  • Anchor: "I love cheeky."

    Katie: "I can tell."

    TOLD!

  • Is this real life?

  • @wogboy711 Are you asking a deep philosophical question, or whether this is a real TV show? The answer is "I don't know" to the first, and "yes" to the second.

  • that women is acting like katies obssesed with perfumes but to me most girls are crazily into perfumes. i bet she even has at least ten in her wardrobe.

  • AHHAHA SHE SAID SWAGGER.

  • you are such a great person

  • Katie can I ask you, because you were on television and everything. Do you sometimes meet very famous people ? Like Brad Pitt, or Angelina Jolie or Jennifer Aniston or someting ?

  • @Sukantara Yes, I've interviewed a bunch of celebs. And I've met Brad P and Jennifer A.

  • @KatiePuckrikSmells really wow ! brad is sexy. he now has so many kids. did you talk to them ? are they as pretty in real life?

  • @Sukantara Yep, Brad and Jen were very pretty. It was at a party. I briefly chatted to Brad in the line for the restroom.

  • @KatiePuckrikSmells lol wow ! Did he smell ok ? did you also smelled Jen ? what does she smell like ?

  • @Sukantara Those are all my details. No smell info, unfortunately!

  • @KatiePuckrikSmells i expect Brad to smell like a hot and steamy sauna and jen probably smells like a nice day at the beach. she has a new fragrance, so soon we all will know what she smells like. did you try her fragrance yet ?

  • @Sukantara Haven't tried "Jennifer Aniston" yet...

  • kate I love you

  • Hi Katie, you would make the coolest fourth "Nose" of the world!

  • @LeMarais88 :-)

  • you look great , love the dress, hair etc. anyways what perfume is similar in smell to Bond No 9 Hamptons and Creed Spring flowers in a cheaper version???

  • This doesn't help in the expense dept, but Bond No 9 Chinatown is a gorgeous sweet fruity/floral w/ woody drydown that you might like.

Try also Dior J'Adore l'Absolu (the amped-up version of J'Adore) and Fresh Sake.

  • Great interview Katie - you have a voice made for television. I definitely need to check out Shalimar, I love a perfume with a history!

  • You go Katie!

  • Katie... I adore your style and looks.. You act in such a natural way.. You're a loveable creature!

  • @Fanoulita Aw, that's very sweet of you!

  • Katie, After watching this clip, I was inspired to go to the department store and finally try Shalimar. Oh my God! It's salty and smokey with burnt sugar and vanilla without being too sweet. It's absolutely gorgeous. I could die a happy woman if this were the only perfume in my collection. Thank you!

P.S. I really enjoy your blog too.

  • @eeevilemma Oh yay! Isn't Shalimar a wonder? It's just the way you say it is, and not sweetie sweeeeeet. (And I'm glad to hear you're part of the antics at the blog - thanks!)

  • I was hoping to get a brief review of the Tom Fords Grey Vetiver you had there on the table.

Could you give me a quick summary of the fragrance on here? such as notes and longevity.

Great reviews in general, by the way.

  • Thanks for the props, auroraiceland. Yeah, I bought in 6 scents to talk about, and the producer cut it to 2 for time. I do plan to do a Grey Vetiver review soon, along with a giveaway.

  • Vetiver fragrances range from dirty/smoky/grassy to crisp and fresh, and Grey Vetiver is definitely the latter. It's a light, clean, citrus-y vetiver that deepens (but not too deep) into a bit of nutmeg and other spices, and dries down to a light woodiness. The vetiver gives it smokiness and mystery, but on the whole, GV is an accessible, well-made summer vetiver.

  • Katie, what dou think about Amarige of Givenchy? That's my favourite winter scent.

  • I've not gotten around to sniffing that one yet...

  • If I love and wear Shalimar edp all the time...what other scents should I try? :)

  • Shalimar lovers should also check out:

    Miller Harris Fleur Oriental

    Kenzo Oriental Flower

    Prada L'Eau Ambrée

    Bulgari Black

    Kenzo Amour

    Estée Lauder Amber Ylang Ylang

  • I think of Prada L'Eau Ambrée as a "summerweight Shalimar". It's very good.

  • Nice video! I love Katie's hair and natural way!

  • baaaah!!!!! I LOVE this!

  • about overdoing the spritzing and immunity, i once wore too much chanel no 5 and someone had an allergy fit. now i keep my spritzes down to one or two.

  • That must have been alarming! You want to have a reaction to your perfume, but not that kind of reaction.

  • lol :) yea that wasnt even the tip of the iceburg, lesson learned. i also layered three scents, which might have been a mistake :)

  • id read an article the sarh jessica parker layers her scents when she was promoting lovely, so i started giving it a go... layering is probably better left with those who have a good nose for it :)

  • Layering's a bit like cooking - you can't throw hotdogs, ice cream and lettuce in a pot and hope for the best. There needs to be some sort of connection between the scents you want to layer.

Sounds like you worked up quite an iceberg of smells!

  • lol :) you have a point there...

just ordered your book last night. might take me a month to read with all the stuff i have going on. ill comment when i read it. looking forward to it. is it like a memoir? i love memoir and non-fiction best.

hope you had a nice christmas and best wishes for happy new year :)

  • Hearing that you ordered my book is a lovely Christmas present for me - thank you! "Shooting From the Lip" is indeed a memoir.

    Happy New Year, tranquilbluesky!

  • =) you too

  • If you read Chandler Burr's "The Perfect Scent" which follows the creation of "lovely" it describes how SJP started the idea for the frag based on her own layering of 3 varied fragrances. I think one was a cheap drug store musk, the others I can't quite remember. The book also follows Ellena becoming Herme's in house perfumer and the creation of Jardin Sur le Nile... Good read!

As for layering, maybe start mixing frags WITHIN a house that's designed for that, eg Jo Malone

  • Oops, this was a reply to

    tranquilbluesky...

  • Oh, I read "The Perfect Scent" cover to cover! A surprisingly rollicking account of the creation of 2 major fragrances.

And SJP's personal blend was Egyptian musk oil, Bonne Bell Skin Musk and Comme des Garçons Incense Series Avignon.

I don't know - layering perfumes is tricky. To me, it would be like pouring 3 different wines into one glass: turning a fine sip into slop.

  • Re: Layering. I do agree, it's very tough to do. I'd suggest the best way to start is with lines like say Malone where each scent is pretty simple, it's just one or two clear notes and they're also all pretty mild so it's hard to overdo it.

Also, choosing frags that are "linear" are probably easier to work with so you don't have to think about the combo as each of 2-3 dries

  • The exponential potential for horrid smells based on endless combinations of top/middle/base notes twist my melon, man.

  • i LOVE shalimar. but i never bought any bc i was told its an old womans fragrance. now i think i might go out and buy a bottle.

  • I actually think Shalimar is one of the classics that feels very contemporary: very creamy with a hint of vanilla. It's a smoky, leathery version of all the gourmands out there now.

If you like the idea of Shalimar, but find it "too much", you might try the anorexic version, which is Prada L'eau Ambrée.

  • i like it too. i remember the first time i smelled shalimar when i was 15, i just felt like i was in heaven.

hmm never tried that one before. i check it out see if they have it at bloomys since im going to the mall today. thanks :)

  • Hallo there! I just discovered Samsara at a drugstore so I asked the sales assistant for a sample, she replied Samsara is "too much of a niche perfume or a lover's perfume" (she wrinkled her nose at this!), so they don't get any samples anymore. I find it wonderful, but ponder whether I would dare wearing it. Katie, what do you think of Samsara, also compared to Shalimar. I am sorry, if this question already has been answered.

  • @Gaubizi I'm always annoyed when SA's editorialize negatively on a perfume - especially when it's obvious you're interested in smelling it!

Samsara is a rich jasmine/sandalwood scent - very heady at first, drying down to a sensual hum. It's more modern in feel than Shalimar, which is natural since it was created in the 80s. Shalimar has a mystery borne of the fact that it's of another time.

  • Why'd you being stellanude ? You didn't talk about it but it was just sitting there....

  • tuberval - I planned to discuss all the fragrances I'd brought, but the producer cut it down to 2 because of time constraints.

You can read my review of STELLANUDE on my blog, KatiePuckrikSmells, com

  • Perfumiers? should pay you MEGA-bucks to be reviewed by you.

To me a non-smeller, it's like you're The SEER of SCENT

A service truly heaven-sent. It's a perfect career for you to mix your word-play in with your obviously genuine perfume passion.

For years I've wondered what these names like Shalimar smelled like, now I sort of know, - it's a bloomin' revelation I tell you!

I've always accepted that NOBODY ever gives a damn about the un-smelling, despite close calls with faulty gas-heaters!

  • It does my heart good to know that my wordplay isn't falling on deaf ears, even if your nose is a bit "blind".

Yes! Make sure that cooker's on "off" after you boil the kettle!

  • Oh! You know my nose-blind life so well!

  • OK, I just smelled Shalimar when I went to our local perfume store. It is absolutely beautiful! I love the slight weirdness of the notes at the beginning, though I'm not sure what they are. But it develops so beautifully and elegantly. And it's not as 'feminine' as I expected. Truly a masterpiece!

  • I agree, it's an odd, thick, almost-burnt cream smell at the top, and then it opens up to a smoky leather. Not typically "feminine" at all.

  • Can you review Halle?

  • Great job Katie! What type of job did you do before this and what made you get into this as much as you are now?

  • Thanks, carmela! I'm a TV host and a journalist, and I've hosted shows for Oxygen in the US and a bunch of stuff in the UK.

I started KP Smells because it was a natural way to combine my perfume-craziness and TV chops.

  • CarmelaG20! I'm in London so I'll take it upon myself to tell you what, "a bunch of stuff in the UK", actually means>.

Ms Puckrik is PROPER famous in UK from eloquently presenting cool music shows and such like on national prime-time TV. WE MISS HER !

Presenters are often quite RUBBISH here now.

So it's great to see her now in her element, looking not a day older and as sparky-spunky as ever in this incarnation as a magical human WINDOW on the world of smells. Woooooaaahh!

  • I was actually looking forward to your TF, Grey Vetiver review. I have not checked it out yet, but from what I hear it smells like a modern Guerlain, Vetiver. In addition, it is allegedly similar to Ormode Jayne, Zizan.

  • I am going to do a Grey Vetiver review soon. It's not sneezy/sharp like Zizan, and it's not soapy llike Guerlain Vetiver. The citrus cuts the intensity of vetiver, and it's a nice "lite" vetiver fragrance.

  • KATIE! haven't we talked about this? no stealing from little girls! It's not nice...Im dissapointed! xD

    :D your so funny!

  • Hahaha! I promise to TRY to try to not do it again.

  • lmaooooooooooo I was watching this show lmaooo .. E is so stupid. They had a dog fourtune teller on there & it was clearly fake they can't even act lmao.

  • can you do a review for coco mademoiselle (by chanel) please :) ...have you?

  • Haven't reviewed that one yet...

  • Awesome, I loved it!

  • this is soooo wonderful. it's happening. congratulations.

  • Thanks, Sissy!

  • Great interview! You have such a natural charisma ♥

  • Katie, I have a query: What are your thoughts on Kiehl's Original Musk Eau de Toilette? I just read a few reviews on Basenotes (a site you recommended) and some said it has that "dirty-sexy" feel to it, which I'm really intrigued by! I'm in the mood for smelling dirty. Thanks Goddess of Perfume!

  • Kiehl's Musk is one of the stronger musks out there. The actual oil is too powerful for my tastes, but I do use the shower gel version, which still has a pretty potent throw. "Dirty-sexy" is a good description.

  • Thanks Katie! I'm so buying this! Please appear more on TV! If Luca Turin is the Daddy of Perfume Criticism, you're the Goddess!

  • Shucks!

  • KATIE CONGRATULATIONS!!! YOU WERE FABULOUS! Sorry for the all caps - I'm just super-excited for you! xoxo :) Way to go Sweety!

  • Katie I see u as a Perfume GODESS...

I saw u rubbing perfume in the show n I have heard abt myth which says if u rub. u break the perfume...

    whometo trust.... ?

to what I just saw or to the myth...

  • Rubbing the spot where you've sprayed perfume won't change or damage the scent - it just rubs it off your skin faster than if you didn't touch it.

Rubbing the spot briefly is also a quick way to warm it up and get past the initial alcohol smell, which the host and I did in the interest of time - so we could get a more accurate sense of the perfume.

  • @1:35 are you thinking "why the hell did they choose that clip?"

'Cause that's what it looks like.
