deeper/funnier/grander/more poetic/philosophical/emotional/generally awesomer then the trailer.

So real/ Just reality, real lives, in a real story. Not glamourised, gritty, harsh, depressing. Real.
