Was the goal to make it as cheap as possible? If not you could use magnets to levitate it while it spins versus a metal rod that probably creates a lot more friction. Some copper coils over those magnets and you have a power generator too.
@helloman1976 yes cheap was the goal, The rod sits on bearings with little friction and yes I have made a stator for it, but some might want to use a pma or treadmill motor with it so what ever ya want. Thanks for the comment bro.
Perhaps you could try hanging it from the supporting arm, then make it so the arm could rotate in the direction of the wind. Then you could add a small stabilizing rod or even just a wire to the bottom to stop the turbine from wobbling on the lateral axis. You would have to attach the generator to the arm but could offset the extra weight with a counterbalance on the other side.
Looks like it works pretty darn good man. I may just have to see if I have enough junk laying around to build one of these contraptions! Not sure if these would make any power with low RPMs but every little bit helps!

WORLD RECORD: BIGGEST WIND TURBINE
Visit: windturbinecarriedbywheels.weebly.com
ZERO-NOISE from gears and generators since they're sealed underground.
SAVES THE BIRDS AND BATS since the turbines are slow-moving.
DOES NOT NEED TO OCCUPY A WIDER LANDSCAPE since the turbine can be very tall.
MAY BE LOWER-COST since it can use parts of junked trucks and others.
ELUDES HURRICANE FORCE since the blades automatically close.
HELPS THE WIND ENERGY COMPANIES since it is FREE FOR ALL.

Its cool finding things made to do other jobs and using them for new things. Got to think outside the box! Good Job.

thanx for your comment, It is only just under 3 pound and you need to hook it up a stator.

1:17 - I agree... my next turbine will be a VAWT because my wind speeds aren't that fast here. Sounds like the dogs like it, too. :-)

Only if there were larger cups, that'd be even more awesome. Good work!

The simplicity of genius. $8.oo for a vawt.
cheaper than pvc, already cut to length. and they have ends to mount screws to the circles. those bearings come from a ceiling fan dont they.
