I just saw him play Liszt's first piano concerto a few weeks ago. I didn't like the piece - I'm generally annoyed by large, random amounts of runs - but I think he did the best job he could to sell it to me.
In this video he's very active; moves around and gestures a lot. He's toned his movements down now, and I think it's made his sound better. Not to imply this performance is bad, obviously.
Wow!! This song is THE most beautiful piece that Rachmaninoff ever wrote. I think it's his masterpiece. I love this pianist also. He has the most amazing technique, the way he just ever so softly caresses the keys & makes them "give-up" the music. Spectacular!!!
Another wonderful pianist joins the ranks of the 'fameux inconnus'. He lives in Manhattan, and probably teaches. There are so many fantastic pianists around today, unknown, and whose life and career will mean nothing. At least we see them on Youtube for a while. (until somebody claims copyright infringment and then they disappear forever). Amen.
Absolutely wonderful. Could not stop the tears from flowing. Where are his records ? He will have a brilliant carreer. I have heard people sobbing and moaning in his performances. This is something that almost never happens. You should hear it- it is like being overcome by love and sadness and joy at the same time. Indescribable. Go hear him live anyplace you can.
he's still doing extraordinarily well, living in manhattan. he took some time off to retrain his technique to the taubman technique. playing better than ever, if i do say so myself.
Most people don't realize that the 18th variation theme is an inversion of the opening theme. Try it. Rachmaninoff was super clever here as well as being an all 'round piano and musical genius.
It has been used in a number of films, the most famous of which was "Story of Three Loves." The music topped the charts then (I was a kid, and many of us bought the music to learn on the paino - the 18th variation isn't that difficult to learn). Jakob Gimpel performed it then.
"I must tell you I take terrible risks. Because my playing is very clear, when I make a mistake you hear it. If you want me to play only the notes without any specific dynamics, I will never make one mistake. Never be afraid to dare." -Vladimir Horowitz-
Compare: 2:45 the pianist's face and the woman to his right :DD

As a musician I've suffered through some concerts with a director like this one. He looks more like he'd directing traffic than being a conductor.

What a superb rendition of a great, great melody.
It was played with love and tender emotion. Watch the hands; they don't hit the keys they caress them with love and feeling.
I weep as I watch.
Bravo!!
