If anything, today's cars are massively under-engineered. Old cars are over-engineered, because they didn't have a planned obsolescence when they were made, which is why they last so much longer.

If someone wants to argue that we're saving the planet with cleaner cars, hey, great, but to have the reason be that "gas will be really expensive" is something else. If gas gets that expensive, then business and consumers will both have a reason to switch to a different way of doing things. As of now, that reason really isn't there.

Cash 4 Clunkers is a joke. The main reason cars were so fuel ineffieint was because they got cheap with the performance when consumers were asking for a little more performance. So instead of making more power, they used the same exact engines with higher gearing. That increased an engine's RPMS which also increases the fuel consumption.

There's a few things about this program that could have used some very sensible changes. First, why was it on the news everyday that OMG! the program is so popular and going to run out of money!? WELL, why didn't they drop the qualifying MPG to a lower number like from 18 to 16? This would have slowed it down a bit and gotten the real gas suckers of the road. Instead the program took a bunch of nice clean, quality fuel efficient cars off the road, leaving the real pieces of crap on the road.

If anything, today's cars are massively under-engineered. Old cars are over-engineered, because they didn't have a planned obsolescence when they were made, which is why they last so much longer.

@fightttttt You're missing the bigger point. Look up how much energy and resources and pollution is involved in making one of those new cars, and figure out how long it will take to even break even on trashing an already-built older car that gets a little worse gas mileage, etc.
And I have no doubt gas could be $12 a gallon not only because of inflation that devalues your money, but because by then Big Government will probably get a carbon tax passed and screw over everyone.

If people dont go to hybrid/electric/bio then we are all screwed due to demand. I rather pay 30 bucks to fill my tank with bio or a electical plug then pay a 100 dollares for the same gas fill up, thus funding bp or a forigen oil company even more.

If someone wants to argue that we're saving the planet with cleaner cars, hey, great, but to have the reason be that "gas will be really expensive" is something else. If gas gets that expensive, then business and consumers will both have a reason to switch to a different way of doing things. As of now, that reason really isn't there.

Cash 4 Clunkers is a joke. The main reason cars were so fuel ineffieint was because they got cheap with the performance when consumers were asking for a little more performance. So instead of making more power, they used the same exact engines with higher gearing. That increased an engine's RPMS which also increases the fuel consumption.

There's a few things about this program that could have used some very sensible changes. First, why was it on the news everyday that OMG! the program is so popular and going to run out of money!? WELL, why didn't they drop the qualifying MPG to a lower number like from 18 to 16? This would have slowed it down a bit and gotten the real gas suckers of the road. Instead the program took a bunch of nice clean, quality fuel efficient cars off the road, leaving the real pieces of crap on the road.

look what cash for clunkers did, if a car runs and is 4 cylinder, dont matter how old or mileage on it, somehow prices have shot up to 5 grand for a used car. thats freacken crazy, you cant find a good cheap car anymore, they are all 5 grand, even if its a piece of shit. freacken government ! they raised the prices of good cheap cars that poor people used to buy.

cash for clunkers pretty much eliminated the first transportation for an entire generation.
i was trying to buy a car for over 4 MONTHS because there wasn't a decent car around for 6 grand anywhere/. they were all at the dealership getting sodium silicate poured down there internals.

don't forget having all but a quart of oil drained and no water and started till they either locked up or the internals were so destroyed that they were unusable. In other words go to the mechanic for a good gas milage car that needs an engine and find out what a new one will cost you. cause they won't be re-manufactured or used motors.

what I know that are clunkers, is that the car is lead to constant repare which would cost thousand of dollor to fix, for example why would you waste thousands of dollar to fix a clunker if its worth $800, if you can get a mroe reliable car than that.
