All of you people who are freaking out about the calf being away from the mother, If you watch her she doesnt leave the pens side When she breaths you can see it! You can tell she is cold. Atleast this dairy farmer is letting them be by the momma and not taking them from them for ever, Yes when it comes weening time He will have to leave her side,Yes he may be hamburger meat, SO WHAT! Yall eat plants they are alive if you think about it. We raise our own meat Safer then what you get a the store
Lets be realistic. In the ideal world every calf plays happily in the meadow with his mother beside him. Some still do, but others are taken away at just a few hours and some get shot at birth as they are worthless. Its a sad old world now. Do we really want to pay this price for our cheap milk?
@mrssyringa Let's be realistic. In the ideal world we dairy farmers would get a fair price for what we produce and therefore be able to afford a cow spa and resort for them during their retirement years . FYI, the reason these calves aren't out in the meadow is because it was taken during the winter and was minus 0. The are separated from the cows otherwise they would fight over them and possible trample them. That wouldn't be very humane now would it?
@mrssyringa Let's be realistic, there's a lot of people in the world with no food, farmers' provide food, if you don't want it then don't buy it , you have a choice..we take the calves away at birth because the cows need to look after themselves, we could let them bond and leave them with their calves for a few days/weeks and then take them away, how cruel is that? What can we eat Beans? Not enough fertile soil to grow enough beans to feed the population..hey how about we get rid of people?
Well he's wanting his Mom for sure and she's crowding near the pen to see him together with the other Moms. Strict diet. What for? To produce quality beef? Not sure this is a compassionate operation at all.
i have a farm at my skool and we have cattle. last yr we got a poddy calf from one of our breeders and we had to feed it witha bottle its so cute and grown up and we wil probs be taking it to a show!!! i love cattle our cows have calfs but they stay with there mother!!! but yer thnx for the video
We keep the mothers with the calves for several hours before we separate them. The idea is to break the sucking reflex as quickly as possible and they are started on a strict diet that has to be carefully watched. The cow/calf luckily doesn't get too stressed. Safety is another concern. On this particular day our hopital area was quite crowded and cows will fight over a calf with the calf sometimes getting trampled causing injury or worse.
I like the fact that your cows have plenty of straw in their pens. it's nice to know they are cared for :-) and do cows ever bite? i had a horse once and it was kinda nippy, i wondered if cows bite or are they quite placid? pointless question but i like to know these things! :-)
Cows can bite but it isn't like a horse bite and it isn't intentional. They don't have any upper teeth, their upper teeth are way in the back. The bite doesn't really hurt, it is more of a large pinch.
it's farming people we do the same thing with goats so the billys ain't sucking momas teets when he's 15 months he forgets about them after u seperate them from the mothers and on a different diet we even had it with a doe which is a rarity
He is a mix of several breeds. The mother has a ring in her nose to prevent her from sucking other animals. It is a habit that is usually broken with the 1st two months of life.
Watch the video closely. The calf is separated for safety reasons. When you get a bunch of mammas (1400 lbs) around a few calves (80-100 lbs) then accidents happen...
Who are the Holstein heifers sired by? he doesn't look to bad, I'm doing 3 way crossbreeding with my guernseys, aussie (swedish) red and holstein, sometimes with brown swiss rather than guernsey.. how's Mum milking? and does it look like her udder will hold up?
The mostly Black calf is from 200H4779 Buckeye. The two mostly White calves are from 204H1013 Bojangles. Mum didn't hold up well at all and was culled from the herd. The udder was fine, she just didn't produce anything. Good luck with the 3 way crossbreeding. I'm still learning:)
What will you name him? He could be called "Patch" for the brown patch on his eye. It looks like she really loves him. AWW she wants to kiss him. Did she get to nurse him? Is he half Hereford?
Wow! What a wonderful mixture! I wish we could use his semen, (I mean when he comes of age) Now that you mentioned it, he does look kinda long legged. I am adding this to my Holy Cows! playlist :-D
