  • 4:20 amazing point

  • Never seen Chris serve and volley before this. What a treat!

  • @matjesworld - glad you picked on what I meant. I have just watched the 87 Lipton final where Graff killed Evert, and Martina had been def in the semi. She was in the crowd, I am sure that she was able to feel the change in the guard then. Interesting period in tennis 86, 87, 88. I remember the matches, well the ones that were shown on Australian TV and if I was allowed to stay up to watch them :-)

  • After winning 10 out of the first 12 games... to lose must have been a huge blow! Interesting to note Pam would finally beat Chris in singles about 3 weeks later (also in Canada).

  • Gezzz my spelling... you know what I mean in that below post. I miss all these old matches and the way they played. Todays women are so boring.

  • @48Blackman.. Pam was ranked 3 in singles for a brief period. I can not remember the datem but there was a time. Hard to believe. I guess it was really her reeach, and heacy serve/volley game. It was not her speed or ground strokes lol

  • @Matt31a23 It was at the end of '86. Pam beat Hana @ the VS Championships (quarterfinal) to overtake her as #3. Of course, this was within a span of 5 months when Chris was not playing due to a bad knee.

  • @thequinnster72 I will correct myself. Pam was #3 for a short time in early '84, not at the end of '86.

  • @Alwyn38, that same day Chris and Wendy Turnbull def Shriver and Smyle in the doubles final. I have it on video here somwhere. Pam was having a bad day. It was an interesting match, as you can see that Wendy was really coaching Chris in the art of doubles, like when to come in, calling her onto a shot. They had some very good matches and wins. I often wonder if they would have played more had Turnbull not played with Mandlikova more. Still Evert and Turnbull are still friends I read recently.

  • What a treat to watch Chris play doubles!

  • At this tourament in Vancouver, the world was to see the wave for the first time; the crowd here was crazy... and fun... it was a wonderful time. I will never forget it !

  • What's so much fun and ironic about this vid is that both Chris and Steffi serve and volley consistently on 1st and 2nd serves. Not even the top doubles players do that today. They were both, then and in hindsight, considered players who stayed anchored to the baseline playing defensive and offensive tennis respectively. Yet it's clear that they both possessed better basic volleying skills than 99 percent of the women who play currently. It's a shame this kind of doubles is not seen anymore.

  • could u post the singles match bts. Graf and Evert? Thanks.

  • LOL LOL Like she was frying a pancake. On one hand I find it hard to believe that Pam won so many singles matches, she was so awkward and so slow, though she had a very heavy serve and excellent volleys/reach, so that would always beat the lower ranked players. She was very arrogant though, I remember her making a comment when losing to Wendy Turnbull at the US Open in 1986, along the lines of not being able to play against lesser players. Wendy Turnbull was a much better player. Arrogance !

  • @Matt31a23 Yes Pam was very arrogant. I remember it was Navratilova, Lloyd, Shriver and Mandlikova (in ranking terms in 83/84). Pam always started wailing that she never got to play Chris on grass at Wimbeldon. When they did eventually play (at Newport Rhode Island) - Chris cleaned her clock 6-4 6-1. Pam never got near another grand slam final. Her fairytale run in the US Open in 1978 when she was 16/17 was her first and last!

  • @Alwyn38 That was 1985, and I don't ever remember Pam Shriver beind ranked #3, in the world not for even a second, I do remember Wimbledon giving Pam a # 3 seed, over Chris: by that is a very different thing, and of course it was a bit ridiculous.

  • Claudia Kohde-Kilsch! Hardly any footage anywhere and she must have got as high as No4 on the WTA computer! Pam's forehand always annoyed me - like she was frying a pancake. I always felt sorry for her - the Charlie Brown of the tennis world. Chris was the ultimate competitor- ferosh - this is 16 years after she made her debut. How many players could say that today?! As for Steffi - she won everything but only captured crowds towards end of her career in 1999....

  • I am shocked at how weak Kohde-Kilsh was serving, her second serve was landing mid court. That would be killed these days. Chris had some good solid volleys, but she didn't have the same power on them as say the two natural doubles players on the court, Shriver and Kilsch. What was with Shriver here? She was well of her game. Great to see footage like this. I wonder why Martina was not on the team, injury, maybe more cat issues (anyone who has read her autobio will know what I mean :-)

  • @Matt31a23 ... I have read Martina´s bio, (as one of “hundreds“ in my life - lol ) and I know what you mean. No,no, .. this time the cats are not guilty (-; I guess Martina had a tough year in 1987. First she was beaten in Melbourne, in Key Biscayne by Steffi, then she has also lost the French-Open Final, and Graf was only a few points behind her in the ranking. I believe, the Federation Cup 87 was not important for her.

  • @Matt31a23

Kohde would not play with her old racquet today; so her serve wouldn't be killed.

  • Chris has good volleys; Pam's the one missing everything.

  • Dear Chrissie, please take a thwack at the ball on your forehand side...just once at least? Gah!!

  • Claudia Kodhe-Kilsch is co-commentating this match. It's a re-run !

  • Terrific match anyone know why Martina wasn't playing or was it citizenship problems at this stage?

  • Really entertaining.

  • Good lord I thought Claudia Kodhe-Kilsch might have been a figment of my early childhood imagionation untill now......... and Chris Evert playing doubles!!!
