  • WOW

  • She is so real. Always so emotionally connected to everything she sings. She feels every word, every note. So rare and beautiful

  • she would make an amazing Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd

  • now thats Singing with the Heart!!!!

  • now thats living within a song! jesus- shes good.

  • @theguythtsings. YES ! SIMPLY GENIOUS

  • This is the most beautiful performance I have ever seen. Bernadette Peters is the epitome of class.

  • tripo w.youtube.com/watch?v=lMxWHM1uLM0

  • lea salonga also sang this song quite good!!

  • Had to go and see what this lack-luster buzz of sutton foster was about and wow... shes purely about image then performance. Which is the mark of the typical "oh, I want to be pretty" actor.

  • @2ne1YGwinwin Ummmm, this is a video of Bernadette Peters. Why are be bashing Sutton Foster here?

  • THIS PERFORMANCE IS FROM 1998. NOT AFTER SHE LOST HER HUSBAND IN 2005. So if you are using the argument that she is emotional because she lost her husband, you are WRONG. Bernadette is just a brilliant performer. THAT IS ALL.

  • She was on the black version of Cinderella! :D

  • Bernadette had lost her husband Michael in a plane crash before this performance.

  • Sutton Foster is incredible, indeed. INCREDIBLY OVERRATED! Sutton Foster has a squeaky voice, mediocre dancing skills, and hammy acting. Plus she's ugly and anorexic. She's NOTHING compared to Ms. Peters!

  • @onlysutonfostersgood Have you actually seen Sutton Foster perform? She's okay, but she's NOT great at all! Check out her videos on Youtube and you'll see how lackluster and overrated she is -- and everyone says so.

  • Bernadette Peters sings her ass off once again This woman is unstoppable

  • goddess.

  • Perhaps she reflected on the loss of her husband in a helicopter crash in 2005.

  • @TimBarlow610PA No, because this was before that.

  • Watching this is so agonizingly beautiful. It's heartbreaking. Bernadette Peters is just pure brilliance.

  • Why she never was a Beth I shall never understand.

  • Bernadette was Rita on Animaniacs

  • Well I think we can all agree this is fucking incredible, can't we?

  • Her emotion in this song are so moving. I cry every time I watch this.

  • Her performance was so moving that I expecting to see tears running down her face as she sang. Excellent actress and singer.

  • This is like the 20h time I've watched this now. So amazing.

I don't see the 3:32 moment as hope, but as "putting on a brave face (again)," kind of "recomposing herself." Which is still amazingly subtle portrayal.

  • This gives me chills. No one will ever do this song as well as her.

  • This woman is timeless.

  • I keep coming back to this video also. I first saw it on PBS and I have never forgot it. No one does it like Bernadette Peters the emotion she puts into a song is almost bigger than life. I love you Bernadette! Not a day goes by!

  • As far as digging even Autumn rae can find the emotion..to feel the lyric and she is just barely 6 now...she is learning a song called "Even Now" and started crying after and said she was thinking of her dog and her auntie lori...who are both gone to the moon!!! Bernadette is breath taking:) Autumn Rae LOVES her!!!

  • there's barely any singer, especially today, that doesn't come even close to her beautiful singing

  • Most performers dream that someday they can deliver a performance as beautiful and pure as this one. Bernadette Peters seems to deliver more performances like this than many of us will be able to perform in one lifetime. Thank you for being such an amazing inspiration Ms. Bernadette Peters

  • sniffle*sniffle* sob sob* its amazing

  • such a beautiful interpretation :)

  • Every time she sings this song, my eyes become waterfalls.

  • Using someone from your own life is never recommend. We call that picking a wound. It will get you there once, and you'll bawl, but you'll never get back there again. The mind will protect itself from further damage. Bernadette is simply a good actress and probably doesn't even create given circumstances anymore because she can recall those emotions quite easily from years of practice.

  • Okay, as an actor, I have to say something about this whole "who is she crying about" business. You don't have to know someone who has died to dig into the character. In your analysis of the song you take the lyrics and the mood set by the music and develop a little story line to get you connected. You flesh out poignant details about the person your character has lost, you allow the story to be full of sensory images and rich circumstances, and your mind goes to that place for you.

  • @dumdiddly08 Her husband died in 2005...

  • @DancingQueen88 Right, but this performance was recorded in 1998. So, if she performed it again, maybe that would inform her performance. But for this particular performance she was drawing on something else.

  • Comment removed

  • @dumdiddly08 there is no way this is acting.

  • @ilovetacos92 You make a valid point. It probably isn't. Bernadette has based her career on being an overly emotional actor who "feels" everything and absolutely wears out her voice in her attempt to "feel" it. Acting or not, she is an actor who works constantly and I would say this type of performing has some merit, at least to somebody, if she keeps getting hired.

  • @dumdiddly08 I agree with what you said, but after watching every version Bernadette has done of this song, there was something different about this performance. More centered, more focused, more in the moment than any other. She sometimes has a tendency to push for emotion. I don't know what she used or how she got there, but this night it just happened. It's a great performance.

  • @figeroid She probably thinking about her husband. The one she lost to a helicopter crash.

  • @AliaSparrow Nope. As stated previously, he died seven years later.

  • Holy cow shes 60 something no but she looks 30!!!

  • @dumdiddly08 I think in this case she might be singing it for her husband. Who died.

  • @lomogo1 As we've mentioned throughout the comment thread, her husband died seven years after this performance. It would do all of you well to read up on what has been said before speaking out rashly.

  • @dumdiddly08 Rashly? What? How was that rash. Get over yourself :s

  • @lomogo1 You displayed a textbook lack of consideration or forethought with your comment. Others have mistakenly done the same, but yours has a syntax that knowingly implies a condescending tone. Even if he died, actors steer away from using personal life on stage, which is picking a wound: you will get that emotional response once but it will never be as potent again because the brain is a self-preserving organ that blocks pain. Learn something about acting before chastising me

  • @dumdiddly08 If you think social interactions are structurally based or ''textbook'' then you need to get out into the world and actually interact with other humans. Then you might know that the syntax i was using may not actually be interpreted as condescension but as a mere suggestion. But i guess a god-complexed, arrogant prick like you wouldn't understand that.

  • Comment removed

  • @dumdiddly08 Bernadette is sad because she lost her beautiful husband he died too young.. Thought you'd like know

  • This song gives me chills every time... Every single time.

  • What a talented, and incredibly strong woman. Wow...

  • Hey! It's Rita from Rita and Runt

  • holy mother of god....i have no words for how amazing she is

  • THAT IS ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE!

  • @RandomRandiRhythms what is?

  • @KeladrysLove That her husband died and that's where the emotion for this song comes from.

  • @RandomRandiRhythms Except it doesn't, as this was YEARS before he died.

  • @jamieleeke14 not according to some of the others on this form....?

  • @RandomRandiRhythms They are incorrect. This performance is from 1998 and her husband didn't die until 2005.

  • @jamieleeke14 How do you know when this is? It doesn't say...

  • @jamieleeke14 Okay! I just looked it up and found you to be correct! Sorry! :P Then where does all this emotion come from? I mean, yes, she's a terrific actress, but all actors bring tears from an experience, so.... Where are her tears coming from? I guess I'm asking this broadly, but I'm also asking you! :/

  • @RandomRandiRhythms Don't worry about it, haha and I'm not sure. She does seem very connected to the performance, on several levels. Maybe she's using the death of someone else as emotional context? Whatever she's doing, it brings out a flawless performance.

  • @jamieleeke14 Very true! :)

  • @jamieleeke14

Her husband died not too long before this performance, in a terrible accident.

  • @Treemeadow No he didn't, this performance was 7 years before he died.

  • She is thinking of her belated husband. It makes me cry every time.

  • @JaydeSabbath Does that mean that he died?!

  • @RandomRandiRhythms Yes. He died in a helicopter crash. As far as I know she's never even dated again.

  • @JaydeSabbath That's terrible! I have no words....

  • @JaydeSabbath No she's not, he was still alive at that point. This was recorded in 1998, he didn't die until 2005.

  • Okay, somthing else to add! I just saw he sing it in 1992 and she doesn't have emotion like now. Which shows she actually is thinking of someone, right?

  • Such an incredible interpretation of a heartbreaking loss. I cry each and every time to this because artist and lyric connect to the part of my heart that aches with the same emotion.

  • how amazing... she's an incredible performer... she's crying and.. keeping all her notes !

  • She's going to be performing at Indiana University in September! So excited!

  • No video on youtube have made me cry as much as this one does. It just gets to me. E V E R Y T I M E! It's exhausting, but I find myself come back here atleast once a month. She's just too good!

  • Watching this makes me shiver, but in the good way. She's one of my favorite people ever.

  • This is so enchanting, Cannot believe it. :]

  • Not a day goes by, that I don't die a little inside for the love I lost. After 8 years, I've given up on forgetting...just regrets now. Love you Noah,so much!! Kenny

  • Was this after her husband died? Maybe that's why she sings this song on such a personal level

  • @liebedich4ever No it wasn't, this was several years before that.

  • I hope this doesn't sound pathetic, but I cry with her! It's so.... moving, just seeing that kind of raw emotion, you know?

  • This song clearly overwhelms her with emotion. After every other performance during the concert, she's quickly out of character once the applause starts. Here, the Bernadette Peters smile is absent, only given half-heartedly a few moments after she finishes singing. I think she feels this song on a personal level more than any other song in the concert, and it shows on her face and in her actions.

  • Bernadette's truly incredible. The way she gets right back up and goes on with the show is remarkable. I would've sobbed for hours in front of an audience. :`( Brought me to tears.

  • i would just like to say one word AWESOME!!!! i would give my soul to meet Miss Peters xxx

  • I <3 Bernadette

  • just a great actress

  • her husband didnt die yet. Here she was only married for 2 years. She was married for 10. She gets into the song deeply but she could also be adding a special someone in there. She 's just so good we may never know but it wasnt her husband |:

  • @BernadettePetersx3 Yeah I thought it might be her husband at first but then I checked the date of this so that would be impossible. I feel like she'd have to be adding a special someone in there...I really don't think anyone could break down like that from just acting and not thinking about anyone in particular. I mean, at the very least she's just getting into that character who sings this song, and obviously the character is singing it about somebody so... I don't know.

  • Just wondering, why is she crying?

  • @tenesbet I wonder too. Either she's thinking of somebody in particular, or she just gets THAT in character. Or both.

  • @tenesbet Her husband died just a few days before this. I think that's the reason why she is crying...

  • I'm not particularly fond of Bernadette Peters, but she performs this very difficult song with tremendous grace and beauty.

  • These feelings are killing me... ...that's simply beyond discription!!!

  • It doesn't get any better than this.. brilliant in every way... Anne Rebold

  • @mompegviv Yes Anne, I was just thinking the same thing. I've watched thid vid MANY times. Never get's old. Perfection! A gorgeous Sondheim song sung Bernadette Peters. Heavenly!

  • It doesn't get better than this.. brilliance in every way.. bless you Bernadetter.. Anne Rebold

  • she woke up after a few seconds of getting herself together & realized her audience was right there with her and support and love her -3 & thats the best feeling in the world(:

i love that women & this song .... wow... if anyone else sings it i would die of laughter cause it would be a fail next to this 1-of-a-kind women :D

  • you can tell she was really serious about this song was the cry AND the fact that there were no jokes at the beginning or middle or end of this. (: i love her . she is your true beauty talented person.

  • WOW!!! Nuff said!

  • BERNADETTE IS BROADWAY.

    THAT'S IT.

  • She is on the odyssey haha

  • I love her.

  • @supasta3 She really cried. She gets very emotional when she sings.

  • This song is made even more beautiful by the emotion behind it =)

  • is crying just part of her act or did she really start crying?

  • @supasta3 shes really crying, her husband died shortly before this....

  • @DanceInTheDark711 Actually, her husband didn't pass until 2005, and this was filmed in the late 90's. You'll see it in her more recent performances of the number, but she's always been a profound and truthful actress. Here, she's connecting to this amazing song remarkably.

  • @boynamedalexxx this wasn't filmed in the 90s..... it was carnegie hall 2005.

  • @DanceInTheDark711 No, it's from her London Concert...it says so in the description. Bernadette's Carnegie Hall Concert "Sondheim, Etc." was also in the 90's, and was followed by her London Royal Festival Hall performance (this), which was pretty much a replica of her Carnegie concert.

  • so beautiful, it moved me to tears. what a talented woman. an excellent rendition of an incredible song ~

  • A beautiful song. The blessing that is music is truly personified through this woman.

  • hard to imagine anyone else singing this after Bernadette, eh?

  • Her husband died tragically in a plane crash in 2005.... it's just heart wrenching because you can so very clearly feel her pain....

she is so gifted and such an inspiration!!!

    -3

I am not a very emotional person but I literally cry every time I watch this!

  • She is amazing! Her rythmic intepretation of the song, her energy and tonality. She presents a complex mix of emotions that makes her one of the most amazing ARTISTS, not just vocalists. I LOVE YOU BURNADETTE.

  • hmmm, she is so lovely and sings so beautifully.

  • I could hear Rita the Cat from Animaniacs singing!

  • i can't watch this without crying. just astounding.

  • brought me to tears.

  • Brilliant ! Does not get better than this !

  • The lyrics stop me and wrench a memory tucked far away. Ms. Peter’s interpretation breaths life into something I thought was gone, and I don’t know if the tears are sad for what has been lost or happy for what has just been found again.

  • what a wonderful performance!!!

  • Amazing Bern!!! If we revisit all of her versions...she's struggled with almost all of them...there's something there for her...and not until this past week did I realize there was something for me in this song also...amazing!

  • Comment removed

  • Had to take a deep breath there. Very emotional. Wonderful woman.

  • Brings me to tears every damn time. Timeless.

  • She makes me proud to be a thespian.

  • i think of my dead mother when i hear this. its been 2 years now. it is a "day after day after day" feeling.

  • I keep coming back to this video. No one sings Soundheim like Bernadette Peters. This performance is so moving- and yes clearly she is thinking of someone,

  • @lsblatt1 i bet she was thinking about her husband :(

  • @lsblatt1 no okay my guess was wrong .-.

  • she. makes. me. weep. And sob and sob uncontrollably. I think she's incredible

  • I think I have something in my eye...

  • Very emotionally packed performance. Not wonderful to experience unrequited love.

    A curse.

  • I had a feeling about this song. That's why I chose to view it first amongst all the other Bernadette songs on here. Of course I love her anyway, so it's just a bonus that she moved me so by witnessing and feeling her emotion as the piece is performed.

  • when she started crying i started crying... anyone who can't appreciate her emotion, not to mention her amazing natural and true talent obviously has no taste and simply listens to the overtly synthesized voices of "stars" today. I will always love you bernadette :)

  • She just sang this song again recently in a Sondheim celebration. I don't know how she can bear getting through it anymore! I send all of my love out into the universe to envelop her in a huge hug!

  • This video absolutely kills me every single time I watch it.

Bernadette, you are a remarkable woman of remarkable talent. I met her last May, and she couldn't have been sweeter and more down to earth. This woman is a treasure.

  • WOW! I love her so much! Born in the same year. This song makes me sob as I think of my wife I lost in 2004. Ran into her in a Hollywood health food market in the 1980's. We made eye contact and smiled at each other. I wish I would have said something but, alas. She is without a doubt the greatest Sondheim star. Just saw the 80th BD celeb. on PBS and she was sensational as was the entire show. What a great body she has. When I saw her I must admit she is really tiny and 2cute! Luv U Bernie.

  • Sweet Jesus. This woman is a combination of the most amazing actress on the planet and the most genuinely... genuine person to ever grace a Broadway stage... Brava.

  • BERNADETTE IS SYMPLY MARVELOUS.!

    BIG HUG FROM GUATEMALA

  • this is the best acting i've seen in my life out of any broadway performer. ever.

  • Stephen's melodies were never really very good. I don't think he ever really realized that. His lyrics were fantastic. He's thought of to be in a little higher class than he really should be, because there hasn't been any strong musical theatre composers in he last 40 years.

  • wow this kid can sort of sing

  • This performance by Ms. Peters is brilliant! Perfection. Musical theater at it's best!

  • She always makes me cry when i see her go throught that moment, then pull herself up, and keep going. She's incredible.

  • all her tragic life events almost overook her song - but she is a pro and grabbed on and rode that bastard to the end - Bravo

  • such a beautiful, emotional performance. absolutely moved me to tears.

  • phenomenal.

  • Oh my goodness! I complete forgot about her singing, and I love the song too, its just so perfect. She looks amazing, I love how she sings it with such emotion unlike other singers, I know she acts too obviously, but still. I love this

  • i am just sitting here in sheer amazement the video had ended and i just can't move.. that was one of the most amazing things i have ever seen, she is a true performer, wow what a queen!!

  • WOW. She went through Hell and back in that performance. Phenomenal.

  • oh what a brilliant discovery! I didn't even know she could sing, I thoughjt it was Karen's sister from W&G, and that was it. How wonderful :)

  • Moving indeed. I saw her sing this in person in the 1990s, and heard her sing the song many times on recording, but not like this! Wowza. This was not easy for her. What a testament to her great artistry! Brava!

  • ah, Seungmin...

  • Amazing song, but Carly Simon did it better...there's a little joke in there too...

  • @slumpytube "Did" is the operative word here, because Carly has effectively dropped off the face of the earth. What a pity that she no longer performs live. But it is her life, and perhaps age has taken her voice from her, or she just wanted to retire.

Bernadette, who I believe is about the same age as Carly, seems to still be going as strong as ever. As evidenced by this video.

  • @trwent Carly has just released another album, but her live appearances seem to be very far and few between unfortunately. I heartily recommend the album Mask to anyone, it is stunning and guaranteed to bring tears to anyone's eyes...should be on youtube!

  • i saw Bernadette in A Little Night Music, she was amazing

  • Remember...she experienced the tragic loss of her husband. I am sure the lyrics are very relevant to her.

  • @gziegler82

yeah, but her husband was alive, when she did it. He died 2 years later ;)

When I heard it first time I thought, she meant him, but later I read he died later.

  • Remember...she experienced the tragic loss of her husband. I am sure the lyrics are very relevant to her

  • amazing just god damn amazing

  • Her second "so there's hell to pay" is one of the greatest moments I've experienced in musical theater. It's extraordinary. Listen and watch. Thanks so much for posting. This is so special, I'm so moved.

  • GOD SHE LOOK SO YOUNG !

  • incredible...
