just make a isometric viewer (ex stonesense) then make sprites that can stick up out of the ground (basically it looks like minecraft) after that make slopes, then add parameters so that the generator makes the ground look slightly noisy, of course the ploygon modeling is needed. it would be hard to program, but it would look pretty cool if you added more plants like grass.

@bravocmdr there is a program that lets you view your fort in 3d, and one that gives you an isometric view (like the old Roller Coaster and Zoo Tycoon games). DF can be run in conjunction with these, but you still need the 2d mode to give orders and such.

For example, the Crysis series became famous because of the overwhelming 3D graphics, but it still wasn't an extremely popular game (Although it still is pretty popular)
