Despite the song's mediocre chart performance, it deserves immortality for a couple of reason, one of them being that it is only one of a handful of roller disco songs that is ACTUALLY about roller disco (or rollerskating)...I can only think of a few others: "Good Times" (Chic); "Roll, Bounce, Rock, Skate" (Vaughn Mason) and MAYBE "Suddenly" (ONJ/Cliff Richard). If you know of any others, please post them!
The song received mostly positive reviews from critics including one where the song is described as, "an excellently produced follow-up dance single." The song has also received neutral/negative reviews like one which describes Hell on Wheels as, "hoping to cash in on the disco-roller skating craze that was sweeping the nation in 1979."
In 1979, Hell on Wheels was included in original soundtrack to the film, "Roller Boogie".
Hell on Wheels was used as the first international release from American singer/actress Cher's sixteenth studio album Prisoner. Despite a worldwide commercial release, Hell on Wheels did not manage to achieve any success other than charting on the Billboard Hot 100 (at a disappointing #59), and peaking at #6 in Norway for over a month and #3 in France for a week.
i love this song my dad loved cher i want to add to my cher collection all of the cher videos and barbies avalible when i get my permit in june i will be hell on wheels
discoguy79, I wish I lived then. Other than the fact there was $20/gallon for gas around '76, and the last half of vietnam. Disco would of probably catch me by storm. It's so dynamic. It slips me into a strange mystical, mythical motivational thought pattern...
this was one of those disco/rock hybrid songs that came out in the late 70s, i remember those days well, i was in high school, that was an era that can never be duplicated, you had to live through it to fully understand its meaning and impact, im glad i did.
I wasn't born before the 70's. I can't stand most modern music. Gradually Disco has replaced my Classic Rock fasination. Disco, to me IS thought inspiring. Seriously. Almost all RAP, hip hop is s--t. Don't call women bit--es and ho's, You bought your stuff, never call it Sh-t. Sleeping with a girl you your calling a Ho? RAP has NO confidence! Disco focuses oneself to hights of motivation, wonder. A type of self-fascism, it'll keep you going against anyone, anything!
This song is my heaven. 1979 was so awesome. According to government data, it was the peak of marijuana consumption in America. They must have had something right. No other year before or after has touched it. Although life without the Internet as it is today would be hard to deal with, lol. LET'S ROLL!
Good clip - it would be really cool to actually come up with the original clip - it seems to be MIA although I remember it on network TV around its release time...
Cher rocks out on this late 70's classic & the lp is awesome and many of us wore out a number of vinyl copies trucking them to the roller rinks...Bravo Cher!!!
Have Cher's two disco albums on Casablanca records been released digitally-remastered? I have the Casablanca Years CD that combines the two albums, but it was released in the mid-90s before albums were commonly remastered, and the sound quality isn't so hot.

3:57 mark Cher in Lakers colors.
I'm sure she made Jack Nicklaus proud in that picture.
