The Soviets didn't try to "steal" A-stan, they've supported the weakened Afghan government against among others what you know today as Taliban.
They did it to stabilize the region which shared long borders with Soviet Union (Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan).
One thing that created a big resistance against Soviet presence was that the Soviets tried to get rid of the Islamic culture and instill modern values while
US supported people like Bin Laden - big mistake.

They were worried that the peace agreement between Israel and Egypt was an advantage for the US during the cold war. Had the US forces invaded Japan, not only would up to a million or more US soldiers have perished, but most likely millions of Japanese soldiers and civilians alike would have gone as well. The Japanese filled the public's heads with propaganda about the "horrible things" Americans did to civilians and prisoners. They either would have attacked the soldiers, or killed themselves like they did on other islands in the Pacific.

No the prize was for the first flight in Europe in 1906. However I have great respect for Santos Dumont and his early work in lighter then airships and later developments in the heavier then air. While Santos won the prize for flying 200+ ft in 06' the Brothers had flown 24 miles in 05'.
It is a shame that the story of his death (if its true) was a sucide caused by his belief that his machines had been turned into weapons of war.

@1littlelee You seriously have no grasp of the history of ww2. Without the US forcing Germany to divert a huge amount of its army to the western front, Russia would have lost. It was already losing momentum. Leningrad, Stalingrad, Kiev were already gone and the Germans were recovering from their initial loses to the Russians.
With France down, and the UK crippled and dying, Germany would have soon been able to turn its full military might on the Russians and it would have been all over.
