  • I think I have scoliosis of the fingers...

  • hahahaha i like how he gets all buffer as the years goes by

  • I believe the Mark V doesn't have any effects in. What if i want to buy a Mark V but I would like to have some good delay and reverb sounds with it ? Could any of you guys tell me what effect gear is good to go with the mark V ?

  • @JeuneGen I highly recommend TC Electronics effects processors. Specifically the G-System. The TC Electronics G-System will give you complete control over your rig and any other pedals you may want to integrate without changing the core of your amps sound. It also handles the switching for you of the channels (you may need an amp gizmo to interface with the Mark V to change amp channels, not sure because I own a Dual Rectifier 3-channel model and it does). Hope this helps

  • @jonathanadamwatson Nah, I switch my channels on my Mark V with the G-System and have no issues :).

  • What is the opening song to this video???

  • this guy has had a pretty good work out

  • Does anyone actually watch videos like this for what he says as opposed to the playing?

  • @IMakeVideosYouWatch I do. You never know what you might learn seeing as everybody thinks and plays differently.

  • @IMakeVideosYouWatch Yes. I'm not looking for playing, I'm looking for tone when I look at these kinds of videos.

  • @BangLikeABassist Don't think he engages the piezo for the clean electric sound. It's the top switch on his guitar...as far as i know it should be flicked upwatds for the piezo. I think there is a seperate jack as well for the piezo to go into an acoustic amp or whatever?!

  • I still can't get over how tiny the headstock is on EBMM guitars.

  • around 54 Sec., anyone else hear that?

    Trolol

  • I bet he could kick your ass!

  • Whats the song at first

  • @bebo7002 Hollow years

  • My uncle went to see Dream Theater during their Images and Words tour and got an autograph from JP and JM! But he lost the John Petrucci autograph.... T_T

  • Also consider that he gets his clean sound from the piezo in that guitar, which i can say is just a miracle worker for clean, my friend has john's signature model and it'll make most amps sound like an acoustic is playing

  • second riff he played reminded me of Lamb of God Riffs!

  • amazing

  • i just came here to brag about me taking an elevator with this guy today, had a talk with john he's real nice, and im going to the show tonight, im stoked.

  • @zombieslovebacon Haha nice, dude! How was the show?

  • What style (recto, stiletto, roadking) of cabinet is being used in the demo?

  • @TheMetalerEricM Recto 4x12 Traditional cab

  • this video is tearing me towards getting the Mark V instead of the hughes and kettner coreblade...

  • His face at 9:58 is like "what did i just do to these people?"

  • i have always discredited this guitarist because of his solos, and that (imo) sounded too processed.

Buying an amp and looking into the mark fives, i have now realized how articulate john really is.

Very impressed with his approach to sound and his knowledge of what gear does, and consequentially disappointed with my ignorance.

    Onto the library now.

  • I have an immaculate Mark IIC "i". Yes "i". No eq with reverb.

I tell you my amp will never ever get the "+" and sounds

absolutely fantastic. Punchy, Articulate, Clean, Searing Leads,

Liquid Sustain, Crisp, Fast, etc. I have tried the "V". I am

not fooled that handwiring is the same as circuit boards.

I also know that once a recipie is perfected, leave it alone.

The new amp sounds dry. The best MB amps and this will go down in history are the Mark IIC,"i"s, or "+" with no eq.

  • where's the Mark 4 C+? lol

  • Okay what is the name of that lead he plays right at the end? I know it's on his solo from Once in a Livetime but where is the actual from?! Thanks!

  • 6:50 CRUNCH mode, he said... :D

  • awesome clean tone

  • i thought his name was onn his amp..

  • the adjectives he uses to describe the sound are just great.

  • Does that amp hes using have 6l6 or el34 ?

  • Lol i like the amp to roar.....

  • Which pickup is selected??

  • Hermoso..

  • At the beggining of the video, it shows a quick timeline in how Petrucci became jesus.

  • wish u all the best

  • This video is awesome...too bad I can't afford a Mark V in college, otherwise I'd instantly be dialing in these tones NOW hahaha

  • 5 deafed people!

  • can i put a combo on top of a cabinet?

  • can i put a combo on top of a cabinet?

  • the mark one mode he has sound like andy timmons- probably because the lonestar is a hot rodded mark one

  • Hi! I'm John Petrucci. I just set my Mark V to Embarassthehellouttayou Mode and let er rip!

  • @brosefsmith lol true xD

  • @brosefsmith or even: "Bringtheshitouttayou" mode MarkV...

  • But Petrucci doesn't use Lonestar for clean sound???

  • What song is that at 6:50?

  • I"ll have to say that the tones do sound pretty tastey!!

  • anyone else like their clean tone "scoopy" ? LOL!! johns great!

  • what would be the best cab for this amp head

  • If you want directly ear this amp.

    3:28 Hollow Years - Clean

    6:49 Rhythm - Channel 2

    9:29 Lead - Channel 2

  • what a cool guy, John Petrucci

  • Those pics at the start make me so jealous

  • 2:51 If he actually did that on front of YOUR face, it'd melt.

  • it would be nice if he explained his philosophy on the setting of the back of the amp! so many variables !

  • Once the clooooud thaaats raining... over your head ya!

  • thumbs up if you sang along to hollow years

  • When Petrucci plays Hollow Years, the captions say "meaning". I knew DT was the meaning... of life?

  • How about a proper Mark V review covering all aspects of it?

  • lol sounds like lamb of god at 6:50

  • that clean tone isnt fair. petrucci has a piezo on.

  • @UncleJoey12 The master volume thing is a good tip for getting a good tone out of any amp ever. I've never found an amp that sounded great with the MV low--acceptable, sure, even pretty okay, but never great.

  • wut speaker is that?

  • Whats the song played at the intro! its ace

  • i wish he'd play more jazz stuff, he's extremely good at it

  • i want to sell my 1994 mark iv for v

  • i like it...

  • I LIKE IT.....

  • I LIKE IT.....

  • What an Awesome HEad!:D

  • 4 guys realized they'll never afford this amp.

  • I don't know.I am sure the MVKicks Major ass, and not too many amps can have that much body. I noticed with my setup(Mesa QUAD PRE into 295 Simulclass and RECTO 4 x 12)that I do not have to use the amount of gain that JP is using here. I can infinte sustain with the main volume up, and any sound from any of Metallicas albums. Although I play mainly Southern rock now, I use the MK IIc+ channel which with gain down sounds like Dickey Betts Gary Moore type Tone. Mesa Boogie is the Best IMO.

  • I wonder how the MESA QUAD and Simulclass 295 into a 4 x 12 RECTO cabinet would fair. I always love the tone with my setup.

  • hi guyss i need help. does anyone know the name of this head??

i know it's a mark v but i can't find it with this deep red colour!

does it have any code name?? like bk or something!

    thanx! :)

  • hi guyss i need help. does anyone know the name of this head??

i know it's a mark v but i can't find it with this deep purple - bloodish colour!

does it have any code name?? like bk or something!

    thanx! :)

  • I have a Mark 5 combo and John and Mesa can take their recommended settings and keep them. And John can keep his style of playing as well. I want my own thank you. If more players spent their time playing and pursuing their own sound and style we wouldn't have to listen to so much crap that is out there. PS...this is an incredible sounding amp.

  • is that just a rectifier 4x12 cabinet?

  • "Tight Spanky" Hilarious!

  • thumbs up if you wish you could afford a mesa boogie!

  • He could at least reveal how he has some overdrive pedals in his rig to push these amps even harder...

  • i've heard the opening song before, in the young guitar lesson i guess, anyone knows what is the song?

  • @baskara88 Hey! what's the title of the song in the opening? Can you tell me what is that? Pls. I like it now...

  • @baskara88 What's the title of the song at the opening?

  • @baskara88 it's a song called 'suspended animation' from his 2005 solo album

  • @baskara88 "Animate Inanimate."

  • @baskara88 Animate Inanimate from his solo album, suspended animation

  • I want tabs for the Hollow Years he played. He includes the bass notes which sounds very good

  • @lpdark32

go to UG and look up Hollow Years the live version

  • @ 9:29 rock discipline lick lol

  • what is the name of the riff at 6:50 and the solo at 9:30 ?

  • @Schecter725 its probably some of the new material he's working on.

  • @Schecter725 9:30 is from a piece called Gemini, great bit of music.

  • @hmm2112 i really can't find this song...who is the artist?

  • Which one controls the sun?

  • What song is he playing at 9:30 on the Mark I mode?

  • Anyone knows what's the riff at 6:50 ?

  • "I like it fat n bold" kind of what hes become

  • As usual : Mesa Boogie + John Petrucci = relevant video to teach how to shape sound both john's sound but also our own sound. Thank you so much John for such generosity with fans.

  • The video started, and I thought he was going to say "I am your GAAAAWWWWD!" like the parody videos... X-D

  • @bloodySunday77 "hey kids I'm to melt your fuckin face off!" LOL

  • Hollow years is my favourite song! I always wanted to know the way he played it, I'm so happy! thanks for uploading!!

  • That '05 picture looks nothing like him. God, he was so un-beefy, and had short hair, and a clean shaven face.

  • How nice of John to how us his settings, other big names like Hetfield (although I do like him) are always so secretive about giving out settings, like its really going to make some of us basement players suddenly become phenoms just because of tone.

  • I've got myself one of these and thats it no more searching for tone. Mesa Boogie are the best if thats not to a narrow minded thing to say. I've still got a lot of learning to do regarding getting different sounds as there is so much available here. In a few words though.. WHAT AN AMAZING AMPLIFIER!!! Also great to watch J.P demonstrate and discuss.. An awesome guy!!

  • What's the name of the song in the intro??? Is it DT? I just searched through all albums but couldn't find it >.<

  • @Tanax13 Animate-Inanimate from his solo album Suspended Animation...

  • @Tanax13 Its the song 'Animate-Inanimate', from John Petrucci's solo album 'Suspended Animation'. Check it out its bloody awsome.

  • @SASPython Hahah! The only album I didn't check. Checked ALL Dream Theater albums aswell as both LTE albums :P Ahwell, cheers a lot for the title and the album :D

  • @Tanax13 no problem man! haha if only i had told you before you went through all that trouble xD

  • @SASPython Haha it's okay! ;D I mean, it was DT and LTE.. it's not like boring stuff to go through ;)) Also I noticed some pretty awesome songs I hadn't listened to before like Kindred Spirits and Acid Rain :D

  • @Tanax13 animate inanimate from his solo album

  • @Tanax13

It's Animate Inanimate, the 8th song from JP's solo album "Suspended Animation"

  • that mark I sound is awesome kind of like Carlos Santanas sound

  • ok my question is was that clean tone one his humbucker pick up or the piezo?

  • @PositivelyInsane He's using the humbuckers in split coil mode. The bottom switch is in the middle position(coil split) and the top switch is in the bottom position which means the piezo is inactive and only the magnetics are engaged. If you listen closely to the Hollow Years demo he bumps the magnetic selector switch when he first starts strumming which changes it to the bridge pickup for the second chord before he switches back to split coils for the third strummed chord.

  • incredibley informative, and really cool!

  • Awsome, I just purchased a mark v head, recto 4x12 cab, I am playing Mahoneys in Poughkeepsie NY, March 4th. Across from the Poughkeepsie train station, come and see it in action.

  • como se llama la cancion de la intro de este video??? as it is called the song of the intro of this video??

  • in hollow years you can clearly tell that one of his biggest influences was steve morse

  • @iBinDaLugge I thought it was more like alex lifeson stuff?

  • @timtimtim1888

in couple of interviews he said one of his biggest influences was steve morse.

can't tell for 100% cause I'm not petrucci though.

  • I thought his head was unmarked.

    hehehe

  • 6:50 I want that riff for the next DT's album !

  • @Buulz It may be for his next solo album, which he has stated he has done some writing for.

  • what cab is he using?

  • hah the shot at 3:44 w/ the logo and his playing is epic.

  • Very very compressed sound!!!

  • Notice how jumped foward in time at 9:47 !

  • TUBULAR!!

  • @wickedwizardofspeed hmmm, i sorta know what u mean. i played a jackson neck for like 3 years and it took a bit to get used to. after like 2 weeks though, i was in love with it and couldn't go back and sold the jackson. i always liked fender necks but felt it was a bit weird when trying to play dream theater stuff to it and then when i played the JP6 at guitar center i fell in love with it and knew i would get used to real quick. have u played one for a couple hours to see if u got use to it?

  • @aznguitar it's just when i play higher on the neck it gets harder for me to play it. but i bet if i played one for a couples of days i'd love it too.

  • Hi There...Does petrucci show the settings for II C+ as well? I see that he only showed mark 4 settings

  • waw if i had this guitar and this amp i will be a guitar heroes hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  • where is his pick??? I couldn't see it!!! =/

  • Parece silvester stallone ahi jajajajajaja!!! grosooo!

  • Great amp, BTW Can I get a tour around Mesa Boogie factory ?

  • What's this version of hollow years ? Seems not the same as the original song... any1 has tab ? :p

  • I can't decide which is more win: Petrucci's playing or his biceps.

  • @supermatti

    both..

  • whats the intro song?

  • @cuswco97 Animate-Inanimate from his solo album Suspended Animation..

  • I luv the lingo... Scoopy, flubbyness,

  • @SpaceDaveVest lol..

  • i need to pick one of these up!... dam wallet..

  • 06:50 sounds like Mastodon - Divinations =P

  • @powermetalking perhaps a riff for the new album? :P

  • perfect hollow years lesson

  • @MrKiller92 haha!yep! just finished learning the proper way of playing Hollow Years..thanks John!

  • @deathscythekim729 i know right! the same thing popped in my head. "ooooh correct way to play hollow years!! screw the tone video" lol

  • he has at least another 5 at home probably

  • hey

  • The riff sound ironmaidemish....

  • 09:47 now that's what I call a real petrucci sweep xD

  • Kneel before your GOD!

  • Even johns random noodling sounds amazing.

  • The chords are so clean, bright and clear as the crystal clear waters of the Maldives

  • That doubleneck in the first pic.

    I NEED TO OWN IT!!

  • <3 that riff @ 6:50 hope its gonna be in the new album! :)

  • @Kapoonnn He would never reveal a riff that would be on a future album. That would be silly

  • @Soundchaser88 I think it would be silly for him to say that it is, rather than the riff actually being part of a song of his.

  • wahey he plays that little lead motif from Rock Discipline @2:29

  • animate inanimate, from his solo record.

  • @sahmednadeem thats right! how can you guys don't know Petrucci's song.. pfff

  • could someone please explain the presence control to me?

  • @gamergeek3000 presence is the frequencies higher than treble

  • The music in the beginning could be a new DT song

  • @NeedHeadMusic It is a petrucci song from suspended animation

  • @NeedHeadMusic wrong, its from his solo album Suspended Animation :)

  • If I use my Mark V combo as a head will it sound like the Mark V head itself?

  • Cool.. my favourite amp and player!

I really hope you make this a series!
