  • I tried this recipe, everyone loved it. I must note that cooking time in recipe was too short. First I used ~1inch dices. I fried it for around 5min in hot olive oil and then I cooked it with water for 10min. after 10min it was still hard inside. I'd say that you need to fry it for at least 5min and cook it for at least 15min under lid with water, that's for 1inch dices.

  • can i use sesame oil instead of olive oil? i dont have olive oil =)

  • I love this! I just ate gamja jorim and it's so great!

  • GOD damn.... love the first side dish so easy and yet so GOOD... 10x alot !

  • omg the song xDDDD

  • @xxdrkanglsxx lmao I know right? The song is basically about stalking! XD

  • can i use honey instead of corn syrup?

  • @efuvan yes you can.

  • Can I use Sweet potato instead? O__O

  • @HighschoollKid yes, you can.

  • hey maangchi i tried this few days ago but mine turned out with too much liquid.. and i followed ur instruction exact same way :( was really really delicious tho..

  • music to d ears when you peel the potatoes :)

  • i love youuuuuuuuuuuu

  • @sasayaki now I understand what you meant by FIGHT xD I watched this an a hour ago and it took some time to prepare and everything, but it was gone in a minute o.O

+ the dishes were empty before I could get my second bite TT^TT

anyways that was an awesome dish & also my first dish that I cooked all by myself

    yay!! ^o^

  • Is gamja jorim the same kind of potato side dish they usually serve at Korean restaurants? They usually put more sauce, though. I have to try this recipe and see if it tastes the same :d

  • 감자 대신 고구마로하면 이상하가요?

  • @ivycasull It will be delicious! Why not!

  • Could you please post a video on how to make Korean potato salad?

  • my mom puts jalapeno peppers and chicken breast pieces(cubed) into the jorim. its really good. you should try once. =D

  • I wanted something quick and simple to cook tonight. Luckily I had all of the needed ingredients of the first potatoe dish except for the corn syrup. I used maple syrup instead, poured in a little bit of ketjap sambal for spice then later added some string beans. And WOW!!!! This was amazing in taste, texture AND in presentation!

I feel bad that the main dish fell short of its side dish. I tried to do a chicken covered in bread crumbs seasoning. Do you have any recommendations with this dish?

  • Nice hair ^ ^

  • what can i substitute with the white oyster mushrooms? and do i have to use it?

  • You are so cute lol!

    K.

  • I am making this over the weekend for my snack for work..I just love these potatoes when I go to the Korean restaurant here in my city

  • Thank you for this recipes!

I didn't know the name of the delicious potatoes side dishes that I love: gamja joriin ♥ =)

  • @titenanasse gamja jorim! Cheers! : )

  • i have a question can we use something else instead of corn syrup ???

  • @butterfltwings Use honey or brown sugar then.

  • @Maangchi thanks i did it was good i loved it ^^

  • i like the way u talk , so cute~~

especially the "thank you for watching my video, bye"

  • instead of sesame oil i used butter it added a differnt more sweet smell and also differnt taste my husband likes it with butter xD

  • watching these videos makes me hungry

  • i made gimjachae tonight but i added julienned carrots and fresh basil from the garden! so good! thanks maangchi

  • @kurabunoyama wow, creative! Basil sounds great!

  • yummm

  • i love your video but can show how to do side dish

  • just wondering, is it supposed to turn out sweet?

i made the first dish and it turned out pretty good, its just that the sweetness overpowered the soy sauce a bit. is that how its supposed to turn out? :O

  • i love your videos!!!!! your soo cute!!! ^^

  • nice cooking!!!

  • for the first potato recipe is it possible to make it spicy by adding red pepper paste with the corn syrup? will it taste yummy? Thanks for posting btw =)

  • @jessegirl428 yeah, I think it will be delicious.

  • u scare me when u chop things up......

  • I loved this video. This gave me some great ideas and you're a very pretty woman!

  • Hi. I tried making this recently, but it turned out very salty. Is the soy sauce just a basic one?

  • @Smirkii12 dark soy sauce that's what I use. Check the ingredient section on my website. I posted the photo of soy sauce there. And if you like to make this dish, plz check the written recipe on my website. More detailed info, tips, and photos are posted. Cheers!

  • @Smirkii12 It's a sweet + salty dish. Skimping on the sugar and corn syrup will likely make the saltiness a bit overwhelming.

  • EASIER VERSION?

WOULD IT WORK IF I JUST PUT SUGAR AND SOY SAUCE? LOL

  • @PoolOfTrolls what I do is just put sugar, soy sauce, a bit of salt, bbq sauce and a liittle bit of ketchup along with just a bit of hot sauce. tastes good to me~

  • Beautiful, and the food doesn't look to bad too ;D

  • when your cutting and peeling your so fast

  • wow...lady in red... gorgeous!!! thnx 4 all the recipes...

  • Hi maangchi, can you give me how to make gamja salad?thanks

  • I so enjoyed your recipes!!!!!

I am on Weight Watchers to lose weight and I can see that these are healthy and should taste great!

Thank you for sharing them w/all of us!

  • will the potato still taste good if i use honey instead of corn syrup?

  • @sherryliao using honey is such a good idea.

  • this is very good and i love ur hair

  • Potatoes are my favorite food. Great to see some great recipes out there! I would gladly use these as my main dishes when cooking.

  • @Robotnik722 I'm glad to hear that!

  • is it ok to skip sesame oil and sugar? also i noticed that u use a lot of sesame oil in your cooking, what kind of flavor does it give, i have never cooked using sesame oil.

  • @meluvu09 In Korean cuisine, sesame oil is very important ingredient. Try it out please. But if you don't like the flavor, skip it. It will still be good without using sesame oil and sugar in this recipe.

  • @meluvu09 It has a smoky, nutty flavour, but can be very strong so you should be careful not to add too much. It's usually added towards the end of the cooking process, because it has a low smoking point.

  • I ALWAYS FIND YOUR RECIPES VERY DELIGHTFUL NOT TO MENTION YOUR CHOICES OF MUSIC AS WELL ADD TO THE FEEL-GOOD FEELING WHILE COOKING! I WISH I WERE RELATED TO YOU! HEHEHE..

  • you have some pretty fast hands! I guess it comes with years of cooking..i'm pretty slow myself haha

  • I LOVE ASIANS!! SO CUTE

  • what kind of soysause do u use?

  • @karcy I like saempyo for soy sauce.

  • y is it so fast

  • Looks good- I'm going to have to try it. One question though-- I've never seen that type of mushroom in my area, is there another type I could use instead?

  • @blondegirlshavefun white oyster mushrooms. Any type of mushrooms could be used.

Check the recipe on my website. I posted the photo of mushrooms there.

  • Hem... seems delicious, I like potato, more vegetable dishes please.. Tq ^^

  • since i come from indian subcontinent, it is amazing that you didn't add any chilli to the dishes.... hahaha... i love to explore other dishes, and i hope to try this one soon :D

  • I would definitely try these dishes, thank you Maangchi!

Question: what could I use to substitute for corn syrup?

I'm not able to find one easily where I live (Japan).

  • yay! Congratulation!

  • There is a restaurant in my town where they serve the first potato dish. Me and my friends would fight over the bowl they gave us because it was so tasty. Now I can make it at home. Yay! Thank you for all the excellent recipes!

  • The first potato dish is my favorite kind of side dish. I didn't expect it to be so easy to make. Now I can make this dish whenever I want. :)

  • I'm glad to hear that!

  • that looks very delicious!! I always wonder, how the korean keep their sidedishes warm....or do you serve them cold? I'm sorry, if that is a dumb question, I've never eaten sidedishes in a restaurant or sth...:S

  • What kind of potatoes? Starchy or waxy?

  • where do u get corn syrup??

  • I buy it at a Korean grocery store.

  • thx so much for recipe!! It was very delicious!!!

More for the futuer!! i will youse your recipe

  • Funny, jamie oliver once did a european version of the first recipe. main difference would be that he use balsamico instead of soysauce and thyme instead of sesam if recall it correctly. Nice work though, i'll try both.^^

  • Jamie Oliver is my favorite TV chef. He is such a talented chef!

  • I saw this recipe you talking about by Jamie Oliver. He baked it in stone oven with pork. It was more Italian dish to me because of balsamic vinegar and thyme. :)))) And it went all black, didnt look very appetising to me. :))))

  • looks good and easy , but do i have to use sesame oil and corn syrup ?! and thank you for the great vid =)

  • Your food looks quite good.

I might try this one weekend when I don't know when to cook.

Your videos are good as well.

I wish you luck on upcoming videos.

I think you'll be really good on FoodNetwork.

kamsamida for posting... more power to you!!!

  • Thank you!!

  • tnx for posting!!!!!!

  • THis is my favorite korean side dish! Thanks for posting this^^

  • I'm going to try Korean food tomorrow, for the first time. I'm going to order japchae and bibimbap hehe.

  • Good choice! let me know how you like it.

  • Hi, Maanchi! I just wonder why you add galic in the middle of your cooking? Any special reason for it? For Chinese, we use galic after adding oil but you do in a different way, so quite curious. Also, why you added corn syrup for the first dish? Not easy to buy corn syrup, so is there other thing that I can use to replace it? BTW, love your cooking video and really helpful indeed.

  • Hmmm, you make me think why I put garlic later. : ) I don't have any particular rule o f cooking.

Maybe I don't want to burn garlic too much because it would take some time to cook the potato cubes? Corn syrup makes the potato sweet and shiny. If corn syrup is not available, use sugar.

Thank you! Read the written recipe and tips on my website if you want to cook this.

  • Tks for your reply and good to know the reason of using corn syrup too. Much appreciated.

  • Im making the first potato dish with kimchi (ive already made that 2 days ago) today for a podluck dinner with my Indian friends. Nice way to introduce Korean food even though Im not Korean..hehehe.....wish me luck!!!

  • yayee,my fingers are crossed! Let me know how it turns out.

  • It was a BLASTTTTT I tell you...evryone loved it especially this German lady who kept serving herself the Gamja Jorim.......Kimchi was also a great celebration...but they found it a little spicy ( because I used Indian chilli powder which is 100 x much hotter than Korean chilli powder...lol)

loved it......making it for lunch again today!!!!! I can use it for picnics too

    thanks MAANGCHI

  • haha, Indiean chili powder is much hotter than Korean hot pepper flakes? I did not know! Thank you for your update!

  • beautiful dishes!...and so is the cook!

  • beautiful lady, cute accent, I hear some excellently pronounced english words with a PERFECT english accent slipping through from time to time. Are you holding back ehh?

  • hii:)

tnx for the recipe..I was just wonder if you can use any other kind of mushroom lol like the ones from the store cause idk what those kind are

  • of course you can use different types of mushrooms.

  • thanks for sharing... by the way do you know how to make any soup with potato?

  • yes, I use it doenjang guk (vegetable soup with soybean paste). I will post the recipe someday, thank you!

  • Maangchi ! Haha , I`m a Filipino but I swear I love your videos ! :)) LOL , Nice hair , by the way :D Keep It Up ! And make more great vids :D

  • number 1 thing i love about all your cooking techniques is that you uses ounion and garlics alot. i believe those are the ingredients for a good dish.

  • do we have to add corn syrup?

  • you always have good song on your videos=) i never expected the ramones from you =)

  • Thank you! : )

  • Maangchi, you are amazing! Thank you for your wonderful videos! I often get a side dish at restaurants that is translucent and cut in rectangles similar to tofu, but it has a solid gelatin consistency, and is served in kimchi paste. I can't figure out what it is! Ideas?

  • It must be either acorn jelly (called "dotorimook") or mungbean jelly (called "chungpomook"). The sauce is not kimchi paste. I will post the recipes for mook someday in the future. Thank you!

  • im so happy that you posted this! i love the first one and they never serve it at resturaunts :( thanks for posting!

  • Ahn yong ha seh yo,

My mother is Korean (from Chung Nam), and cuts her vegetables the same way. Scary fast! She uses the same huge 10" chef knife for EVERYTHING, even peeling apples. Thank you for posting your videos. When ever I ask my uma how to make something, she just tells me to watch her. I'm kind of pyong shin because I need exact measurements. She says just a pinch here, a palm full of this, splash of that. I'm making a few dishes for Mother's Day. Wish me luck!

  • lol, I was exactly like your mom before posting my recipes. I sometimes peel apples with my big kitchen knife even though I have a knife for fruit. : )

Good luck with your cooking for your mother!

  • omg i feel the same way

i dont get what my mom means about pinch.. and dash and "needed amount" it drives me nuts trying to measure up...

  • lol

  • awesome video and recipe! i love how its easy to make :)

  • gamja jorim was what i ate in the restaurant....(i think)

    it was kind of sweet....

    (is it?)

    more power!!!

  • yummy!

  • I guess gamja is potatoes, right? ;)

  • That's right! : )

  • Yeah I guess thats why she was peeling potatoes...or were they for throwing in the bin LOL

  • I love your instruction and your technique. You are an excellent teacher and chef.

  • wow, you are a good cook!

  • Good for breakfast!

  • Maangchi I want to try the first recipe cause it looks like one of the ban chans you'd get at a korean restaurant. But we don't have corn syrup at home. Would it taste okay w/o corn syrup?

  • yes, it will be ok without corn syrup. Use a little bit of brown sugar.

  • I wonder, is corn syrup a usual ingredient in Korean cooking? Can I get it in Korean market? Cos this is my first time heard about corn syrup. thanks..

  • hi, check my website please. You will get all information about corn syrup. Click ingredient section there.

  • thanks

  • is there a side dish where you just put soy sauce and brown suger on the potatoes and leave them over night?

  • Can you show us how to make the side dish that taste like fish cake ... It's Sweet i eat it all the time when i go for korean cusine, I'm just in love with it but have no idea how to make it. The sauce is Orange color, it's sweet and either it's "Fish" or it's Something that taste REALLY GOOD!!!

  • It's fish case side dish. You can stir fry it first and add some hot pepper paste, garlic, a little bit of soy sauce. Anyway, I will include it in the list of my upcoming recipes.

I was wondering if you had a recipe for "gahn poong gee" the korean/chinese spicy chicken..I assume you have made it cause it seems very similar to your dak kang jung recipe. I was also wondering if you have made the mashed potato salad banchan? it goes really good with "teh jee bulgogi" and other spicy korean food. Keep up the good food!

  • keep checking my site, I will post the recipes you mention someday in the future. Thank you!

  • I have cooked "gamja jorim" and "gamja chae bokkeum." I subsituded the 'corn syrup' with sweet mirin. Thanks for the recipe, Maangchi! :D

But....i say no way! lol lol lol I don't need the problems that they were creating for me. So now.....i have decided to say single (which i been single for about almost 2 yrs. now).
