The last time we ran the shay, the sanders didn't work, but we just used the portable cans of sand and it worked fine. I don't think our shay could have run on wooden rails since the engine's over 67 tons.
October 06 it was a wet and cold rainy morning and there where leaves all over the tracks. probably some ice too. because the sander where not working then the shay did not make it up the hill at all. If the sander where working then it might if made it but it took a few tries even with hand sanding the track.
Hesston always does a phenomenal job when they restore a locomotive, and #7 isn't an exception. Well done!

it does not need sand, shays were meant for this type of track.
