I've studied theatre for 20 years, and I'm a theatre critic in Los Angeles for an independent newsmagazine. I've read Frank Wedekind's Frühlings Erwachen (1891). I was recently in NYC and saw Spring Awakening. I was completely underwhelmed.

I can only describe it as "Kafkaesque RENT." I found the staging interesting and the performers competent, but the rock adaptation of Wedekind's play was just unimpressive. It's disappointing, because I love the play in German,

I have been studying musical theatre for years now. When I saw this clip it was the most exciting thing I had seen since RENT. It's original, it's hard, it's not fluffly. I'm so sick of crowd-pleasers like Wicked and Xanadu. Even though these kids have a lot of growing to do vocally, they are powerful performers who have brought meaningful literature back to Broadway. Bravo.
