  • Hey Flesh, may I ask how long it took for all of that corraline algae to grow? I've had my LR in my aquarium for nearly a year now and it's showing only light traces of CA.

  • @xRage91 Not long at all. But honestly most of the coraline is on the glass. My rocks are covered with a very fine "red turf algae" or that is what several other people have called it. Wish my tangs ate it. I probably had complete coverage (what you see now) in about a year.

  • Tanks looking great Flesh, did you used any addictives to make your coraline algae grow?

  • @Italianboy196 Nope, just bi weekly h2o changes of 25 gallons. I use Instant Ocean Reef Crystals

  • @kingfisherfleshy

Sounds good, do you use any additives for your corals? I'm ask this because a few months ago I purchased about $300 worth of chemicals from kent marine, waiting to be used lol hopefully wasn;t a waste.

  • @Italianboy196 No - I use no supplements. As of right now (as far as I can tell) I have no issues maintaining proper parameters. That being said, I have a three part dosing kit that is going to be put into action as soon as I get an alk and mag test kit from salifert.

  • Sweet man, You might want to get a Lawnmower Blenny, he will eat that green hair algae like there is no tomorrow.

  • @dannyloskipapi Hey man, I do have that starry blenny in there. I also have a bristlemouth tang in the chevron - technically speaking via gut analysis of tang genera, cteno's should be eating more micro algaes than any of the others...we will see that chev is still getting settled. Taking pellets, reef food, and algae like a pig though.

  • @kingfisherfleshy Ahh true true about the Tangs, I just know that in my 30g my blenny destroyed the algae that I had after the cycle, now he just eats the food I give to my Clowns and Damsels. Still pecks at the rocks and glass sometimes.

  • @dannyloskipapi Yea, its strange because I am a vodka doser. I also have that macro algae growing in tank. So now in the last week this hair algae shows up. Im running some nitrate tests this weekend before my h2o change, but I bet they will read zero no matter what. Im always telling people that the issue behind nuisance algae is h2o quality, and not what you have eating it, so I should probably follow my own advice haha.

  • @kingfisherfleshy Haha I suppose so. But yeah Im having a little bit of trouble with some diatoms and I think is the water Ive been using for my changes, probably have some silicates in it. So Im probably gonna be buying a Ro/Di system in the next few weeks. But my corals seem great and my fish as well. Part of the hobby I guess.

  • @dannyloskipapi same here - wish you could have seen the tank a week ago, the sand bed was glowing.

    Then I lost my GFO.

Running GFO in a reactor has been nothing but a pain, so I am thinking of going back to just buying a can of chemipure every month. Way more expensive, but the water does look great.

I use tap on this tank, and my water params are great. That being said, there are silicates which manifest themselves in the form of diatoms.

  • @kingfisherfleshy Yeah that would deff mess with your phosphates.

I use this filtered water machine at my local walmart, and its pretty good my water params are great as well, but these damn diatoms won't go away. I also tested for phosphates and they were "zero". But you never know. I also do a one gallon water change every other day with Red Sea Pro salt. The Best btw!

  • @dannyloskipapi dont really have an issue with phosphates from my well. GFO will also assist you in controlling those diatoms, which is why I use it.
