The Oilers finished 15 points ahead of the Islanders. If the NHL wanted to fuck the Islanders out of the Cup, then why did the Islanders get to open the series at home?
Before this game, Oilers fans still had the fear that all the offensive firepower may still end up getting stopped cold by Billy Smith. Mark Messier's goal, and the subsequent eruption, was just what the Oilers needed for the confidence to finally beat the Islanders.
The league "fucked" the Islanders out of the cup? They lost Games 3, 4 and 5 by a combined score of 19-6. And it's been over for the Islanders ever since. Cry more.
The league fucked the Islanders out of what would have been there 5th straight Stanley Cup with that bullshit 2-2-1-1-1 format.
There was no reason to "all of the sudden," change the format when it was the finals. The league gave a laughable reason "cost." Who the f cares about cost at this point, it was the biggest lie and they have never wanted to talk about it since.
The league did what it had to do to protect the Les Canadiens record.
@mrceebees14 In the 1983-4 Regular Season, Edmonton finished FIRST overall with 119 points, and the Islanders SECOND with 104. So in the "old format," the Oilers would have played the first 2 at home, plus games 5 & 7 if necessary. In the 1983-4 format, over 7 games, the Islanders would actually have home advantage (games 1-2, 6-7), even though they finished with 15 LESS points. A person could actually be excused for thinking the League was FAVOURING the Islanders with this set-up!
How did they fuck the Islanders? If they really wanted to fuck the Isles they wouldn't have awarded home-ice advantage to them based on the Wales Conference overall higher winning percentage. Home-ice, under the old arrangement & everyone since, has been awarded to the team with the most points:that was Edmonton (118 to 103 for the Isles. It had nothing to do with cost. If the Isles had won in 7 with them having an extra home game they didn't deserve would you be complaining?
The NHL would've had to know in advance that the Isles would drop at least one at home since they knew they would lose three straight in Alberta. That's a risky bet since the Isles won twice in Edmonton in 83. Playing 3 straight in Edmonton shouldn't have occurred because Edmonton should've played games 1,2,5 & 7 at home. But the drawback of having to play three straight in Alberta was offset by the Isles' home-ice advantage. If you can't win 1 on the road you don't deserve to win.
