The Powers That Be took Shawn Lane from us after just 40 years, so that we might spend the next 800 years just to begin to absorb what he left us with in those 40.
shawn was a nice dude. i asked him to get me into his show and he put me on the guest list! i chatted with him afterward and asked to play his guitar and he gave this 'who is this dude' look to his bandmates and they all clamored for my contact info. i can't touch the dude in terms of speed though!
That's one of Shawn's symmetrical stretch-licks. (This one is a "diminished-triad" on each string) He does another one even crazier (although usuallly higher on the neck with more cooperative fret-spacing) in his instructional-video from a long time ago (I think it was Power Lines?) where he plays augmented-triads on each string! He'd often bust that one out whilst "peaking" during an improv-solo!
BTW, that'd be like: 12-16-20 for example! YIKES!
BTW, I can't help but think that the two aforementioned Shawn Lane symmetrical stretch-licks must've been inspired by Eddie Van Halen's "Ice Cream Man" breakdown-licks (at the beginning of the solo) where EVH played a major-triad symmetrically across the strings - IE: 12-16-19
That's pretty crazy too - (although with all due repect to the following artists,) Shawn played these licks at speeds that made "EVH-licks" seem like "Neil Young-licks" - LOL!
@billmeedog Hey! Neil Young is one of my favourite lead players. I think he's one of the most underrated lead players, and would listen to one of his solos over a Van Halen solo any day.
You're probably right, although it would've been a bit more likely that a 14/15-year-old Shawn would've been into Van Halen's first record before he was introduced to Holdsworth's influence, but I could be wrong...
Besides, you're correct that BOTH Shawn and EVH were huge fans of Holdsworth's playing!
Haha heck yeah, what i love the most about it is that in his videos he would say "heres the lick slow" then play it slow... then "heres it medium speed" BAAMMMM!!! And youre like wow, thats medium? No way?? "and heres it up to speed" OH GOD!!!!!!!!!!! Too good to last man... to good to last =(
the first string shape 4-10-4-7 the fingering and shape remains the same but you move it down a string to the a string up a half step which isone fret until you get to the g string then you move the shape up and whole or step 2 frets then a half step from b to e.

Where's this sense in the fingering at the end of the quintuplets? 1 on 9th fret g-string and then 1 on 10 fret lowE, is this correct?

Lick 4 is that sick riff he does like Bucket head but with out tapping ,in key , and all over the fret board at will . Really intense idea!

@billmeedog
I love those diminished and augmented licks
Shawn had serious arthrisis when he recorded these licks and he wasn´t as clean as he was when he recorded Power Licks.
I would have prefered if he would have picked the notes instead of using hammer-ons.

I think they both got that major triad idea from Holdsworth actually.

these tabs are wrong
bitcheznhos 2 years ago
lick 9 has been tabbed incorrectly.
the first string shape 4-10-4-7 the fingering and shape remains the same but you move it down a string to the a string up a half step which isone fret until you get to the g string then you move the shape up and whole or step 2 frets then a half step from b to e.
pretty simple and nice and easy to play.

Great Post!

ITts so true some licks really sound much better fast and the same goes as the opposite. Shawn knew when do do both.
Clean tone, and you can hear him improvising over the exercise and doing ascending and descending. Complete control and understanding.
Despond 2 years ago 2
This is such awesome playing, its cool he kept the tone clean to hear each note clean
