Good job. It looks really good, but it doesn't quite look like James Hetfield. It doesn't really look like him at all. Just an old dude. Still nice shading.
I tried this one. I learned several things. I used too much paint. I mainly painted with the dirty mineral spirits. Bristle brushes are really hard and take getting used to. Having pretty much no knowledge of painting I made a huge mess trying to clean up. I didn't completely finish the portrait. Disposable vinyl gloves have been added to my supply list. :)
if i could make a suggestion, i understand you're still getting the hang of this tech. and everyone has their own style but i think your dry brush works could look much more photorealistic if you eased up on whatever fluid youre using. In Igor's works you'll notice how he starts off with very light layers it almost looks like hes using charcoal powder--very smooth, i can easily see brush strokes all over your portraits (not saying thats an awful thing, just takes away from that photorealism look
I know that you usually do actual people but could you possibly consider ganondorf from legend of zelda twighlight princess? if you could just ponder that i'd be happy
Wow! Merrill, you out did yourself by lightyears. I use pencils mainly, but I'm very intested in this method now. The values seem more intense. Great, great, great job man.
@Lissdexia you are welcome. I use a bit more thinner than Igor. Its not classic dry brush, but its what makes sense to me......As im sure you know, every artist twists the rules a bit to fit the nuances of his/her own hand.
I really find these videos educational even if you don't follow along with the tutorial. And that's awesome that you did a dry brush tutorial because I think that other guy doesn't speak English or something so you couldn't exactly find out how he did it. But that might just be another portrait artist on youtube that's Russian or something.
@MisforMikeL The best way to practice from these videos it is not "literal practice". These videos model breaking down images in to shapes and the use of various media to provide tone (and sometimes color). I have noticed from students that I have taught that the most successful ones change the rules to fit their own logic.
@janetrtist I think that any artist has to find ways to make the image "work"....For instance, at the end, I used color pencils to do the detail work. I did this to cover up a few MISTAKES! :) SHHHHH!!!!!! :)
Hey dude. Still watching your videos. Great tutorial. Love the highlights. The hair, eyes, and left side of the face draws me into the picture. Never tried dry brush before, going to definitely give it a go. I like how it chalks up like charcoal. Which is my favourite medium to use thus far. Still need to get prismacolour pencils.
What type of paint thinner can you suggest that smells the least and does a good job? Asking about basically the same thing but with oil paints, too.
@fabfauna I am not sure about the "fume" factor! I don't even smell it anymore LOL! There is an alternate citrus thinner, but I dont like it as much as mineral spirits......or you could try my illustration process (watch my apple video) to eliminate paint all together.
amazing simply amazing.. you've given me so many pointers and tips that have helped improve my own drawings! thank you, and plez keep making awesome video's and creations like these!
@rina2410000 Wow! Thank you. I truly appreciate your comment and I am happy that you have learned a lot. I have barely scratched the surface of what I want to teach on my channel. Many more videos on the way! :)
MERRIL....... DUDE........ This is SICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG James looks amazing. Dude you are so talented and... I'm speechless, i think my heart skipped a beat when i saw it on my subscriptions box. OMG thanks for this tutorial, this is a masterpiece !!!!!!!
@CarpDiemBaby The idea came from you. I dont think I have ever seen a request voted up so much in such a short time. Im glad that you liked it! Its a fun process! I hope that you give it a try!
First of All, Thank you for putting alot of time and effort in your videos, For all the information you give us in every video. Too help us improve on ur drawing skills, And I think it awesome that you want to help us viewers to achieve that. Unlike my Art teachers, who could care less if we improve. Thank you Merill for inspiring us YouTubers. :)
@Vay72 WOW! I am humbled and honored by your comment. One of the things that keeps driving me is the fact that the arts has been cut back so much in schools. I myself, lost my job three times in four years. I have barely scratched the surface of what I want to teach. THANK YOU for this wonderful and inspiring comment!

Dry brush is by far the hardest method for portraits in my opinion. I usually just use charcoal or pencil, and just avoid dry brush >.<
