Mormonism isn't Christian. And they can stop asking Christians to call them such. If Christians ask to be called Mormon, will that happen? No. The value systems are very different. Mormonism is polygamous and polytheistic. (Intrinsically polygamous, practicing or not) M'ism says God was once a man who, thu works, was perfected into a god. This god was born into a universe of pre existing matter. They are other differences. Like, Adam=god of this world. and so on......

Joseph Smith ran for President with a platform that included the abolition of slavery. Elijah Abel (a black man) was ordained to the LDS priesthood on March 3, 1836. Walker Lewis (a black man) was ordained to the LDS priesthood in 1843. There are others as well who received the priesthood prior to the 1970s (I just don't have the names offhand), and there has NEVER been a restriction on membership/baptism based on skin color.

The Church during Christ time wasn't given to non gentiles until after Christ death, and was done as a commandant to Peter.
Also African Americans did receive the priesthood during the earlier periods of the Church, however, the rest of the country was very hostile toward or acceptance of African Americans, (and it nearly ended in a war) so we had to appease them.

The more violent forms of it are still not gone (e.g. homosexuals still being killed in other countries, women's rights in many countries) nor are the more mild forms of it in every country that we must not welcome, but be bothered with and be angered with, but solve in a more calm, reasonable manner. Joseph Smith ran for President with a platform that included the abolition of slavery. Elijah Abel (a black man) was ordained to the LDS priesthood on March 3, 1836. Walker Lewis (a black man) was ordained to the LDS priesthood in 1843. There are others as well who received the priesthood prior to the 1970s (I just don't have the names offhand), and there has NEVER been a restriction on membership/baptism based on skin color.

The Church during Christ time wasn't given to non gentiles until after Christ death, and was done as a commandant to Peter.
Also African Americans did receive the priesthood during the earlier periods of the Church, however, the rest of the country was very hostile toward or acceptance of African Americans, (and it nearly ended in a war) so we had to appease them.

I am most certain you can find a history of racism/sexism/persecution/etc in most all religions (though the Abrahamic monotheisms seem unparalleled in this respect), this is not a justification for you church doing so, and I think it quite disgusting to think so. I also think it odd coming from a religious sect that deals in moral absolutes to say that racism is tolerable because everyone was doing it.

Welcoming persecution because Jesus said it would happen is still a character flaw. It makes you into a North Korean, this is one offense I take with religions like this. Racism is a form of persecution, if everyone had just welcomed it, we would not be where we are (not saying we're perfect).

The more violent forms of it are still not gone (e.g. homosexuals still being killed in other countries, women's rights in many countries) nor are the more mild forms of it in every country that we must not welcome, but be bothered with and be angered with, but solve in a more calm, reasonable manner. I do not think those who undergo real persecution welcome it (i.e. Jews being forced into a gas chamber based on their cultural/religious beliefs).
