@meggiemingming Hot glue and plastic mesh (for cross stitching). I don't recommend it though. Instead I would recommend using a thin nylon rope and stringing it through the foam noodle pieces.
1. would it be possible to cut the noodle like you did but to string a rope through the holes to keep it together? 2. thank you for this video! I've been peicing together different "how to" vids and am almost ready to start my first fursuit!
@Texshy I don't exactly understand your question. Nothing about fursuit construction is easy or cheap. It takes a lot of patience, practice, and (unfortunately) money.
I'd say learning how to sew tails is probably the best way to start. They range from simple to complex in design and require the least amount of fur. Tails are good for getting yourself introduced to the medium and construction techniques.
I've seen people use anything from fur to fleece to reptile-patterned faux stuff. Fur is probably the easiest to start off with. Buy GOOD fur, not that scraggly cheap stuff. Honestly, it's not even worth practicing with. Get a yard of nice short-pile fur. If you want that ribbed look often seen on dragon tummies, use "pelted mink" fur. Don't worry, it's fake fur. Pelted mink is just the style name. It's soft short pile fur with grooves shaved into it.
@Gungeophrenia In this video, I hot glued the "vertebrae" to plastic mesh strips, leaving an inch gap between each vertebrae. However, that method did not last long and had some issues. Try, instead, linking them with a nylon rope down the center hole in the vertebrae. Make sure the nylon rope is thinner than the hole, so they can move relatively freely like a snake. If you need to, add a small weight to the end of the rope to give it some "swish".
Okay! I have a tail similar enough to this and the base is a 28' wooden snake, I need to know hoe to layer the fur over it so that it still swings right and so that you can't see where I cut the fur. Can you help me? o.o
Not so much the swishy-ness that I was going for, but I know what I did wrong. I'll post another tutorial using this same method another time, as well as a video of this tail finished.
If/when I redo this tail again, I'd insert a nylon rope into the center hole (pool noodles are hollow) instead of just using plastic mesh on the outside.
there should be a whole in the middle of those tubes right, well if you run a light yello rope through that hole. and tie it to number 18. so it will be as flexable as a peice of string
No, no chains in this one. The typical "swishy tail" design is called a "chain spine", where you take pvc piping and cut it similar to how I did this tail, then slide a padded chain down the center of the pipe pieces and fur over it. The weight of the chain makes it more swishy, but the tail will also be hard, heavy, and noisy if you don't pad it right.
Yup, I have dA and FA accounts. Same screen name as this one.
If you want it to bent back tapper the other end and attach in the midle

Im wondering whether or not this would work for something for example a husky tail? As the same skeleton and whatnot but shorter
Doctor5pencer 9 months ago
@Doctor5pencer you wont need to use this technique at all. just cut the fur to the shape you want and stuff it with hobby fill pretty tightly.

Quick question what did you use to hold the pieces together?

@ginnonifu Yes, in fact, I recommend doing that instead of how I did it with the plastic mesh.

@blackcat2086 ok thanls, just one more thing, what material would I use if I was to make a suit as a dragon?

a way to improve on this idea is:
there should be a whole in the middle of those tubes right, well if you run a light yello rope through that hole. and tie it to number 18. so it will be as flexable as a peice of string
ghost010X3 3 years ago
Perfect! It'd be much lighter, softer, and quieter than and chain-spine tail. =3
blackcat2086 3 years ago
your using a chain.... that must be heavy. ... off topic you have a deviant art ?
