Aviation communications use AM modulation contrary to FM modulations used in the FM band. The FM detector in that FM radio will not be able to correctly decode the AM transmission so you will hear distorted voices.
Use WORLD BAND RADIO..... to modify [ by my observation its best] , It's Very Powerful Receiver., i live from my nearby airport 14 Km. i can here tow way contact [Airband]
when i put radio to TV mod i m able to receive Police freq.
It depends on where you are. In some countries it's illegal to listen to anything else than broadcast, CB or amateur radio signals. In some, it's even illegal to possess a receiver for other frequencies. So you should check local regulations before listening.
It depends on where you live. I'm living in Germany. Here it's legal to own and operate a scanner, but it's illegal to listen to police, air traffic or other "non public" transmissions. In the UK, the laws are similar. In other countries, like South Africa, it's illegal to possess a scanner without a licence. In some US-States it's illegal to have a scanner in your car, unless you are a licensed Ham-Radio Operator or working for the police etc. On the other hand, who cares :-)
@marcrhsn Ohhh. interesting, i never knew that, however im lucky enough to be living in the USA. Although that will probably soon be changed if we stay under obamas rule. But your right no one cares, because the feds cant track you, esspecially when your not transmitting.
i love your weekend projects but i keep thinking im muslim and if the police ever came to my house and found some of your weekend projects in my house i would be in gitmo before i could say kipkay.
It is deception. On the air band work with amplitude modulation! How he could simple changes in the circuit to change the kind of reception? Delirium!
i try this ,but i didnt be abled to listen ATC.. :(( i live near Airport (LYBE airport) but i cant hear CTR... i catched a France and Hungarian local FM station with this modification 0.o
@meuberepic I accidently picked up police signals in the uk when I was 12. I was trying to hook up a plug and play to a mini tv but it had no inputs so I was holding the anntane up to the wire and then I fiddled around with various freqencyis and there was beeping and messages and basicly police stuff.
I tried this on two radios. My bedside clockradio and a clockradio I picked up at a big box store for $15. Expanding the reception range worked as described. My tuning range grew so I could tune in 107 MHz at around 98. Adjusting the "tuning transformer" was less apparent. One had diodes nearby, but tuning that one had no effect like it does in the vid. So I tuned the other, which did. I never could pick up VHF from airport 3/4 miles away, which has a constant weather broadcast around 132 MHz.
You couldn't hear it because 1) AM cannot be received by an FM radio (read my previous comment), and 2) you only offset its receiving capability by 9 MHz, putting the upper limit at just around 117 MHz, which isn't even in the 'voice' section of the aircraft band.
If you wanted to hear all of the ATC chatter (including that weather station), you would need to offset the receiving range upward by approximately 28 MHz. If you ask me, I'd say that's not possible.
I don't know if this is fake or not, but I think it's more complicated than you suggest: "If this transformer is tuned to a frequency of approximately 1 KHz above the IF frequency, the last IF amplifier will convert NBFM to AM." (google for source as the link won't post)
Your calculation of "add 9 MHz" would be accurate if this was a linear system. From what I experienced, the changes to the tuning range were far from linear.
1) Aviation radios use 'Amplitude Modulation', or AM, and thus cannot be received by a radio that uses 'Frequency modulation', or FM.
2) The 'air band' is from 108-136 MHz, however, 108-118 is nav-aids only. If you want to hear the aircraft, you'll have to modify the radio to go all the way up to 118 MHz and beyond (up to 136).
3) Even if the radio was on the AM setting, the upper limit of the AM broadcasting band is 1.6 MHz, which would be really hard to push high enough.
In the U.K. ONLY: "It is an offence to listen to any other radio services unless you are authorised by a designated person to do so."
This means that it is illegal to listen to anything other than general reception transmissions unless you are either a licensed user of the frequencies in question or have been specifically authorized to do so by an authorized person.
Its perfectly legal everywhere else, too bad I live in England tho :(
Whoever thinks this is illegal needs to think. I'm a pilot and thinking this is illegal is like saying a pilot can't listen to the regular radio. Anyways thanks kipkay I was looking for an easy scanner to have a backup if my avionics shut down. What I really need is a mod for a two way radio to do this.
@txtailtorcher no...they are only listening..not transmitting. listening isnt a crime, but if you transmitted on this frequency then it would be illegal
You can be at home can't you? VHF broadcasts more widely than normal FM radio, and if a plane is cruising at 42,000ft and can recieve transmissions then you can probably do it at home right?
Normal FM radio IS VHF. And on top of that, FM radio stations use transmit powers hundreds of times more powerful than that of an aircraft's radio. But keep in mind, VHF is line-of-sight, with a bit of over-the-horizon propagation. So no matter how many watts of transmit power there is, don't expect it to go very far over the horizon.
Only "crime" is monkeying with an old FM radio, it's ruined. Once you do this, it's out of alignment for "FM radio" (88-108 Mhz). It's unlikely you'll get it properly aligned again for music, unless you have test gear & knowledge. Unauthorized transmissions are illegal, but this is receive ONLY. If you're listening to commit a crime, that's a no-no. Scanning radio bands is NOT illegal (it's a hobby); however tracking police/cell phone bands is illegal (+900 Mhz).
@brazian777 yes. they are using public radiofrequencies. it is only illegal to transmit on anything that you dont have a liscence to TX. however you may RX on anything that you are able to or they would not sell scanners to the general public. in simple words you can listen but you cant talk
