This song came out in the late 60s and was played a number of times on WJRZ in the New York-New Jersey area! It was one of Elton's last two charting songs!
You're right, Wolfie. I first discovered Elton Britt over 30 years ago when Wally Whyton played the original and full 7 plus minutes of this track on his BBC programme. I've been a fan ever since, and collected as much as I can find. Much of his output is a little maudlin and sounds dated nowadays, but there's just so many real gems. His voice is so clear and just soars over the music. Wonderful.
@concord39 The original version of this song is 7min 10sec long, it was edited down to this shortened version which is the version usually heard. I originally heard the long version on BBC Radio 2 in 1980, I'd never heard of Elton Britt before, but from that moment I was really hooked on him. About three months after hearing him on the radio I came across his 1969 album: 'The Jimmie Rodgers Blues' on RCA Camden (Stereo CAS-2295 RE) - 11 sublime tracks, including the unedited version of JRB.

I think it was in '68 when I was playing around with my reel to reel tape recorder and picked this song up from WJAZ in Albany, GA. Glad I taped it! Very rare to hear a song of 5:40 length on country stations then. If there was room, they could've put these lyrics on Jimmy's tombstone.
I first heard this song by Elton Britt on the Bill Mack Show on WBAP 880 AM in Dallas back in the 80s. I fell in love with it then and there, but didn't hear it again for 25 years. Like the other posts, I never forgot it. Thanks to satellite radio, I FINALLY heard it again. Halleluiah! Thank YOU so much for sharing with us on YouTube! It's fabulous! Elton Britt also sang "There's a Star Spangled Banner Waving Somewhere." You don't hear much of his other songs. Wasn't he great at yodeling?
I´m living in Sweden and Elton is not well known here but I got by sheer coincidence to hear one of his songs on the radio for maybe 20 years ago. Then I got hold of an LP of him and the way it is.
Love this song. Iam now 34 years old. I got a job driving a truck hauling wood chips for freres lumber in lyons oregon when i was 21. Way up the canyon there was a old country station on the am band. This was the first time i ever heard this song. Even as a young man i always loved old country music as i grew up on it. man this song brings back those wood chip night time trucking memories. Thanks so much.
Thank you for responding to my question, especially so fast. I really do appreciate it.
Regarding your question: I have absolutely no idea as I am practically computer illiterate. I barely understand how to work my stereo. Unfortunately I'm not kidding. :-)
Thank you for trying. You are a very nice person as well as having excellent taste in music. ;-)
This song brings back fond memories.39 years ago while traveling late at night on the western kentucky parkway the engine in my fiat blew to smitherreens while listening to this song on the radio.I've never forgot it. My new wife and I were flat broke and walking east toward west virginia at 2 in the morning.

Great Song But It's Not The Whole Song It's A partial. Would It Be Possible To Do The Complete Song?

@wolfie28708
Sorry, this is the only version I have. Do you mean that there is a longer version.
I live in Sweden and Elton Britt is very unknown here so I was very glad when I find this song.
But I hope you can find the longer version somewhere.

We always had a hard time getting the radio station in Dallas to play this.
The original is over 7 minutes and that was the copy the station had.
Once in a while they would play it for us.

Thank you so much for posting this. Much appreciated! Do you have any idea where we could find the chords to this song? Or even just the lyrics?
Thanks for the music. I was raised on Elton Britt AND Jimmy Rodgers :-)

@buddyzroadie
yes I have the URL (adress) to an PDF-file whith lyrics and chords but I don´t understand how to give you the URL.
If I try to post the URL in this comment its simply not function. Maybe Youtube have some filter that rejects URL in the comment-field.
If you know any way to post the URL (or the PDF-file) to you I will do that
