this may have already been answered or not, but did you just speak the lines in this vid or did you sing them in key? if not, would singing be more harmonic with the vocoder effect compared to talking (like in the case of a talk box) or no?
@RockaRollaZombie With vocoders,, you don't necessarily have to "sing" in chord with the carrier/synth. However if your own voice is WAY out of tune by lets say an octave or two,, you would notice it,, just speaking in a monotone voice is ok if you speak into most vocoders
@AlainHubert Thanks,, I used an Oberheim OB8 for the sound input. But there are way better carriers to use for better sounds, in fact, this is not the best use of the Bode (I was just learning how to use it) The better video is this one (key in "bode vox intro") you'll see what I mean
@AlainHubert I've seen that one before, I like it. Actually he used the Moog Vocoder. I really want to get my hands on a Syntovox. I was thinking of a project, like making a video of the top 4 analog Vocoders in history and up there in price, and doing sound on them....1) EMS 2) Sennheiser 3) Moog/Bode 4) Synton. Soundwise, EMS and Bode I think are the best in clarity and richness. I dont see whats so great about the Sennheiser, I use to own it and thought it was no big deal so I sold it.
@intromix You're right. Giorgio did use the Moog clone of a Bode 7702. And in that video he used a Polymoog synthesizer as carrier.
Can you tell me if the "warbly" semi-vibrato sound produced by the vocoder on sustained notes the result of the carrier sound from the synth or is it a result of the analog vocoding ?
@AlainHubert Hmmm, not quite sure what you mean, in Giorgio's video? Give me a time frame. If the carrier has that vibrato sound, thats why any vocoder would,, If the carrier is just a straight sawtooth pulse with no vibrato, thats how the vocoding will sound.
@intromix Okay, that answers my question. It must have been one of the presets of the Polymoog that had some slight vibrato that I heard (not in the video but on the CD version of that song). Thanks. I know one thing, I heard (and used) a few vocoders (all digital) from Korg MS2000(16 bands), Novation Nova(40 bands), Alesis Ion (40 bands), and only one came close to a Bode 7702. The Nova. It recreated the sibilance pass-thru better than others. But not as good as the Bode (or Moog).
excellent sounding vocoder,,i still think analogue hardware vocoders sound better than software versions, the software ones are more like harmonizers::
@adrian0rataj "Sample and Hold" was actually done on the Sennheiser Vocoder VSM201, not the Bode 7702 Vocoder nor the Moog 16-Channel MBVO 327A Vocoder as I previously and erroneously used to believe.
I don't think it sounds that much better than the roland svc-350 but I really wonder what it would sound like with different carriers, using the patch bay etc.
Does anyone know what the patch bay does? I mean can you modulate the frequencies or what? Or are the outputs?
Would be nice to hear more with the buzz/hiss knob changed etc.
@PhotoAnimationGuy Those are for use with a modular synthesizer. You know those big bulky ones. And I disagree with you...this sounds WAY better than my Roland SVC-350 Vocoder and the others here on YouTube!! Click my name and you can hear my vocoder in some of my vids. Here's my playlist of my vocoder...youtube. com/playlist?list=PL6D1F6CBA17FBE05B&feature=viewall
@dustytwa Hey bro, you should post some samples of it here, Synton is a Highly respected Vocoder and is in top 4 for the Vocoder family. I sure would like to hear the sounds from it!
As great and excellent as this vocoder is...it would have been more so IF they made it stereo instead of just mono. You should make a video but make it duo-mono!!!
@funkb0x This and the Moog are selling for no less than $4,000 USD. With the Moog, as I've been told, you are really paying for the name, as opposed to the sound quality. The next Vocoder higher in price would be the Sennheiser VSM-201 (I have samples of it posted here as well) and sells for average $7,000. Finally, the king of all Vocoders is the EMS 5000 and Ive seen it being sold from $17,000 to $25,000 USD. Sound wise,, the 2 absolute best Vocoders out there is the EMS and Bode.
@funkb0x The least-expensive I've seen a Moog go for was just over $1800. However I was offered by choice of two from the company back in '85 with only minor scratches but fully-functional for $550. I didn't buy one...and now I'm PISSED-OFF about it!!! The least I've seen a Sennheiser go for is $4000 from Texas.
BRAVISIMO, Chris, BRAVISIMO!!! This actually sounds BETTER than your EMS Vocoder-System 2000B Mk2!!!! *********** stars!!!! The Cylons would've sounded great using this (if they didn't use the EMS Vocoder 2000 W Mk1 (beta)!!
@intromix This is ABSOLUTELY WAY BETTER than the Sennheiser (even though this has 16-channels/bands compared to the Senn's 20)!! You NEED to make one video comparing it to your EMS Vocoder-System 2000B Mk2...and a Cylon vocal video!!! Btw, do you once again have a Sennheiser? It sounded like it on your other MixxTraxx version of "Disney's Main Street Electrical Parade"? I now rather have a Bode than an EMS!!!! I like to have the Bode compared to the EMS 3000 (the James Bond vocoder in NSNA).
@VoiceEncoder No, the other video is the Korg DVP-1,, I had it for about 6 months now,, I use it for my "singing" vocoder LOL. So far I think this Bode is the #1 sound also, more so than the EMS and Roland,, FORGET Sennheiser, I never really cared for it much
@intromix The Korg DVP-1 is a digital vocoder...the first, I believe. I thought you didn't like digital vocoders (like me)!! Even though your Bode is FANTASTIC...I doubt it can compare to the EMS 3000...and definitely NOT to the 5000, Nor the Synton Syntovox 221!!! But again it blows my SVC-350 and your 2000...OUTTA-THE-WATER!!!
@VoiceEncoder Well, I EQ'd the hell out of it and thinned it out to sound a little smoother,, I really like the sounds of the Prosoniq Orange Vocoder,,, Which is the ONLY Virtual Vocoder that I really like,, I wanted to make the DVP-1 sound very close to it,,, Sennheiser is now OFF my list,, PERMANANTLY!!
@intromix Okay, that explains why I thought it was a Sennheiser. But why do you even want a digital vocoder, I thought you were only for the classic vintage analog vocoders...like me?

Great demo !

@intromix yeah, I've seen it too.
Have you seen the video promo with Giorgio Moroder from 1979 ? He used a Bode 7702 vocoder throughout his album E=MC2.
Key in "Giorgio Moroder Promo Video" and watch at around 1:08 into the video...

@AlainHubert The best use of the Sennheiser is on Mr. Neil Young's 'Trans' album followed by Mr. Herbie Hancock's use of it.

@PhotoAnimationGuy type this in the search engine "Moog Vocoder standard test"
this will give you the variations of the patch bay, hope this helps
