IMO, because the Witches had no backstory from either the original book or the MGM film, I do think "Wicked" could be a workable prequel of the film, 'cause the film was done from Dorothy's POV & "Wicked" was done through Elphie's eyes. As well, I would like to believe that Elphie DID die, but like all "good villains", she would always find a way to return, as per the 90's 'toon that too could've also inspired "Wicked", as that 'toon revived Elphie too.
