on what authority do you decide that (although still moving) the crab is dead? I don't think that moving parts equals dead but that's just my opinion. After watching several vids on this technique, the most humane way was knocking it out by hitting its head on the edge of the sink or the boat, whichever is closer. Thanks for the post.
my opinion is that you hit too much on the legs, 1 or 2 hits is enough... and maybe its better for u to chop off the tips of the legs for the flavor to get inside ;) although i never see the method you kill the crab but im not like some canadian or american to criticize the way you do it

this is the most humane i have seen so far :) and its true if you take the head off of any animal instintaniouslly it is instant death because the brain is off/dead which means the nerves cannot connect to the brain to experience pain. good job :)

@andresostep I've boiled/steamed crab before. I know the crab senses something not sure if it's pain but when it gets hot in that steamer, they certainly start kicking their legs around a lot.
When I grab all the legs prior to popping off the carapace, the crab is tense. As soon as the carapace is popped off it goes limp - no fight at all. I have no idea what the crab feels and I'm sure none of the other commentators do either...and who cares. We are higher on the food chain.

The ONLY way tohumanely kill a crab you want to leave in one piece to intend to boil and eat, is to lay the crab on its back, lift up the pointed 'flap', insert a screwdriver or sharp knife into the 'hole' or indent in the centre (the heart) and give it a quick hard tap with a hammer or push hard on the knife. Turn it and let it drain. The crab will die within minutes; less painfully than boiling it alive or cutting its head off. .

the most humane way to kill a crab is to tie it up, put some damp paper towels at the bottom of a bowl put the tied crab in the bowl, put a damp cloth over the bowl and leave it in the fridge for 45-60 mins. not enough time freeze it but enough to send it to sleep. the crab is dead at this point so you can then take of the shell. putting a knife or screw driver through the crab just gives it pain.

@optimusmikey you are absolutely correct that the meat will spoil if you don't cook it right away. after i killed it and cracked the shells (to allow the flavor to infuse) i sauteed (immediately after) it in a mixture of butter, white wine, garlic, brown sugar and cayenne pepper. boiling the crab does taste good if you do it in sea water but I prefer it this way. i like cooking the crab once. not boiling and adding flavor on top. cook it once, in the flavor you desire. that's how I do it.

@DonsWinger no thats actually WORSE than what the guys doing.
the most humane way to kill a crab is to tie it up, put some damp paper towels at the bottom of a bowl put the tied crab in the bowl, put a damp cloth over the bowl and leave it in the fridge for 45-60 mins. not enough time freeze it but enough to send it to sleep. the crab is dead at this point so you can then take of the shell. putting a knife or screw driver through the crab just gives it pain.

@tinsanis Yeah it's funny when I almost get pinched...it was a long time since I killed a crab this way and I forgot how to grab it... maybe ill do another video since we've been pulling crabs out the pacific ocean this season like no tomorrow!

The crab still lives for 5 minutes after the head is gone. The crab just can't see but it still goes through a long, exsrusiating pain

LOL... i should have named this video something else - this was not intended to attract all the animal activists. i'm not an activist, I eat meat.
and to the person who said that the crab doesn't taste good this way you are so wrong. the crab meat will start to eat away at itself if you do not cook it right away but the way i do it is most definately better than boiling in water. water is a solvent and in turn, dilutes flavor from everything you cook in it.

@optimusmikey you are absolutely correct that the meat will spoil if you don't cook it right away. after i killed it and cracked the shells (to allow the flavor to infuse) i sauteed (immediately after) it in a mixture of butter, white wine, garlic, brown sugar and cayenne pepper. boiling the crab does taste good if you do it in sea water but I prefer it this way. i like cooking the crab once. not boiling and adding flavor on top. cook it once, in the flavor you desire. that's how I do it.

@mamanettie but the crabs do flick their limbs wildly (just as any other animals would) when they are put on a grill or stabbed with a knife, so it may not be correct if u just read it off wiki.. i have seen lots of false info off wiki.

@ILoveJapan8 yes, in the dawn of man (the cavemen) we were a near starving race but god prevented that from happening by giving us fish, crustatiens, and water so that we would not go extinct early. as an example, in the christian bible is says (revelation 21:6) I am alpha and omega, the beginning and the end, to him who is thirsty i will give to him a drink without cost from the spring waters of life" that has several meanings including the fact that god gave us food and water to survive.

Yeah that isn't the crab's head. What you did was essentially rip the top of it's skull off, leaving it's living brain in tact. Not that crab brains are developed enough to feel complex pain beyond basic survival instincts.
