6000 line Ericsson Crossbar exchange changed over to Ericsson AXE as an RSU from Churchfield Exchange, Cork, Ireland February 1999. There were 2 more Crossbar Exchanges left, Wellington Road and Quaker Road and all were changed in the next few months. Ireland then had a totally Digital Network. I was one of the guys on the ladder...!
That was when Telephone Exchanges were interesting. Xbar took over from the early Step x Step equipment. Xbar was common control, which frightened hell out of the techs when it first appeared. We gradually got the hang of it, and it was a very good system. Particularly after we modified it to work in with the Aussie S x S system.
@enigma800 I think that there is always a reserved room in telephone exchanges. This is the place where the telecom technicians install the new equipment and transfer lines at midnight for several days as there are exchanges that can manage thousands of lines.
Click click click click hello dial tone click click click Whadda mean the software has to be updated to get dial tone... its an option? Ohhh you dont have party lines anymore. Yea we're working on that newfangled caller ID thing. Load up the 9 track the drive crashed. Probably would have been better off with the crossbar.
Dont lose heart. There's a complete exch preserved in Melbourne, Australia and also a hybrid SxS / XBar locked away in a sleepy coastal town in NSW, plus a heap of stuff in my shed. One of these days, when Telstra is no longer around, maybe, maybe...
@zordmaker hey wow what are the odds of that.. i happen to be in melbourne right now, and with a heap of time on my hands. where abouts is that exh? and do you know what it's called? i'll look it up and go for a visit i think.

How did they ever find room to put a new switch in there? Did they have to add on to the building?

This must have been one of the last crossbars to change over? Wellington Road was partially a crossbar too at that stage?
