And im pretty sure proteins are completely required for our existence, they are a basic building block for life. You make a good point about all the things that go into intelligence though. But the brain was built on things we ate or it wouldnt have, we ate protein and the brain is made of proteins problem solved. Well i think genetics is important but with enough resources you can develop your intellect. I saw some time ago on a documentary (can't remember the name, it was a bbc one about evolution) that there is a cost/benefit equation involved in a given environment that would favor a large brain or not.
