  • Is it meant to be going at that much of an angle?

  • yes, its much easier to accelerate at an angle than going to straight up. Especially once you get past the thick lower atmosphere.

  • Gotta remember that the goal of all these vehicles -- including shuttle and even the Apollo moon rockets -- is to deliver their payloads into Low Earth Orbit (LEO). That requires you to quickly get above the atmosphere into the vacuum of space (a relatively simple task) AND achieve in eight minutes or so of powered flight a HORIZONTAL velocity of 17,500 mph -- which is MACH 27 or 5 MILES PER SECOND. So most of the time and energy are spent building up SPEED OVER THE GROUND.
