Minnie Riperton was great indeed. I love her music and I was sad to know of her death of uterine cancer back in I think 1980. However, she was not the one who started it all you gotta really go back way back to my grandmother's time, Ella Fitzgerald! Her voice was so high pitched would break glass believe it on not. Yes, Minnie is quite fantastic, but don't despair, people. The fact that so many other singers can do it too (including people with lower range like Christina Aguilera) proves what music teachers say all the time: that most women can learn to do this regardless of "range." Alto, mezzo, soprano--we could all learn. The best power in whistle register I ever heard was Eivor Palsdottir, the song "Foroyar Min Modir." Something forlorn and windswept in the Scandinavian style of delivery.
The only two people I have ever heard rival Minnie for whistle tone are Mariah Carey and Betty White. Personally, I prefer Mariah's sound in the whistle register, but Minnie is just breathtaking.

I didn't know it at the time perhaps, but I was so blessed to see Minnie in concert twice. She could hit those high notes effortlessly. She definitely did influence the contemporary singers of today who can hit whistle notes. Maybe Uma Sumac came before her, but Minnie is the one who influenced modern music. I remember reading that Mariah sang along with her. This woman, this singer, gave us so much. Minnie is a very special favorite of mine. Thanks for this overview.

THIS is who EVERYBODY falls short of---the QUEEN! So crisp, so classic and SO MUCH in CONTROL! I'm wondering why no one has included Chante' Moore or Trina Broussard! They both covered Minnie's classic song (Inside My Love) very well but I think Trina hit it dead on without too much ad libbing. Her version is in Love & Basketball. I really don't know why neither songstresses are getting the acknowledgement or airplay they both deserve! Mariah's not the only one who can hit those notes, trust!

Minnie Riperton was great indeed. I love her music and I was sad to know of her death of uterine cancer back in I think 1980. Yes, Minnie is quite fantastic, but don't despair, people. The fact that so many other singers can do it too (including people with lower range like Christina Aguilera) proves what music teachers say all the time: that most women can learn to do this regardless of "range." Alto, mezzo, soprano--we could all learn. The best power in whistle register I ever heard was Eivor Palsdottir, the song "Foroyar Min Modir." Something forlorn and windswept in the Scandinavian style of delivery.

I didn't know it at the time perhaps, but I was so blessed to see Minnie in concert twice. She could hit those high notes effortlessly. She definitely did influence the contemporary singers of today who can hit whistle notes. Maybe Uma Sumac came before her, but Minnie is the one who influenced modern music. I remember reading that Mariah sang along with her. This woman, this singer, gave us so much. Minnie is a very special favorite of mine. Thanks for this overview.

Why are people dissing Mariah Carey? Whether she lipsyncs or not, her voice still remains one of the bests of all time. There are only a handful of singers who had a higher range than her i.e. Ripperton.

well no, Minnie was not the reason why Mariah discovered whistle register.She said she discovered it when she was a child. she would speak in it and then proceeded to sing in it. But she did state minne was an influence.

Just because Mariah was one of the little girls that had means that she discovered it? Uh Uh! Mariah was born in 1969 and Minnie Ripperton died in 1979. Minnie Ripperton began her professional career at the young age of 15 which was in 1962 and Mariah did not even exist at that time. Mariah became aware of Minnie at around 1975 when "Loving You" first came out.

@DanyelHawkes Every little girl was sreaming in the locker rooms in school and around the house to Minnie's hit song "Loving You". So what made Mariah so special that she could sing in the whistle register just like every other little girl during that time that could too. What happened and happens is that less than 1/2% meaning only a handful of every female in the entire populated world keeps the whistle register, but every one of them got recorded professionally around 16 or so.

@DanyelHawkes Leona Lewis was recorded on her 15th. I was recorded with it on my 16th Bday in New York. I still have the highest C Notes Like Minnie, Mariah, Leona Lewis, last but not least of all Georgia Brown today. My point is this, Mariah was 10 at the time which meant that as every little girl still did, she had that natural born ability sing in the highest C notes. Heck I have even seen little a little 10 Year old and a 5 year old boy do sing in the whistle register.

Mariah was still a little girl, but only 6 years old, but old enough to be able to realize and get impressed with Minnie Ripperton's ability to sing in the whistle register. Mariah was tottally only influenced by Minne Ripperton because her momma Patrica can't sing in the whistle register.

Mariah is only recorded speaking one word in the whistle register that she never proved that she could actually do in a live performance. The song is "I Wish You Well" Mariah likes to take credit with music and songs that did not ever actually belong to her. She is one jealous obsessed woman.

@HiddNitePRandBSinger I beg to differ. On Oprah, MC entered whispering those super high notes when she and Whitney sang the Prince of Tides theme. Note: I'm not a huge fan of MC for her high notes. More for her lower register. "My All" is gorgeous. After she has the baby, she will gain a richness and a few more notes on the bottom of her register. THAT will be interesting to hear. Also, I suspect the songwriting will go deeper after the baby. Weeeeee'll see.

@lokijordan Differ if you must, but what you didn't get is that Mariah is the weakest in the lowest notes and she ran out of the vocal arrangements from unreleased songs done by a different seperated artists who recorded in the studio as well. Mariah used a blended voice with everyone one her records to impress people like yourself, much like T-Pain and Millie Vanilli used auto tune to fool everyone but the artists who actually knew and still know best.

@lokijordan By the way, "My All" was recorded, but initially vocally arranged by a different artist who is Mariah Carey before Mariah Carey even got the record deal. I am 100% certain of that because I was in the studio at the time that the song was recorded closest to the way that Mariah sang and partly recorded the main parts of it. As well as "Can't Let Go" too. MARIAH COULD NEVER SING LIVEST EVERY HIGHEST NOTE IN EITHER SONG WITHOUT RE-LIP SYNCING BOTH SONGS JUST LIKE SHE DID LIVEST.....
