  • Some Part of Me felt that just maybe the creator maybe making fun of us for thinking too much into this and that he made us go through all that hardwork just to see give us a kick in the face because in the end it doesn't even matter maybe maybe maybe.

  • BEATRIIIIIIIICE!!!

  • @bladecat4 I'm aware of that, smartass. The game ends differently than the Greek tale, however. Draw your own conclusions on what the story/game mean to you.

  • this game is soooooo much fun! I finished it twice. :3

  • were can i find the soundtrack to this!?

  • This is the game Limbo wish it could have been.

  • @soulofshiver I was just thinking that lol!

  • ...... grrrr ugh did someone know who made the instrument cover who favorite that vid the dont look back instrumental cover

  • what's the song?

  • I love how much the music skips implying how many times you died.

  • 12 people looked back

  • great game. it was pretty easy but really good.

  • @boethiah12 So easy that you are looking at its walkthrough?

  • @ksmxx i like watching lets plays after i beat games and this was the closest to a lets play i could find.

  • @boethiah12 DeceasedCrab has posted a Let's Play of this game. Only difference is that he changed the music.

  • I just beat this about five minutes ago and was left silent at the ending.

  • after starting this game and reading the comments I HAD to see the end and all i can say is ................MIND BLOWN!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is absolutely beautiful. Truly thought provoking. The way I see it... It was all part of Hades deal. Orpheus agreed to never look back until he was out of the cave. Once he was, he looked at Eurydice and Hades reunited them... But through death. After all, Hades was the god of death in Greek mythology... So wouldn't you expect a darker ending anyways?

  • lol yhis game is werid but cool

  • thank you for bringing us this amazing game with the real music.

  • OMG. I absolutely C A N N O T get through the part with the giant demon thing and the spiders and bats... please help me out lmao. (this is the one right before he finds the ghost)

  • @MsEmmiHart the trick is to always stay on one of the two blocks ... jump up down up down and try hitting every time

  • it reminds me of scott pilgrim

the giant fireball shooting guy is mathew patel and the jumping guys are his deamon hipster chicks

  • Weird game.....But I loved it!

  • I braced myself for the gasp when they neared the other him, but it didn't for a few seconds so I leaned closer to see what was wrong. Then the GASP was right in my ears.

  • That ending is breathtaking (and it also kinda freaked me out with the GASP sound). At first I thought it meant the guy was dead...standing up, though one of the comments explained it better. It's a twist from the old myth. You bring back the ghost, you don't have to be stuck in Hade's cruel cycle. You move on.

  • man those song are perfect...

  • I want to play more games like this.

  • @Churroization I found 10 games kinda of like this, if you want the links, just let me know!

  • @GinaLadiee Definately would love those links! :)

  • @GinaLadiee can you send me the links to the similar games you've found?

  • @GinaLadiee I´d be very interested in the links.. If you could...

    Thanks a lot :)

  • u were right i did look back before i subscribed but still i won before this

  • .....woah.

  • i liked the ending part i got confused because there was 2 guys when they where on the grave but i get it now hes retarded!lol!

  • at the end when the ghost follows you, and if you look at it, the sound it makes is the same sound the second boss in The House of the Dead 2 makes when you shoot it, just saying......

  • gun > hades

  • the end game of it is heart moveing your life long love is gone you go through hell to find her and when you do you musnt look back after that one glance or else you will never see her again and in the end you see yourself and fade away into darkness of hells fateful cycle as you start your journy again -azure the prophet-
  • Eu cheguei até o final!!

    LOL

  • My favourite flash game ever made. I've never had a simple game like this evoke emotion in this way before. Fucking brilliant.

  • @Soundboy6 Have you played The Company of Myself? Also a brilliant flash game with great music that evokes emotion. I really recommend that you play that game. It's available at Adult Swim games.

  • @Soundboy6 Completely agreed, when I first played the game and it ended, I was actually stunned for a few minutes. It's amazing

  • thank you for this wonderful video, you obviously appreciate the art unlike the rest of those horrible "let's play" morons, thank you again =]

  • @CYI3ERPUNK Agreed.

  • TRADGEDY BLURBLRLRLBLRBLR

     Sorry.

  • I thought I beat the game wrong when I disappeared at the end but I guess I didn't ... What was the point of the ending, I'm so confused!

  • @XxGonixXFAN By escaping the underworld by not 'looking back,' this is a symbolic act of the character moving forward with his life without the burden of regret at the loss of his companion.

This is why they disappear at the end -- the character's internal struggle is finished. It is a fantastic metaphor for the struggle everyone faces when they deal with the loss of a loved one.

  • @excalibration No, it's a retelling of a Greek story.

  • i believe its teaching to live in the present. this man has wasted his entire life dwelling on the past and he has in turn squandered his existence trying to take back what he has no power over

  • why is that so depressing?!?! must be that dammed music.. get it.. damned?.. oh forget it

  • My interpretation of the game (which i have just replayed) is this:

The female is dead and the man is in mourning. He travels to the underworld (hell if you prefer) and retrieves her after besting both Cerberus, the hellhound, and Hades himself. He takes the spirit of his lost love and travels back to the overworld, back to the point the game starts at. Once there, he sees a figure at the tombstone. A friend? A fellow mourner?

No, it is himself. He had died of grief. You played as his spirit.

  • thx for telling i was clueless what happned

  • @GolemofMeat I think the idea is that all the journey through the underworld was just in his imagination, he wishes to take her back... and obviously he can't.

  • @GolemofMeat Wait! but the man at the grave IS the player So how can he have died standing there?

  • I can't get past 4:02!

  • thats just a sad ending :[ all that work for nothing. + it dosn't make any sence. did he go back in time to save the "she" or did a friend just showed up??

  • Ok so no one looks back and they still end up sublimating?

  • Tasselfoot, thank god you're here.

  • cool its like an 8 bit version of dantes inferno

  • my friends and i call this game "too many drugs" cuz the guy who made this was crazy high

  • I was so pissed when i "beat" this game.

  • "evaporate", no. When they make it back to reality, they are destroyed by the very fact that she's dead and he's mourning.

  • This game proves you don't need fancy graphics or elaborate storylines. The music helps, but you can still watch it without the music. This is pure storytelling. Tragic, but awesome.

  • the only way to win this game is by not looking back (as you do to start the adventure). this is to say, don't try to retrieve the dead girl. just accept that she's gone. because even after all that work, you can never win her back again.

  • oh i get it! he got her out thinking shed be alive. but they were both dead when he went into the underworld!!

  • When i first played this game i was like this is trash so I looked for a walkthrough to see what the point was...now this is a beautiful game to me

  • DUDE!!!!!! YOU CAN'T EDIT THE DEATHS BECAUSE THAT MESSES WITH THE TRULY EPIC MUSIC IN THE GAME!!!!!! DON'T MESS WITH THE TUNES!!!!!!!

  • i lke this game

  • i hate this game im glad i didnt finish it

  • screw you then.

  • it would scare me when i looked at the ghost

  • finally finished this after a couple of horrible hours :(

  • Do it for the epic music then.

  • so sad ending

  • this game is about vietnam.

  • I beat this game today but I've died like crazy , the thing that was the most dificult part for me was playing the whole game with the keyboards , as u can see Im not a computer-gamer-nerd , I been dealing with consoles since when atari was around , too bad this game was around like 25 years ago .

Technically it could be possible with exception of the music of course , but graphically speaking it could be done , dont y'all agree ?

  • I really, really wanna know where the music is from all I know is its from 2 indie games..

  • I hate the boss!

  • it is... but HARD!

  • I'd love to see a flawless walktrhough of this, but I'm guessing simply editing out the deaths would be an easier job than actually beating the game without dying.

  • Gun > Satan

  • too bad u didnt edit out the deaths

  • I think the "Don't Look Back" part of the game might also mean that he is always figuratively looking back by mourning his wife.

In short, the game is all like GET OVER IT DUDE, STOP LOOKING BACK.

  • I beat this game a few minutes ago.

  • fun game.

  • what if he did a backflip to face her? does that count as 'looking back'? lol

  • I've played this before but can someone plz explain the story for me? The ending too........

  • Do you know the story of Orpheus and Eurydice?

    This is similar to it.

  • yeah, in my country, i studied classics, and i think that this game it is about the myth.Orpheus can bring her wife with a condition, have no doubt, never look back.He descends to the hell and bring Eurydice but, when he is reaching the end, he look back and Eurydice return hell

  • @animeotaku307 Huh?

  • Orpheus was a skilled minstrel who was to marry Eurydice when she suddenly died. So he traveled into the underworld and convinced Hades with his music to let her go. Hades agreed on the condition that Orpheus could never look at Eurydice-who would follow behind him-until he was out of the underworld.

Orpheus and Eurydice began their travel above, but Orpheus began to fear that he was tricked. So when they were close, he looked behind him and saw his love before she returned to the underworld.

  • thats pretty fking sad

  • @animeotaku307 so, then he evaporated?

  • @animeotaku307 you're wrong about the ending. he looked back when he was out of the cave, but Eurydice wasn't. he failed to realize that part of Hades deal. someone else has probably already said this, but oh well.

  • @ahmeadows There's more than one version to many of the Greek myths including this one. What you just said is one of those variations you heard while the one I said was the one I heard.

  • @animeotaku307 Couldn't they have just kept talking so he would know if she was there :S

  • @PivotMario Probably, but this is supposed to be tragic. It would be too easy if they talked.

  • @PivotMario In the myth of Orpheus, she is still dead until she reaches the upper world.

  • I know Im replying to a month old comment, but the man in the story lost his wife. So he ventures into the underworld to save her soul and bring her back to life. I dont get the ending either, though. Sorry.

  • @DMSwordsmaster

The ending means it was all a fantasy the man is having while staring at the grave. He never actually goes to the underworld, the game itself is just him imaging if he could get back his love/bride/what-have-you. That the player character gets blown into sprinkly bits along with her at the end would imply that his soul, too, is destroyed for having lost her. Aw.

  • @Ghedji Damn... That's sad... :-(

  • thank you. that clarifies it so much. I thought he was dead too or some dumb thing like that.

  • Is it sad that I only understand the title of this game from reading Sandman? :o

  • the music made me cry! ç__ç Very sad!

  • that ending confused me O_o

  • What an ending.

  • @pvtred Definitely drives the point home. Don't look back.

  • I still don't totally get the VERY end. if somebody has some pointers on what it means, i'm open to suggestions.

  • People actually need a walkthrough for this game? The title pretty much sums it up.

  • I will definitely say that the premise of the game was top notch, I think its based on the Greek myth of Orpheus. (look it up) Every single person that has talked about it has said it was "challenging" and thats just a massive understatement. "Punishing" would be more accurate. The author of this video edited out all the deaths but there were ALOT that you didnt see. Also, the controls were horrible, incredibly sticky and frustrating, and the whole thing was hurt by Kongregate's stupid... (cont)

  • (cont) ... Kongregate's stupid chat sidebar thing, which caused the game to lag horribly and seriously screw with the platforming. I actually heard of it through the Escapist's Alt+Escape, which gave it points for the ideology, which is definitely the best part. Play the game, but expect it to be extremely frustrating.

  • so it was all in his mind and the main guy keeps imagining what would have happened if he really didnt look up.

  • Love the sound effects :P.

  • it was all in his head and this is based on a depresing myth about this guy named orpheus and he went to hell to get his dead wife and he played music and everyone changed there feeling except for hades but he said get out of domain and ill give you your wife but if you look back she will be gone forever he got out but he looked back he saw some of his wife but then dissapered a sad myth oh and he played music and nymphs killed him i think

  • Note how in EVERY greek myth, the hero f*cks up at the end and causes someone to die.

Like the one with the minotaur, HANG UP THE WHITE SAIL "Lol no i wont" OKAY I WILL KILL MYSELF "whoops lol"

  • The idea being that children who hear these stories will be less likely to make the same mistake. Or perhaps think they should make the mistake on purpose to be cool like their idol...

  • I see it as the first man looking back right before they arrive ... it would have made more sense if, in the beginning intro movie, there was a flicker that the PC faced. Then it would be foreshadowed more ...

  • You went through all that work just to find yourself and your wifes spirit dissapear? well thats gotta be a slap in the face. but seriously, it is a good game.

  • yea man this game is pro high five for dont look back

  • Your name and namesake are legendary...

  • The End is the best omg xD

  • this game is great i love it i finished it 3 times and it is still interesting. tasselfoot thanks for upload

  • you died 2 times

  • WOW,i played this game a while ago and i only did it until that Dog/tiger fight.

  • same here :D

  • So what's this about again? I mean the plot itself

  • this is based on the myth of orpheas about a musician who went to hell to retrieve his wife conquering ceberus and hades with music but he looks back before the surface and his wife vanishes

the dog represents ceberus and the behemoth is hades the part where platforms fall out from out for you over water is crossing the river styx i think it would be better if you fought charon on a boat though

  • But who was the guy at the very end when you and the wife's spirit disappear?

  • YOURSELF.

  • So there's two of you?

  • well,I THINK its yourself...but as i sayed before...is a MYTH...it maybe means something else.

  • >>GearHawkAccel

The ending is open to interpretation.

One interpretation is that it's not really possible to bring people back from the dead, and the whole game was the main character's fantasy or dream. When they return to the grave, the main character is still there and the fantasy ("fake" main character with the girl) dissolves.

  • The Dog Is called "Cerberus",the three-headed dog, guardian of the Dark World

PS:if i am wrong u can search for Cerberus on internet

  • It is the ceberus. This game is based of a mythological story of the same idea. A guy goes into the underworld to get his dead girlfriend. However the end is different. In the myth the guy was right at the end of his way back and he was out but his girlfriend wasn't he looked back and she vanished. I think he wound up killing himself after that but I'm not sure. It's the same idea though. He didn't have to fight Hades though.

  • *looks back* ...f#@k

  • en wikipedia org /wiki/Orfeo_ed_Euridice#Synopsis

but I still don't get the ending with the other dude on the grave.

  • you need to think for a while if you didn't get the games meaning

  • This game was based off A Greek Myth with Hades and Morpheus, so yeah, the big scary dude is hades, but you'd imagine a god to be invincible.

  • and is the big scary dood the Hades charaater

  • umm is the dog supposed to be the 3 headed dog from "Hell"?

  • LOVE this sad song...some1 no the name?

  • my personal interpretation at the end is that its supposed to be a continous cycle...

meaning that 1st self tried to save de spirit girl and almost succeeded..and then back-in-time self "looked back" and we both were wisped away..problem is that he didnt look away...

    so maybe im wrong

  • i remember this story...its about a man named Orpheaus or somthing and he tells Hades to bring em back...and the catch is to not look back or it dont count...so he brought he back by singing o somthing but at the end of the story he looks back

  • My interpretecion of the end:

when a close person die, is imposible bring come back but part of you are gone with her.

    sorry for my english

  • Damn I just found&played this game and then checked for videos... this is so fucking great

  • aaargghh i can't do this game!!

  • i hated the darkness

  • Thanks for explaining the end. I didnt understand the end too, but now it gets sense.

  • the ending is creepy

  • When the game started, the woman died, and the man's spirit tried to go back and save the woman.

Based on Roman Mythology, the man was heading into Hades's lair, to retrieve the woman's soul. In Roman stories, if you EVER looked back, you will be trapped forever in the Underworld.

At the end, the man realized he had not left, and "looked back" time, before he set off.

  • Its the tale of Orpheus. You only partcialy correct. His wife dies and Orpheus convinced Hades and his wife to have a chance to bring her soul back. The condiction was if he looked back her soul would be forever lost to him. In the end he made it out then made the error to look back befroe his wife sould had left and his efforts were all in vain. A sad story nice put into a game here and in other places.

(Persona 3 making people more intersted in Greek Myths since 2007)

  • I was actually guessing the ending, but I don't really get how BOTH of them were sent back.

  • I'll admit that I don't know why both were sent back.. Only the creater would know the full answer for that. Then again maybe you idea may be correct.

Concidering that this is just a game it a moot point to think so much into this.

  • i don't get the ending

  • Hard Game...

  • would have been cool if you showed what happens when you look back...

  • You vanish or something

  • the ghost thing vanishes

  • lol first boss is from 300 ☻/

    /▌

    / \

  • Has anybody beaten this game without dying once? It's pretty hard... but I wonder if there's an alt. ending.

  • im pretty sure Orpheus had a gun when he went to save his wife...

  • plz accept my video response.

  • What happens when you look back? what just happened at the end? Why did they disappear? Please!

  • Music awesome!!..if anyone can tell me the name of the music or at least the name of some similar?... Excelent Game, i played a while ago and is very good ..
