The Puccini is beautiful beyond words. However, I'll never forget that von Karajan joined the Nazi party (twice!) and gladly replaced Jewish conductors chased out of Germany.

Except thats wrong. But you are entitled to believe what you want. Von Karajan allowed multiple guest conductors including Bernstein (as a more famous example). Solti considered him a friend. The only soloist that refused to perform with him was pearlmann. Furtwangler was a real nazi.
