@PenelopeBaker I don't know who he is? I guess he is the actor=Leonidas? Well if he lived, the story and it's outcomes wouldn't be the same. With their death inspired generations to fight for something higher than their selves. So it isn't so bad, giving hope to all of us.

@kingcoong not really. it was great but when leonidos threw his spear, the othor spartans in the background were dying. but when they blocked the arrows at the end they were all alive without a scratch...(respond to this someone plzzz)
the spartans won at the end, u missing the point of the whole movie, its about how 300 could inspire the whole of all greek nations to unite against the "almighty " persion empire
@DarkAdonisVyers Not so much that, but the Spartans' stand did delay the Persian advance long enough for Athens to be evacuated and a defense line set up across the narrow Peloponnesian isthmus. The Greeks held on, and Xerxes (who was not the freak depicted in the movie) had to return to Persia to deal with other business. A year later, the Greeks defeated one of Xerxes' generals and drove the Persians out. About 145 years later, the Greeks invaded and conquered Persia.
Yes but...then people would have skirts. Yup, the Marathon greeks wore skirts, and no spartans were there. They had a religious festival and MISSED the entire battle. Goddamn Religion ruins everything.

@DeathFromVids23 you're right about the general plotline; however, they clearly took a few liberties in the making of this movie. and I think his name was in fact Leonidas.
@DeathFromVids23 They mean the details aren't exactly to the true thing, but who cares? This movie isn't based off of Thermopylae, it's based off a comic book.

First off what amuses me is how some of you think this move had accuracies, the only accurate thing is that a battle took place. Second Xerxes never proclaimed himself a God, as it is completely against Zoroastrian beliefs. Second you for get the Hoplites, Ionians and Greeks who also fought in this battle, it was not just Spartans.
really? Long you say? Changed the world you say? Compared to who? Let us check hmmm they copied Egyptian and Myconian art. What is more amusing is your ignorance of other cultures and how much more they contributed to Humanity over the Greeks! So back it up rather than get personal!
@InsaneFriends04 p.s. nearly everything that Greece had came from the Near East, Levant, Mesopotamia etc so please read your history. I bet you are a Greek who thinks they invented everything like some how Arabs believe they invent everything lol
Regardless of how Hollywood portrayed it, in real history, they lost. And in real history, when Xerxes went to go take the rest of Greece, Greece mobilized and defeated him.
Keep in mind, though, that even if there hadn't been that betrayal, realistically, it was still only 300 spartans plus 1000 other Greeks versus, like, a few million Persians. Their stamina could not hold out forever.
Each day, Xerxes couldn't mover through the pass, was a victory for Leonidas. The problem with calling yourself a god is when those who follow see you as human, they fall off. Xerxes was ready to go back Persia until the goat path was found, if he didn't he was facing a mutiny from his foreign troops.
There wasn't a million men there, most modern historian place the number closer to a hundred thousand. Herrodotus had a tendency to exaggerate his numbers to make the Greeks appear more noble.
@ThePrimith well it's true that they didn't actually had chances of winnig, but hey!there were not only other 1000 greek tribes! In total there were like 6000-7000 soldiers including the spartans I saw this in the history channel documentary and on wikipedia. Some of them could go for suplies and reinforcements;(the first thing) then Leonidas knew about the goar passage, but the men he sent to defend the goat deserted(like 1000 greeks) and Maybe Xerxes would have given up!
i like this ending theatrically but historically i like that the other ending stays somewhat accurate about leonidas dying in an arrow strike. the only difference was that he died on the first day of the battle, got beheaded and his head was put on a spear to raise persian morale. other than that a great movie
@futuremarine321- surprisingly it was accurate compared to most hollywood movies, but yes it is still unnaccurate. they didnt just break out and kill anyone they saw. they did organized fighting, the phalanx. the numbers were mostly wrong too.
@DakotaLynnMartin sorry how was it accurate? You just contradicted yourself with saying it is accurate and it is not accurate. What was accurate? The Persians won, we know the Greeks exaggerated the battle and number of Persians, we also know that the Persians took Athens and burnt it to the ground and it is that act that united Greece not this battle portrayed in this movie
do you have a problem with being an asshole? or is this the only thing you have to do with your life? i suggest you get a girlfriend instead of starting stupid shit with peopel on youtube that frankly isnt that important. but apparently you are a damn expert on the greeks....get a life you stupid faggot
@futuremarine321 I do have a g/f, and if it concerns you so much why did you reply? And I do know a fair bit about Greeks, OBVIOUSLY you do not. O so you know many Greeks share the same ideals as I do, and no American Greeks are not counted. So keep it up, get personal and learn to know something about history first before commenting on it. Why are Americans so ignorant?
@futuremarine321 WHAT!!!!!! he couldn't die on the first day :(( the history channel said that Leonidas was killed by some arrows, and then a few remaining spartans just charged to take the body and stroke back like 4 times until they could get his body after that the documentary says they retreated with him into a passage, and were ALL killed by the last barrage of arrows of the persian archers
Now, zerksies, his nation (not alone) did have slaves. However, it was a completely different culture with completely different beliefs, and different outlooks. At least the movie in some ways depicts this differential.
Another amazing fact not told (among others) in this movie is that Leonidas, one man, his methods for this battle including the Naval commander (that won this war), is studied to this very day by military schools, the Spartans formation, so few to look so imposing (not mentioned in this movie). How to pick more importantly why you should pick certain regions and places to stage war. The Greeks - Spartans --- Cretans, never owned people. They just learned to govern.
I'm kind of confused at some things you said about slaves. Spartans did have slaves. When the Dorians came as barbarians to take over the region, they used the people there as slaves. Later to be known as Sparta. The slaves they used were the Helots. This gave them the ability to create such a great army, cause thats all they had to worry about. The persians had slaves too, and the Greeks, and Romans and pretty much everyone at that time. It was a normal thing.
no there were no slaves in Europe, there were servents. like i said there is an extreme deifference between a slave and a servent. But its cutting deep into to it and not trully in hte mood to cut threw it.
Atheist--before we argue the origin and birth of government. Just think about it before you get obsesssed with proving someone wrong. If you still challenge it, fine. The only ending will be in several text not on you tube. The start, here, crete, minioan, and then the golden erra. All stages the formation of government specifically Democracy.
Slave, no not a slave or slaves. If you want to speak of slaves. Slaves were the tribes of Africa, chiefs sold their members of tribes to the "new americas". Willingly sold them, took their own members to auction and sold them to the biggest buyer. This action is called slavery, the African chiefs had their own tribes as slaves and sold them at will to whoever had the biggest exchange. Here, this is not slavery. This is the start of government.
Be careful with the word "slave". It does have a meaning, a strong one. From then until today, science and tech has come alive. The tracking and managing of empoyee by empoyer is something that makes what they do seem like nothing. You cant move without someone or specific jobs knowing about it. Slave, then? wouldn't go that far with it.
well the giants and the rhinos didn't happen either. The basic story itself is true except for parts of it. The major one was when teh kings spoke face to face, never happened.
wouldnt go that far, read up on it may be shocked may not. but wortha read. Never had TRUE slaves, do you think for example Alexander the Great had slaves?
Alexander wasn't Spartan, he was a Macedonian that was brought up on the teachings of Cyrus. As for not having true slaves, these people were the lower caste of society that were conquered by Sparta, forced into manual labor, had very limited rights, and were murdered constantly by their Spartan lords. They may not have been "true" slaves, but slaves they were. Just like Serfs in Feudal society, just with less rights.
Regardless of Spartan, mecedonian they both are conquerors. However, Alexander did not "slave" he brought education, infastructure, cities, libraries, schools, in fact spynx face is constructed to that of Alexander. The Spartans, well they did not have slaves. It was a / the start of what you see today and probably are involved in leaving out the killings. You wake, you leave, you work for someone else that can fire you at any time (depending on your job and type of job). This can ruin you life.
Also, I don't think the Spartans were conquerors as you said in another post. Unless I misread it. They pretty much wanted to keep to themselves, as the history books have shown. They only ever really fought Athens, but that was their problem :P
Yeah ur right about them never trying to use their army excessively. Though after they won the Pelopenesian wars they started throwing their weight around, like in Egypt, and they ended up being provoked into a fight with Thebes and Epaminondas which just finished them as a major power when they lost as Leuktra.
So, in essance, you and I both are not tiliing fields, yet we do work daily to survive. We work for (in the end) the government, on top of that pay tax, tax, and more tax. If you ask me, maybe a bit more freedom existed for the "slaves" back then compared to us today. The slaves as you say are today called blue collar workers. We to face a death penalty if we do something horrid. As for them, well, who trully knows what happened
great hollywood, but i hope we all know that they never seen eachother on the battle field. This never did happen. Absolutely great hollywood though, its a moment.
The movie is good don't think I am stating different. The Greek Spartan King and the Persian King. They never set eyes on eacother not once. That is hollywood, the rest is well kind of on point.
The problem with this ending is that it removes the sacrifice motif. Characters who were powerful become moral cowards, in the trade off of this 'physically powerful' moment where they manage to survive something considered impossible.
The real history is they probably died in a less epic fashion, yet...
The scene which the last of the 300 dies is written intending a much more powerful sense of loyalty, emotion and resolve, trading their lives to die on their terms as free men, not slaves.
the history channel had a spec where they showed the history of the 300
they say that when leonidas was killed both sides fought for the head of the great king xerxes wanted it as a trophy but the spartans wanted to keep it and give it a kings burial

In total there were like 6000-7000 soldiers including the spartans I saw this in the history channel documentary and on wikipedia. Some of them could go for suplies and reinforcements;(the first thing) then Leonidas knew about the goar passage, but the men he sent to defend the goat deserted(like 1000 greeks) and Maybe Xerxes would have given up!

i think you did pretty good on this ending and honestly this is the one ive wanted to see its sad they all died
bearmaceace 2 years ago 3
yeah but if they had won the battle you wouldnßt remember them as you do.
i mean there are not many men who went into battle with the insurrence that they´re about to die.
maybe william wallace...

to true man its still sad though
bearmaceace 2 years ago
it is sad, but perhaps the most valuable lesson that could be given.
modernnapoleon 2 years ago
i like this ending theatrically but historically i like that the other ending stays somewhat accurate about leonidas dying in an arrow strike. the only difference was that he died on the first day of the battle, got beheaded and his head was put on a spear to raise persian morale. other than that a great movie
futuremarine321 2 years ago
where did you get your information?
DakotaLynnMartin 2 years ago
@DakotaLynnMartin- history channel had a documentary. why? was some of it wrong?
futuremarine321 2 years ago
@futuremarine321- surprisingly it was accurate compared to most hollywood movies, but yes it is still unnaccurate. they didnt just break out and kill anyone they saw. they did organized fighting, the phalanx. the numbers were mostly wrong too.
DakotaLynnMartin 2 years ago
yeah, i know the persians had closer to 100K right?
futuremarine321 2 years ago
@DakotaLynnMartin sorry how was it accurate? You just contradicted yourself with saying it is accurate and it is not accurate. What was accurate? The Persians won, we know the Greeks exaggerated the battle and number of Persians, we also know that the Persians took Athens and burnt it to the ground and it is that act that united Greece not this battle portrayed in this movie

@futuremarine321 I would suggest you read a few books
devoneh 2 years ago
do you have a problem with being an asshole? or is this the only thing you have to do with your life? i suggest you get a girlfriend instead of starting stupid shit with peopel on youtube that frankly isnt that important. but apparently you are a damn expert on the greeks....get a life you stupid faggot
futuremarine321 1 year ago
@futuremarine321 I do have a g/f, and if it concerns you so much why did you reply? And I do know a fair bit about Greeks, OBVIOUSLY you do not. O so you know many Greeks share the same ideals as I do, and no American Greeks are not counted. So keep it up, get personal and learn to know something about history first before commenting on it. Why are Americans so ignorant?
devoneh 1 year ago
@futuremarine321 WHAT!!!!!! he couldn't die on the first day :(( the history channel said that Leonidas was killed by some arrows, and then a few remaining spartans just charged to take the body and stroke back like 4 times until they could get his body after that the documentary says they retreated with him into a passage, and were ALL killed by the last barrage of arrows of the persian archers
Trunks858585 2 years ago
I think a good addition to this would have been the final charge at the end of the movie coming in right after Leonidas throws the spear.

damn that ending is better then the one thats always on cable why didnt they use that!!!! awesome

They just learned to govern.
priestof1 2 years ago
I'm kind of confused at some things you said about slaves. Spartans did have slaves. When the Dorians came as barbarians to take over the region, they used the people there as slaves. Later to be known as Sparta. The slaves they used were the Helots. This gave them the ability to create such a great army, cause thats all they had to worry about. The persians had slaves too, and the Greeks, and Romans and pretty much everyone at that time. It was a normal thing.
hafaball 2 years ago
no there were no slaves in Europe, there were servents. like i said there is an extreme deifference between a slave and a servent. But its cutting deep into to it and not trully in hte mood to cut threw it.
priestof1 2 years ago
Atheist--before we argue the origin and birth of government. Just think about it before you get obsesssed with proving someone wrong. If you still challenge it, fine. The only ending will be in several text not on you tube. The start, here, crete, minioan, and then the golden erra. All stages the formation of government specifically Democracy.
priestof1 2 years ago
Slave, no not a slave or slaves. If you want to speak of slaves. Slaves were the tribes of Africa, chiefs sold their members of tribes to the "new americas". Willingly sold them, took their own members to auction and sold them to the biggest buyer. This action is called slavery, the African chiefs had their own tribes as slaves and sold them at will to whoever had the biggest exchange. Here, this is not slavery. This is the start of government.
priestof1 2 years ago
Be careful with the word "slave". It does have a meaning, a strong one. From then until today, science and tech has come alive. The tracking and managing of empoyee by empoyer is something that makes what they do seem like nothing. You cant move without someone or specific jobs knowing about it. Slave, then? wouldn't go that far with it.

well the giants and the rhinos didn't happen either. The basic story itself is true except for parts of it. The major one was when teh kings spoke face to face, never happened.
priestof1 2 years ago
Also a few things they left out, for example the one hundred thousand slaves that the "free" nation of Sparta owned.
Atheistcat2004 2 years ago
wouldnt go that far, read up on it may be shocked may not. but wortha read. Never had TRUE slaves, do you think for example Alexander the Great had slaves?
priestof1 2 years ago
Alexander wasn't Spartan, he was a Macedonian that was brought up on the teachings of Cyrus. As for not having true slaves, these people were the lower caste of society that were conquered by Sparta, forced into manual labor, had very limited rights, and were murdered constantly by their Spartan lords. They may not have been "true" slaves, but slaves they were. Just like Serfs in Feudal society, just with less rights.
Atheistcat2004 2 years ago
Regardless of Spartan, mecedonian they both are conquerors. However, Alexander did not "slave" he brought education, infastructure, cities, libraries, schools, in fact spynx face is constructed to that of Alexander. The Spartans, well they did not have slaves. It was a / the start of what you see today and probably are involved in leaving out the killings. You wake, you leave, you work for someone else that can fire you at any time (depending on your job and type of job). This can ruin you life.
priestof1 2 years ago
Also, I don't think the Spartans were conquerors as you said in another post. Unless I misread it. They pretty much wanted to keep to themselves, as the history books have shown. They only ever really fought Athens, but that was their problem :P
hafaball 2 years ago
who knows what i said, if I did say it yea your right they did stay to themselves for the most part.
priestof1 2 years ago
Yeah ur right about them never trying to use their army excessively. Though after they won the Pelopenesian wars they started throwing their weight around, like in Egypt, and they ended up being provoked into a fight with Thebes and Epaminondas which just finished them as a major power when they lost as Leuktra.
Histories great isn't it? lol

Emhilradim 2 years ago
the history channel had a spec where they showed the history of the 300
they say that when leonidas was killed both sides fought for the head of the great king xerxes wanted it as a trophy but the spartans wanted to keep it and give it a kings burial
